A. DEFINITION
Narrative text is a text that tells a series of events sequentially and are connected
to one another. This type of text has an imaginative nature or an imaginary story that
aims to entertain the reader.
Generally, narrative text presents a story with problems that can trigger conflict to
attract readers' interest. Then, at the end the writer will close it with a happy or sad
ending.
B. SOCIAL FUNTION
Narrative text aims to entertain and interest readers. Narrative text presents a
story or event that has a problem. These problems can lead to conflict and at the end
of the story there is a resolution and have a sad or happy ending.
C. STRUCTURE
1. Orientation, is the initial paragraph that contains the introduction of the characters
involved in an incident in the story. In addition, the orientation contains the scene
and time of the story.
2. Complication, consists of paragraphs that explain the beginning of the event or
events. In the beginning, these events became a series of storylines which then
continued to conflict, climax and anti-climax.
3. Resolution, is the final part of the story. As the name implies, the third structure
of this narrative text contains completion.
D. TENSES
Using Past Tenses
Generally, narrative text uses past tenses in its preparation. This is because
narrative text tells about events in the past.
There are three types of Past Tenses generally used in narrative text, namely
Simple Past Tense, Past Continuous Tense, and Past Perfect Tense. The following is a
description of the explanation along with examples.
1. Simple Past Tense, is a tense that is used to express an event that occurred in the
past.
Example: The lion then grabbed the frightened mouse with his huge paws
2. Past Continuous Tense, generally to express an ongoing event in the past.
Example: One day there was a miser who sold all that he had to buy a lump of gold.
3. Past Perfect Tense
Past Perfect Tense is the tense used to express that there was an event or action that
was completed at a point in the past, before other events (in the past too) occurred.
Example: The baby had cried before her father came.
E. EXAMPLE OF NARRATIVE TEXT
True Friends
Once upon a time, there were two close friends who were walking through the
forest together. They knew that anything dangerous can happen any time in the
forest. So they promised each other that they would always be together in any case
of danger.
Suddenly, they saw a large bear getting closer toward them. One of them
climbed a nearby tree at once. But unfortunately the other one did not know how to
climb up the tree. So being led by his common sense, he lay down on the ground
breathless and pretended to be a dead man.
The bear came near the one who was lying on the ground. It smelt in his ears,
and slowly left the place because the bears do not want to touch the dead creatures.
After that, the friend on the tree came down and asked his friend who was on the
ground, "Friend, what did the bear whisper into your ears?" The other friend replied,
"Just now the bear advised me not to believe a false friend".
Moral of the story: True friend in need's a friend indeed.
