CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 INTRODUCTION
Cylindrical concrete water tanks resting on ground are widely used in water and
wastewater treatment plants. The analysis of cylindrical walls subjected to axisymmetrical
loading is the focus of this research. In practice, the key application of this research is in the
design of cylindrical liquid storage tank walls. Cylindrical tanks' walls are exposed to radial
pressure from the contained liquid or, if underground, from externally retained earth. Axis
symmetrical radial displacement is generated by this method of loading. The top and bottom
wall edges may be free to rotate and translate, or they may be restrained by the cover or the
foundation. Walls of cylindrical tanks at bottom are connected to the base slab or annular
footing. Top may remain opened or covered by circular slab or other shells of revolution. In
this study, the wall is connected at the bottom to the base slab or annular footing and top is
open. The analysis is a solution to the governing differential equation that relating deflection
to applied load. This study presents a set of design tables for cylindrical walls with annular
footing, as well as a simplified analytical expression for measuring rotation at the wall bottom
joint for any cylindrical tank with finite dimensions.

1.2 OBJECTIVE OF THE WORK

1. To derive analytical solutions for design forces in cylindrical liquid storage tanks, such
as bending moment and hoop force.
2. Validate derived analytical solutions from objective 1 using the design codes/PCA that
are available.
3. To develop an analytical solution for wall base joint rotation and then estimate the
design forces, such as hoop force and bending moment, in cylindrical liquid storage
tanks as a result of this rotation.
4. To use numerical simulation (ABAQUS) to verify the derived analytical solution of
objective 3 and to extend the use of the model to cylindrical tanks with annular footing.

1.3 SCOPE OF THE THESIS

Water storage and wastewater treatment plants often use cylindrical concrete tanks that
rest on the ground. This research develops analytical expressions and a finite element model to
analyse a cylindrical concrete water tank. In addition, design tables for hoop force and bending

moment or tank walls resting on annular footing have been developed. The analytical
expressions and design tables provided in this study are intended to be useful to practising
engineers.
