4. CALCULATION
4.1 Vessel Volume Calculation
The receiver volume, or buffer volume, is the tank volume needed to deliver the
required flow rate with a supply pressure Pmax, without compressor contribution,
during a buffer time (τbuffer). Calculation are started ny determine operational
pressure difference and receiver volume are calculated
∆𝑃𝑜𝑝 = 𝑃𝑚𝑎𝑥 − 𝑃𝑚𝑖𝑛
𝑃𝑁 𝑇
𝑉𝑣 = τ𝑏𝑢𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟 𝐹
𝑇𝑁 ∆𝑃𝑜𝑝
Where TN and PN is respectively air temperature and pressure at normal condition.
Measured at 273.15 K and 1.013 bar.
Normal temperature TN = 273.15 K
Normal pressure PN = 1.013 bar
Operational pressure difference ∆P_op = 3.0 bar
Volume of vessel Vv = 5.5 m3
4.2 Vessel Dimension Calculation
To design receiver vessel properly, it is good to add vessel capacity as safety
margin. Typically this safety margin is 10 to 15% of vessel volume.
Operating volume of vessel Vv = 5.5 m3
Safety margin factor c = 10 %
Design volume of vessel V = 6.1 m3
And now we begin to calculating volume of shell, bottom, and top section of the
vessel. Standard elliptical head are selected as top and bottom of vessel.
4.2.1 Top section volume calculation
Elliptical head are chosen as top section of the vessel. Volume of elliptical head
are calculated by following formula :
2
π𝐼𝐷 𝐼𝐷
𝑉𝑇 = + 𝑆𝐹
4 6
With SF is straight flange height of the elliptical head. Usually between 81- 103
mm.
Straight flange head SF = 90 mm
Internal diameter ID = 1,000 mm
Top head volume VT = 0.20 m3
4.2.2 Bottom section volume calculation
Elliptical head are also chosen as bottom section of the [Link] volume of
elliptical head are calculated by following formula :

𝑉𝐵 = + 𝑆𝐹

Straight flange head SF = 90 mm
Internal diameter ID = 1,000 mm
Top head volume VB = 0.20 m3
4.2.3 Shell section volume calculation
𝑉𝑆 = 𝑉- 𝑉𝑇 - 𝑉𝐵
Shell volume VS = 5.68 m3
Shell height h = 7,230 mm
4.3 Compressor Recharge Flow Rate Calculation
Once the receiver presure has reached its lowest pressure (Pmin), the compressor
will start filling the receiver. It will stop when the air receiver reach the
receiver maximum pressure (Pmax). The compressor will deliver air to receiver at
outlet temperature of cooler, which assumed constant and equal to receiver supply
temperature (T). The time to refill/recharge the receiver is defined as refill
time (τrefill)
𝑉∆𝑃𝑜𝑝 𝑇𝑁
𝐹𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑝 = +𝐹
𝑇𝜏𝑟𝑒𝑓𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑃𝑁
Compressor recharge flow rate F_comp = 258 Nm3/h
