Economic Implications of GST in India

The student initially wanted to analyze the economic implications of the Russia-Ukraine war but realized it would be difficult to collect primary data. The student then chose to analyze the impact of India's GST tax on the textile industry. The student gathered descriptive data without consulting their supervisor, negatively impacting the essay quality. With help, the student made their research question more concise and used primary survey research appropriately, though limitations were not fully acknowledged.

I initially wanted to analyse the economic implications of the Russia-Ukraine war.

I then realised that I

would face difficulties collecting data from primary research making my essay ineffective.
Furthermore, it would not be practical as we would not have been able to make correlations between
the war and economic implications which would be unjust to the research.

While searching for a new topic i was sure that i had to find something that was personally engaging,
and would provide a useful output, i recollected about how the government had introduced the GST
tax. I was then eager to research and understand its implications on the Indian economy.
After the selection of the topic I listed down all appropriate indicators of economic well being and
started to gather data. I was very lenient in my approach and did not proactively consult my
supervisor. This led to it negatively affecting the quality of the essay. I listed down a lot of indicators
and gathered data which was very descriptive.

I developed self management skills, and decided to make my RQ more concise to study its impact on
the textile industry in India. I with the help of my supervisors understood the criteria and then gather
primary research through survey after learning about and using purposive sampling. I then learned
about the limitations and mentioned them that had arisen in the research process.

I have developed better research skills and developed information literacy to find data through
government websites and publish reports/analysis by individuals to get the most accurate information,
moreover development of primary research and how to sample, gather and present information
appropriately is a part of what i learned while performing the analysis.

Overall this process helped me understand I assumed the implications to be very straight forward, how
it is hyphothesised to impact economically, which is different form its real implications that needed to
be studied. How inflation and price wars impact a firms output as a result, is something i had to dig
deep into to gain valuable output.

The economic implications of that were intertwined and linked, which during this process deepened
my perspective of economics subject as a whole to apply the conceptual understanding and analyse
the impact on the firm's output in real life through my extended essay report.

The extended essay taught me how the taxation reform impacted the industry, and how to analyse the
future implications of any major economic decision which will help me in the future in economics or
even in the textile industry being a part of my family business.
In the introduction, the student has appropriately posed the research question and justified its significance for
investigation. However, the data analysis lacks depth, with insufficient detail provided. The student has not
acknowledged the limitations of the arguments made during the research process. Although primary data has
been collected, its accuracy and alignment are questionable, and the presentation lacks statistical support,
being more generic in nature.

Furthermore, the student has not demonstrated a comprehensive understanding of economic theory and has
failed to apply it accurately. There is a notable absence of any discussion on unresolved questions in the
essay. While the conclusion aligns somewhat with the research questions and the overall argument,
improvements are needed. Overall, the essay falls short in providing a thorough and accurate exploration of
the chosen economic theory and its application. It is important to cite, wherever required.

Common questions

A lack of statistical support in economic research can undermine the reliability of findings and conclusions, making it hard to defend claims or draw substantial insights from the data. In the student's essay, this absence resulted in a generic presentation, and failed to effectively demonstrate the implications of GST on the textile industry, leading to weak interpretative power and academic contribution .

The alignment of primary data with research objectives is crucial as it ensures relevance and accuracy in findings, allowing for effective application of economic theories. In the student's essay, although primary data was collected, its alignment with the research objectives was questionable, and presentation lacked depth and statistical support, which negatively affected the analysis and conclusions .

Limitations in primary data collection can lead to questions about the validity and reliability of research findings because questionable accuracy and alignment with research objectives may result in misleading conclusions. For instance, if data lacks statistical support and is generic, as noted in the student's essay, it becomes difficult to derive meaningful insights or robust conclusions . Furthermore, these limitations might hinder the application of economic theories, making it challenging to have a significant impact on the topic studied .

Insufficient depth in data analysis can prevent the thorough examination of economic theories, making it difficult to understand their application effectively. This was evident in the student's essay, where the lack of detailed analysis hindered the ability to appropriately apply theories and resolve questions. Without deep analysis, correlations and implications of economic reforms cannot be fully understood, leading to superficial conclusions .

Accuracy of primary data is critical in verifying economic assumptions, as erroneous data can lead to incorrect hypotheses and conclusions. In the document, the student's primary data collection was questioned in terms of accuracy and alignment, which impaired the validity of their economic assumptions and hindered a true representation of the economic implications studied .

The student's selection process demonstrates the complexities in choosing a suitable research topic that is both engaging and feasible. Initially focusing on the Russia-Ukraine war's economic implications, the student realized the difficulties in primary data collection, prompting a shift to the Indian economy and GST's impact. This highlights the need for selecting topics with accessible and relevant data for effective research outcomes .

The introduction of GST in India was expected to impact the textile industry by standardizing tax frameworks and possibly affecting pricing and firm outputs. However, the student's observations lacked depth and statistical backing, indicating a need for further evaluation using aligned primary data to provide a clearer picture of GST's actual economic implications .

The student's approach highlights the importance of active consultation with supervisors during research. By being lenient and not proactively consulting, the student faced negative impacts on the quality of their essay. Regular feedback from supervisors can ensure that research stays focused on objectives, data collection is appropriate, and theoretical applications are accurate .

Developing self-management skills is vital for effective economic research as it helps in maintaining focus, time management, and adapting research methods responsively. The student's experience emphasized this, as despite initially struggling with topic alignment and data collection, learning self-management skills helped in refining the research question and developing better research techniques .

Poor data presentation can impact the academic value and effectiveness of an economic research essay by making it difficult for readers to understand or validate findings. In the discussed essay, generic presentation and lack of statistical support diminished the comprehensive understanding of the material and economic theory, thereby reducing its academic contribution and practical applicability .
