IIT BOMBAY
CE 102: Engineering Mechanics
Mid-Semester Exam
Maximum Marks: 30
Time: 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Date: 25th April, 2023
Notes:
1. Read the questions carefully.
2. There are 5 questions. Answer all the questions.
3. Draw FBD wherever necessary, show the steps clearly and mark the final answers.
4. Assume suitable additional data, if required, and state the same clearly.
Good Luck!
Q1. The piston rod of the hydraulic cylinder pinned at F exerts a force of 8 kN on member AB (Figure 1).
The pin at D connects two members CG and ED only (and not AB). Determine the resulting vertical
force applied by the roller at G on the wooden block for α = 10o. Note that α is the angle between
the vertical line and the line AEB. For this position, the piston rod of the hydraulic cylinder is
perpendicular to AB. Assume all members are weightless. (7 Marks)
Q2. A banner weighing 18 kN is attached by light, inextensible cables to truss at points C and D
(Figure 2). Determine the force in members AE, BE and ED of the truss. Clearly indicate if the
member is in tension or compression. (3 Marks)

Q3. The steel frame shown in Figure 3 is fixed into the wall at D and G. Steel rods AE and BF pass
through frictionless holes at A, B, E, and F. The moment reactions along x-axis and z-axis at ends
of rods AE and BF are negligible and can be assumed as zero. The frictionless pulley at H carries a
2.4 kN load. Determine all the reactions at D. Assume all members are weightless. (8 Marks)
Q4. The hydraulic cylinder shown in Figure 4 is connected to members BC and BD, which helps in
keeping the vertical gate closed against the pressure of fresh water on the opposite side. The gate is
rectangular with a horizontal width of 2 m perpendicular to the paper. For a depth of h = 3 m of
water, calculate the force that acts on the hydraulic cylinder. The gate weights 40kN, and all other
members are weightless. Assume the specific weight of water as 10 kN/m3. (4 Marks)

Q5. The movable bracket in Figure 5 is held at rest by a cable attached at E and four frictionless rollers
at A, B, C and D. The rollers are attached to the bracket. The width of post FG is slightly less than
the horizontal distance between rollers. Therefore, only two of the four rollers will be in contact
with the post for a specific value of α. For α=30o, determine the force exerted on the post by each
of the four rollers. Assume all members are weightless. (8 Marks)
