Scene 1: The Witches' Lair

Three WITCHES gather around a bubbling cauldron.

WITCH 1: Double, double toil and trouble,

Fire burn and cauldron bubble.

WITCH 2: Fillet of a fenny snake,

In the cauldron boil and bake.

WITCH 3: Eye of newt and toe of frog,

Wool of bat and tongue of dog.

WITCH 1: For a charm of powerful trouble,

Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

[Sound of thunder]

WITCH 2: By the pricking of my thumbs,

Something wicked this way comes.

Scene 2: Macbeth's Castle - Night

MACBETH and LADY MACBETH stand in their castle.

MACBETH: So foul and fair a day I have not seen.

LADY MACBETH: What is it that moves you, my lord?

MACBETH: Three witches met me by the way and told me I would be king.

LADY MACBETH: And you believed them?

MACBETH: Why, what should I not believe them? They spoke truth about the past.
LADY MACBETH: But they are witches, Macbeth. Their words are not to be trusted.

MACBETH: I know, but their words have stirred something within me. I feel like I could do anything.

LADY MACBETH: Then let us act. The king is coming here tonight. We must kill him and seize the
throne.

MACBETH: But that would be murder.

LADY MACBETH: It is not murder if you are the rightful heir. And besides, who would know?

MACBETH: I don't know. I'm afraid of what might happen.

LADY MACBETH: Don't be a coward, Macbeth. We can do this together.

MACBETH: Very well. I will do it.

Scene 3: The King's Chamber

KING DUNCAN sleeps in his bed.

LADY MACBETH: [Enters the chamber] He is asleep. The time is now.

MACBETH: [Enters the chamber] I can't do this.

LADY MACBETH: Yes, you can. Just do it.

MACBETH: [Raises his dagger] I'm sorry, your majesty.

[Sound of a scream]
Scene 4: The Aftermath

MACBETH and LADY MACBETH sit on the throne.

LADY MACBETH: We did it. We are king and queen.

MACBETH: But at what cost? We have killed the king.

LADY MACBETH: I know, but we had no choice. He was standing in our way.

MACBETH: But now we have to live with the guilt. We will never be able to forget what we have
done.

LADY MACBETH: I know. But you are king now. We have what we always wanted.

MACBETH: But is it worth it? Is the throne worth the price we have paid? I don't know. But I have no
choice now. I am king, and I must rule.
