Understanding Chromosomes and Mitosis

The document discusses chromosomes, DNA, genes, and cell division. It defines chromosomes and DNA, describes that humans have 46 chromosomes in 23 pairs, and explains that genes are composed of DNA and control protein production. It also discusses the two types of cell division, mitosis and meiosis.

Study Notes:

1. Chromosomes are structures in cell nuclei composed of DNA and proteins.

2. DNA is a large molecule containing genetic instructions for living organisms.

3. Chromosomes become visible during cell division.

4. Each species has a distinctive diploid number of chromosomes; humans have 46.

5. Human chromosomes exist in 23 homologous pairs.

6. Genes are composed of DNA and determine specific characteristics.

7. Alleles are alternative versions of genes.

8. Genes control the production of proteins.

9. All cells within an individual have an identical gene combination.

10. Different alleles of a gene can exist.

11. Diploid cells have two complete sets of chromosomes; haploid cells have one set.

12. Chromosomes and genes are passed on through cell division.

13. Two types of cell division: mitosis (for body cells) and meiosis (for gametes).

14. Mitosis results in genetically identical daughter cells.

15. Mitosis has stages: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.

16. Mitosis is used for growth, repair, and asexual reproduction.
