Ricebean:
High valued fodder crop

Ricebean (Vigna umbellata) is an underutilized, neglected legume considerd as a minor food and
fodder crop of northern and north-east India, grown in a range of cropping systems mainly with
maize during summer or alone in uplands, terraces, rice bunds, jhum field, backyard of home
and in small patches. It is mainly grown for human consumption, and also used for fodder and
green manure. Ricebean foliage and dry straw are nutritious livestock feed and provide higher
productivity and quality fodder if sown with cereal likes maize and sorghum. Hence there is need
to focus about ricebean crop to utilize as a high nutritious fodder crop inspite of used as green
manure or other purpose. More emphasis has been given for popularizing a high nutritious fodder
crop as a potential legume crop among the farmers.
