My capstone project experience was a roller coaster.

I had an idea to start a middle school

fitness club at Sport and Medical Sciences Academy at the start of the school year to engage

young students into physical activity. This project began in late November 2023. Middle

schoolers showed short attention spans and disobedient behavior, making it challenging to get

their attention. The middle school students improved over time in terms of their behavior,

academic performance, and athletic abilities. I enjoyed working with this particular group of

students because I could see the effect I had on them.

Everything was going well with this project until I got told from a staff member that my

accumulated hours will not be counted because they were only completed during advisory. I was

devastated because I no longer had a capstone project. I changed my capstone project to take

place after school, but as soon as I distributed the permission slips, I found out that spring sports

would be taking place in the main gym and field house. I had to cancel my middle school fitness

club as a result of this.

Since it was late January and I had no project, I realized that in order to complete my

capstone project, I needed to come up with a fresh idea immediately and work twice as hard. I

reached out to my volleyball coach and offered to help out during the boy's volleyball season. He

recommended I take the role of being the manager, which is how I came up with a new idea for

my capstone project.

I dedicated my new capstone project to staying connected in the sports industry and

within my school’s community. I was the manager for SMSA/Bulkeley boy’s co-op volleyball

team and my responsibilities as manager were helping out with drills during practice, keeping

track of the scoreboard and the game book, and organizing senior night. Throughout my project,

I learned about organizational skills, communication, and working with a specific age group.
I was fortunate enough to have senior seminar in my first semester and because of this I

was able to complete the details needed for my e-portfolio such as an about me, capstone

proposal, research paper etc. Although I had senior seminar in my first semester, I had to

overcome challenges along the way. I had to start over from scratch and work with people I have

never met before. As the boy’s volleyball manager, it forced me out of my comfort zone and it

provided me with a firsthand experience of what it's like to manage a sports team.

As an athlete, it is very important to maintain a good academic standing to be able to

participate in the sport you love. Without athletics I believe that students would struggle in

school due to the lack of motivation. I believe that participating in sports encourages an athlete to

perform better in school. During the boy’s volleyball season, we had a student athlete that

became ineligible to continue playing due to his grades. His involvement in volleyball motivated

him to get in touch with his teachers and ask for the help he needed to improve his grades. I

suggested that he get in touch with those particular teachers and ask for extra credit or about the

possibilities of turning in his incomplete assignments as late work. After his grades improved, he

became eligible to go back to play. This demonstrates how participating in athletics as a part of

your daily routine influences your academic performance.

I experienced the disappointment from the losses of games and the joy from defeating the

teams the boys thought they couldn’t beat. I witnessed each player on the court hustle for every

ball to win. Every practice, every setback, and every victory showed the team and me that

although we all have unique skills, we can achieve our goals as a team if we work together.

I was nervous when I entered the main gym for the first practice. Among the entire team,

I knew only two people. Everybody intimidated me. During the first volleyball week, nobody

talked to me. The team and I had very little to no conversation. I came to the realization that I
would not get in touch with people if I did not take the initiative and put myself out there. I had

to keep in mind that I was new to the team and that the other kids also needed to gain my trust.

Walking onto a team where everyone knows each other and you’re an outsider can be difficult

because you have to build a relationship with each other.

Overall, I believe that my capstone project was a success. I’ve always had athletics a part

of my life and it taught me to never give up when I had difficulties throughout my capstone

journey. I had a difficult beginning to my capstone project, but I was able to overcome it and

finish it because of my perseverance and commitment. I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish

my goal if it wasn’t for my mentor and the new friends I made from the volleyball team that

supported me.
