Unit V
Creative Fluency
• It is the ability to generate lots of ideas faster, not necessarily
different. Fluency is about generating ideas, not about evaluating
them. It is applied to read, write, think and produce something
with speed, accuracy and proper expression.
• Reading fluency : It refers to the reading and understanding at
faster rate . This ability helps recognition of words while reading
and comprehending. It manifests itself in the speed and accuracy
that one is able to read text. To achieve reading fluency, readers
must need to understand what they read. Children must be able to
read fluently whether they are reading aloud or silently. Knowledge
of the content of the language as well as the strong vocabulary will
help to improve reading fluency.
• Oral fluency or speaking fluency: It refers to both production and
reception of speech at faster rate. It helps to understand and
respond to others in conversation. This ability is adversely affected
by fragmentation, pauses, false starts, hesitation, repetition while
speaking. This fluency can be understood in terms of perception by
an individual.
• Written or compositional fluency: It refers to speed of word/
sentence formation while writing something. It is measured by
length of the composition (especially under timed conditions),
words produced per minute, sentence length, or words per clause.
Creative Flexibility:
This captures the ability to cross boundaries and make
remote associations. This ability helps to look at
something from a different angle or point of view,
shifting to an opposing viewpoint, angle, direction,
chronology, modality, putting yourself “in someone
else’s shoes.“
Flexibility is important:
• to understand more than one perspective on an
issue
• not to miss out on whole areas of possibility
• to promote interpersonal understanding
• to lead to original ideas and solutions
• to be able to interpret data in many different ways
(forming and checking hypotheses)
• to vary hypotheses for scientific method
Creative Elaboration
• Elaboration is a process in which creativity is used to
expand knowledge by new ideas without the need for
new information input. In creative elaboration, new
knowledge is helpful, but it is not necessary.
• Elaboration means “to explain something in greater
detail.” Being able to embellish an idea by adding details
to it thereby adding value and creating more interesting
ideas.
• An individual who has developed the skill of elaboration is
able to enhance an idea or concept by adding details that
help to bring the idea to life and create a better
understanding and appreciation of it. These additional
details can often transform an old idea into a new one
with greater potential.
• By elaborating on ideas we add new options and build
interest in the ideas by bringing them to life for others.
•
Creative Originality
• It is the ability to generate a product or idea that is
unique or very unusual, unexpected, first of its kind.
• Originality is the pinnacle of creativity. An original
work is one not received from others nor one copied
from or based upon the work of others.
• It is a work created with a unique style and
substance. It enables to get away from the obvious
and commonplace to generate novel ideas and
responses.
• A novice user who has developed originality will be
able to offer unusual responses to challenges. These
responses will be unexpected and unfamiliar and may
often lead to breakthrough solutions.
• By deliberate pushing for originality and novelty the
one can come out with breakthrough ideas to a
persistent problem.
