1.0 INTRODUCTION
OEM’s positive choke is used in high-pressure and high flow well service applications.
High pressure equipment, if not used and maintained properly, can cause serious injury
or death and damage to equipment and property. Not taking proper precautions and
failing to perform routine maintenance and inspections can also contribute to loss of well
control, and such loss could cause serious injury or death and damage to equipment
and property.
OEM’s positive choke is designed to decrease pressure in a fluid flow situation, as a
result, the velocity of the fluid stream increases drastically. Abrasive particles in the high
velocity flow stream can cause excessive and premature erosion to the choke
components. The downstream side of the choke though is protected by long wearing
carbide thus reducing this wear. Therefore, it is critical for safety and performance to
ensure the choke is installed such that the direction of flow is away from the bonnet on
adjustable chokes. Improperly flowing through the choke may cause damage and void
the warranty. It is not recommended.
ALL OPERATORS AND MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL SHOULD BE THOROUGHLY
TRAINED IN THE SAFE OPERATION, MAINTENANCE, AND INSPECTION OF THIS
EQUIPMENT.
This product is not designed to be used for fully stopping the flow of fluids. In systems
where this is required proper isolation valves should be used in conjunction with the
choke.
1.1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Positive chokes feature interchangeable components which give the operator maximum
flexibility of choice in arranging choke assemblies. By utilizing one body and changing
beans, seats and bonnet parts, it is possible to assemble either a combination choke
1.2 CHOKE SPECIFICATIONS
OEM’s chokes are available in 1” 1.1/4”, 2” and 3” maximum orifice sizes. The
components that comprise the choke are made from various materials. The body,
bonnet and seat are made from forged alloy steel. The choke seat and production or
flow bean is also made from stainless steel that been fitted with a solid tungsten
carbide.

2.0 OPERATION
POSITIVE CONFIGURATION
A positive H2 choke, the simplest production choke in the line has a blanking plug
assembly and flow bean in a standard body. Positive choke flow beans have a tapered
entrance to provide smooth fluid flow. With turbulence minimized, beans retain their
accuracy for longer time periods than with sharp-edged entry.
All standard positive choke under 15,000 psi working pressure are furnished with a
blanking plug that has a ½” npt port.
2.1 INSTALLATION
Install the choke in the line with the upstream piping / line. And Outlet of the valve is
connected to the downstream piping.
NOTE: - THE VALVE MUST BE INSTALLED IN THE PIPING AS PER INDUSTRY
ACCEPTED MOUNTED PRACTICE (i.e., BOLTING, GASKET AND THREADING) IT
IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE END USER TO CONFORM - AND INSTALL TO
THE DESIRED STANDARD.
IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF THE VALVE TO THE PIPING CAN RESULT IN
HAZARDS DOWN FLUID RELEASE AND / OR COMPONENT DAMAGE. THE
VALVE MUST NOT BE USED AS A SHUT-IN-DEVICE FOR DOWN STREAM
MAINTENANCE. IF TRIM DAMAGE HAS OCCURRED OR IF DEBRIS IS LODGED IN
THE TRIM, THE VALVE MAY NOT SEAT PROPERLY.

3.0 MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE
PREPARATION
It is not necessary to remove the choke from the tree (or the manifold) to perform the
procedures outlined below.
A. Close the valves necessary to isolate the choke being serviced form the well
pressure.
B. Place a warning tag on each valve closed in step 1 above, to prevent the opening
of the valves while maintenance is in process.
PERIODIC INSPECTION
Periodic inspections are required to ensure that all internal components of the choke are
working properly
Periodic inspection will include recertification of the choke which will include the
following
1. Inspection of the sealing surfaces, evidence of wear and pitting of all
components.
2. Disassembly.
3. Redressing.
4. Ultra-sonic inspection/minimum wall inspection.
5. Reassembly.
6. Pressure testing to100% the product’s working pressure.
7. Magnetic particle inspection (per request)

4.0 ASSEMBLY AND DIS-ASSEMBLY PROCEDURE
CHOKE BODY
A. Ensure that the choke needle is fully retracted.
B. Loosen the bleed plug to vent the body cavity. Slowly loosen the bonnet nut.
NOTE: Always stand to the side of the choke when removing the bonnet
assembly. Pressure may be trapped in the choke. H2 chokes have a built-in
feature that will allow any residual pressure to escape before the bonnet is
completely removed. The choke body is vented to the atmosphere after one
turn of the bonnet nut.
C. Once the pressure has been completely bled off, back off the bonnet nut and
remove the bonnet assembly.
D. Remove the seat assembly.
E. Inspect the following critical areas on the choke body:
1. The bonnet-to-body seal surface. Ensure that the surface is clean and free
from nicks and scratches.
2. The bore of the choke body that surrounds the bonnet. Ensure the bore is
clean and free from burrs.
3. The seat threads of the choke body. This area is susceptible to wear and
erosion. The threads should be free from burrs and trash. If the threads are
worn or eroded, the body should be returned to repair.
F. Clean the choke body O.D. threads, seat threads, and bonnet bore. Apply coat of
grease to these areas before re-installation.
BONNET NUT
A. Remove the bonnet nut from the blanking plug/bonnet assembly.
B. Visually inspect the bonnet nut O.D. and hammer lugs for abuse. If any of the
lugs are beaten down into the O.D. of the nut, the nut should be replaced.
C. Clean the threads with solvent and wire brush. This area is susceptible to wear
and corrosion. Inspect the threads.
D. After inspection, grease threads with heavy grease before re-installation.
BONNET BODY
A. Inspect the bonnet-to-body seal surface on the O.D. of the bonnet body.
Ensure that the surface is free from burrs or nicks.
B. Inspect the o-ring/bonnet gasket and groove in the bonnet each time the
bonnet is removed from the choke body. Remove any nicks or burrs with a fine
emery cloth.

C. Apply light coat of grease or heavy oil to seal surface of the choke body and
on o-ring/bonnet gasket before re-installation.
4.1 DISASSEMBLY OF POSITIVE CHOKE
1. Bleed all the pressure from the piping system, the valve must be partially opened
to ensure the pressure trap.
2. Detect any remaining pressure in the system if pressure exists, fitting should be
tightened and pressure should bleed off at the other appropriate source.
3. Loose / remove the nut by using a suitable wrench. always Wear eye protection
when striking the hammer
4. pull the bonnet assembly out of the body
5. disassembly bonnet assembly
Bonnet assembly is now completely disassembled
CHOKE – BEAN REMOVAL
Using a seat / bean wrench (wrench are available from OEM’S) remove the bean by
sliding wrench over the seat hex. Care must be taken that wrench operation should not
damage to the bean. Turn the wrench counter clockwise to un screw the bean from the
body, once the bean completely unscrews, carefully remove it from the body remove the
seat gasket.
ASSEMBLY OF THE POSITIVE CHOKE
Place the seat gasket in holding with bended ribs (by using player) so that the gasket
easily passes through to the choke seat collar recess, once the gasket is rested on the
collar straighten the ribs. Place the seat hex on the seat wrench. hex grease the choke
seat threads and then place the flow bean in the choke body with the bean wrench
holding the flow bean hex, turn the wrench counter clockwise to tighten the bean to the
position (120 ft.–lbs.). Remove the flow bean wrench and store for the future.
NOTE: BONNET ASSEMBLY IS READY TO BE INSTALLED ON THE BODY,
BEFORE INSTALLING THE BONNET CHECKS FOLLOWING ITEMS:
a. Choke bean in the body
b. Bonnet oil ring is installed and it is greased.
