TASK : ASSIGNMENT 2
LECTURER : DR. LANGI
DUE DATE : 26TH FEBRUARY, 2024.
QUESTION ONE
a. From the theory of adhesive area.
Fa=Aτ…………………(i)
Material deforms until area of contact (A) is sufficient to support load (N)
𝑁
A=𝐻 ……………………...(ii)
Substituting equation (ii) into equation (i)
𝑁𝜏
Fa= 𝐻
To move surfaces sideways; it must overcome shear strength with force.
𝐹 𝐴𝜏 𝑁𝜏
µ=𝑁 =𝑁 =𝐻𝑁
𝜏
Thus µ= which is independent of the contact area.
𝐻
b. We know that
τ=Hµ
Given
H=455kgf/mm2
µ=0.16
τ=?
We know that
1N=0.102kgf
𝐾𝑔𝑓 1𝑁
455 x =4460.78N/mm2
𝑚𝑚2 0.102𝐾𝑔𝑓
1Kpa=0.001N/mm2
X =4460.78N/mm2
X=4460780Kpa
Thus;
τ=4460780Kpa (0.16)
=713724.8Kpa
c. Surface roughness is measured using roughness tester or profilometer by using stylus
which touch the component and analyses results which will be displayed on the
roughness tester screen. It provides quick measurement results at a favourable price than
the other methods. The working principle of stylus profilometer is to analyse the topography
using a probe(stylus) that moves physically along the surface to acquire the surface characteristics
such as height.
QUESTION 2
Given
Esteel =210Gpa , GSteel=81Gpa,
Ealuminium =70Gpa ,Galuminium=28Gpa,
Etitanium =120Gpa ,Gtitanium=45Gpa
Calculate coefficient of friction between,
a. Steel and aluminium
3𝐸+4𝐺 3(210)+4(81)
θ1= = =0.016565
𝐺(3𝐸+𝐺) 81(3(210)+81)
3𝐸+4𝐺 3(70)+4(28)
θ2 = = =0.048319
𝐺(3𝐸+𝐺) 28(3(70)+28)
F=1.07(θ1+θ2)2/3
=1.07(0.016565 +0.048319)2/3
=0.1728
b. Titanium and aluminium
3𝐸+4𝐺 3(120)+4(45)
θ1= = =0.02962
𝐺(3𝐸+𝐺) 45(3(120)+45)
3𝐸+4𝐺 3(70)+4(28)
θ2 = = =0.048319
𝐺(3𝐸+𝐺) 28(3(70)+28)
F=1.07(θ1+θ2)2/3
=1.07(0.02962+0.048319)2/3
=0.1952
c. Steel and Titanium
3𝐸+4𝐺 3(210)+4(81)
θ1= = =0.016565
𝐺(3𝐸+𝐺) 81(3(210)+81)
3𝐸+4𝐺 3(120)+4(45)
θ2= = =0.02962
𝐺(3𝐸+𝐺) 45(3(120)+45)
F=1.07(θ1+θ2)2/3
=1.07(0.016565+0.02962)2/3
=0.13773
d. It is observed that the coefficient of friction between steel and Titanium is the lowest and
coefficient of friction between Titanium and aluminium is the highest, it can be
concluded that lower shear strength takes lesser friction coefficient and lower coefficient
of friction suggests better lubricating properties.
