TITLE: LANDSLIDE
General Statement:
A landslide is the displacement of a mass of soil or rock, which moves down or out of a slope
due to disruption of the stability of the soil or rocks that form the slope. Landslides can occur
suddenly and can cause damage to buildings and loss of life.
Explanatory Row:
The main causes of landslides are natural factors and human factors.
Natural Factors:
1. High rainfall, which can increase the water content in the soil and decrease the shear strength
of the soil.
2. Earthquakes, which can destabilize the slope and cause the ground to move.
3. Natural erosion of the foot of the slope, which can reduce the bearing capacity of the soil at
the bottom.
4. Weathering of rocks that can weaken slope structure.
Human Factors:
1. Illegal logging, which can reduce the strength of tree roots in holding the soil.
2. Construction of roads or settlements on steep slopes, without adequate slope reinforcement.
3. Mining of excavated materials at the foot of the slope, which can reduce the carrying capacity
of the soil.
4. Vibration due to heavy vehicle traffic around unstable slopes.
Impact and Solutions:
The impact that can be caused by landslides is very diverse, ranging from damage to
infrastructure, property, to casualties. Therefore, landslide prevention and mitigation efforts need
to be carried out, such as land use arrangement, slope strengthening, and disaster early warning
systems.
