new Lesson
Activity 1: “Let’s Go To The Market”
Instruction: Teacher will show a fruit stand on the screen with prices.
Learners need to know the total amount to be paid based on the list
provided by the teacher.
Objects to use:
Paper, ballpen
Items to be shown on the screen:
Mango: 20 each
Pineapple: 25 each
Apple: 15 each
Watermelon: 30 each
Items to buy:
3 mangoes, 2 pineapples, 4 apples, and 1 watermelon
Activity 2: What Have You Got?
Based on the answers on activity 1, learners need to answer the
following guide questions on their answer sheets.
C. Establishing a Guide Questions:
purpose for the 1. What is the total cost of the fruits that you bought?
lesson 2. How were you able to get the total cost?
3. What mathematical concept(s) did you use to get the total cost?
4. Can you site any situation where evaluating algebraic expression is
used in your daily life?
D. Discussing the The teacher will now discuss the concept of evaluating algebraic
new concepts expressions.
Algebra is the branch of mathematics that deals with variables. And a
variable is a symbol that represents an unknown quantity. It is usually
represented by letters.
Example:
n+3
Where n is the variable.
n+3 together is an algebraic expression. It’s algebraic, or from algebra,
because this expression n+3 contains a variable; And it’s an expression
because it contains a number or numbers and at least one operation.
But remember our goal is solving algebraic expressions. So, in order to
do that, we’re going to need a little bit more information. Here is our extra
information.
Evaluate n+3 if n = 5.
Solution:
n+3¿ 5+3¿ 8
Let’s take a look at this example.
Solve for the expression below if c = 7 and a = 5.
8+ a−c¿ 8+5−7¿ 13−7¿ 6
Evaluate 7w if w = 4.
7 w¿ 7 x 4¿ 28
Evaluate y2 – 4 + 3 if y = 6.
y 2−4+3¿ 62 −4+ 3¿ 36−4 +3¿ 32+3¿ 35
Steps in evaluating algebraic expressions:
1. Substitute the given values.
2. Follow the order of operations, that is, the PEMDAS which stands for
Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, Addition and
Subtraction.
To further enhance the learners’ knowledge, the teacher will ask the
learners to arrange the step in evaluating algebraic expressions based
on the given values and solve for the answer.
1. Evaluate 2y + 3 when y = 3
A. Adding 6 and 3
B. Substituting y by 3
C. Multiplying 2 and 3
Answer: ____________
Value of the expression: ______________
2. Evaluate 3(a + 4) + (a – 2) when a = 6
E. Developing A. Computing 6 + 4 and 6 – 2
B. Substituting a by 6
Mastery
C. Adding 30 and 4
D. Multiplying 3 and 10
Answer: ____________
Value of the expression: ______________
3. Evaluate 2(x + 4) + 3(y – 3) when x = - 3 and y = 5
A. Computing 2(1) and 3(2)
B. Computing -3 + 4 and 5 – 3
C. Computing 2 + 6
D. Substituting x by 4 and y by 5
Answer: ____________
Value of the expression: ______________
F. Making The teacher will ask the class to fill in the blanks. They will answer it in a
Generalizations piece of paper.
I have learned today that 1. _____________ is the branch of
mathematics that deals with variables. And a 2. _____________ is a
