1 READING COMPREHENSION

Read the following passage and answer the questions below.

My father had a weakness for unusual pets. He bought Lolo from a street entertainer
for fifty rupees. The man had four monkeys. Lolo was the tiniest, but the most
naughty of them all. She hated being tied up. So father decided to buy her and let her
loose in the house. And what do you think Lolo did all day? She woke up with the
sun each morning and screeched outside our doors, scolding us for sleeping so late!
Since I was the youngest in the family, Lolo was at her naughtiest with me. If she
found me reading a book, she would jump upon me from wherever, and snatch it
away. Not satisfied with that, she would turn the house upside down and stole
bananas from the kitchen whenever she could. She teased our gentle dog Snowy till
he gave up and retired under the bed.

But still he lingered near,
And waited patiently about,
Till Mary did appear.
And then he ran to her and laid
His head upon her arm,
As if he said, ’I’m not afraid—
You‘ll shield me from all harm’.
"What makes the lamb love Mary so?"

2 .POEM COMPREHENSION

Read the following poem and answer the questions below.

Doors Need Care!

The door to my house at its edge it’s quite thin,

But it opens up wide to let people come in.

And when they’re inside, it shuts up quite tight,

To keep out the flies, the wind and the night.

One day in the morning when somebody knocked,

It refused to come open and stayed firmly locked.

“Why don’t you come open? “—I tried and tried,

But the door only grumbled, I am old and I am tired.

“My hinges are rusty, my handle is worn,

My step that you walk on is sad and forlorn”.

Got oiled and fixed on that very same morn.

The door’s yellow coat had grown very faint,

So I gave my front door a new coat of paint.

The door gave me a squeak and an opening yawn—

It isn’t much fun to be tattered and torn!

So, if the door at the front of your house,

Won’t even open enough for a mouse

Don’t get upset—no angry words spoken,

Just fix it all up so it is no longer broken!

1. READING COMPREHENSION Month: [November, 2012-13]

Read the following passage and answer the questions below

The koala is an endangered species. An endangered species is a certain kind of

animal that does not have enough members of its kind to survive. Animals that are
not protected may become extinct, or completely die out. The koala is partly to
blame for its own condition as an endangered creature. When you were younger,
were you a picky eater? Hopefully you listened to what your elders taught you and
ate your dinner. Koalas live in tall eucalyptus trees, also known as gum trees. Since
there are over 600 varieties of eucalyptus trees, the koala should have no trouble
finding food. However, koalas are even pickier than you ever were about what they
eat. Out of the 600 varieties, they will only eat the leaves of about 120 kinds of
eucalyptus trees. They would rather starve than eat the other kinds. Now that’s
stubborn! The biggest problem right now is that the brush land where many koalas
live in Australia is being cut down to make room for cities.

I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me,

And what can be the use of him is more than I can see.
He is very, very like me from the heels up to the head;
And I see him jump before me, when I jump into my bed.

The funniest thing about him is the way he likes to grow—

Not at all like proper children, which is always very slow;
For he sometimes shoots up taller like an India-rubber ball,
And he sometimes gets so little that there's none of him at all.

He hasn't got a notion of how children ought to play,

And can only make a fool of me in every sort of way.
He stays so close beside me; he's a coward you can see;
I'd think shame to stick to nursie as that shadow sticks to me!

One morning, very early, before the sun was up,

I rose and found the shining dew on every buttercup;
But my lazy little shadow, like an errant sleepy-head,
Had stayed at home behind me and was fast asleep in bed.

THE SONG OF THE ENGINE

When you travel on the railway,

And the lines go up a hill,

Just listen to the engine

As it pulls you with a will.

Though it goes so very slowly

It sings this little song,

‘I think I can, I think I can’

And so it goes it along.

But later on the journey,

When you’re going down the hill

The train requires no pulling,

And the engine‘s singing still.

If you listen very quietly

You will hear this little song,

‘I thought I could, I thought I could’

Children's literature, as exemplified by the passages and poems, integrates educational goals by embedding learning within engaging narratives. For instance, the stories of animals and their adventures often carry underlying messages about empathy, kindness, and environmental conservation, as seen in the stories of Lolo and Jimmy the Ape . Narratives such as 'The Titanic' and 'The Koala' provide historical and scientific awareness, enhancing understanding of significant events and ecosystems . Poetry like 'All things bright and beautiful' fosters appreciation for nature, teaching aesthetic appreciation and observation skills . Through engaging tales and vivid imagery, these works effectively teach values and knowledge by capturing children's imaginations.

Both poems deal with the theme of care and relationship. In 'Mary Had a Little Lamb', the lamb follows Mary due to the bond and love they share, as noted by the teacher explaining that 'Mary loves the lamb' and 'you, each gentle animal...if you are always kind' . In 'Doors Need Care!', the poem speaks to the necessity of maintenance and care for inanimate objects to ensure they function properly, reflecting that nurturing things leads to better outcomes, seen when the speaker fixes the door so it could open and close smoothly again .

Lolo, the monkey, experienced a significant amount of freedom in her owner's household, which allowed her mischievous nature to flourish, leading to disturbance and chaos within the house . In contrast, the bluebird in 'The Last Word of a Blue Bird' faced environmental restrictions with the arrival of the north wind, which forced it to leave . While Lolo’s freedom led to immediate playful chaos, the bluebird’s constraints due to weather changes compelled it to unwillingly detach from its environment to ensure survival, ultimately highlighting the balance between freedom and constraint affecting life experiences and choices of the creatures involved.

Both poems delve into the interplay between collective and individual experiences. In 'Scene at a Football Match,' the collective excitement and tension felt by the crowd as they watch a match highlight a shared emotional experience around an event, creating a charged communal atmosphere . Similarly, 'The Last Word of a Blue Bird' focuses on individual perception through the crow’s delivery of a message from the bluebird to Lesley, which relays personal emotions and experiences that contrast with others'. Both highlight how collective narratives can emerge from individual experiences, and individual stories can get lost or highlighted in the crowd’s overall perception .

In 'All things bright and beautiful,' nature is portrayed through a lens of admiration and divine creation, emphasizing its perfection and beauty as works of God. The poem lists various elements like 'each little flower,' 'the purple-headed mountain,' and 'the ripe fruits in the garden,' creating a vivid appreciation of the natural world . This depiction implies the importance of respecting and valuing nature as a creation meant to inspire awe and gratitude. Such portrayal can foster an appreciation for environmental conservation and the need for human beings to preserve the beauty and balance of the natural world.

The Titanic's journey is historically significant because it was deemed unsinkable yet ended tragically when it hit an iceberg and sank during its maiden voyage. This narrative highlights human expectations versus reality by showing how the faith in technological and engineering advancements led people to believe in the ship's invincibility, ignoring the inherent risks of such undertakings. The limited number of lifeboats for its many passengers and the crew's inability to avoid the iceberg despite warnings further illustrate a mismatch between expectations of safety and the reality of the situation, ultimately resulting in significant loss of life .

In 'Jimmy the Ape,' adaptation is portrayed through Jimmy’s return to the jungle after experiencing the city's hostility. Despite the opportunities the city could offer, Jimmy decides it is not worth compromising his natural habitat comfort, highlighting adaptation through choice and preference based on environmental comfort . Conversely, in 'The Koala,' adaptation is discussed in terms of limitations; koalas face difficulties as their specific eucalyptus habitats continue to shrink due to urbanization, reflecting an inherent failure to adapt caused by ecological destruction rather than choice, illustrating a struggle for survival due to external factors .

The presence of Lolo in the household, with her antics and interactions, provides children with a learning opportunity about consequences, animal behavior, and empathy. Lolo’s relentless teasing of the family member and the dog illustrates cause and effect, showing children how actions affect others and teaching lessons about boundaries, patience, and compassion by observing the impacts on the humans and animals involved . The narrative reinforces understanding of responsibility and the unpredictability that comes with taking care of pets, which in turn, enhances cognitive and emotional development through observing and reflecting on these dynamic interactions.

Lolo's freedom to roam inside the house had several impacts on the daily life of the family. She woke up with the sun every morning, screeched outside the doors, scolding the family for sleeping late, indicating an early start to their day whether they wanted it or not. She was particularly naughty with the youngest member of the family, often disturbing them by jumping on them and snatching books away while they read. Lolo also turned the house upside down, stole bananas from the kitchen, and teased the family's dog, causing him to retire under the bed, which suggests a chaotic environment .

The old crocodile's deafness symbolizes ignorance and insensitivity, leading to the tragic misunderstanding where it eats Eric, not realizing the value the other animals placed on his music . This highlights a moral lesson about the importance of communication and the need to be sensitive to one's surroundings and others' values. The crocodile's inability to enjoy what others cherish demonstrates how ignorance can lead to unintended harm, prompting reflection on the necessity of awareness and empathizing with different perspectives in a community.
