The grade range is good and there are lots of quality routes for those looking between 4a

When to Go
Cala Firriato Area
Sicily is the hottest of all the Italian regions. Some say it is still possible to climb all year
round, although this isn't recommended! The main climbing season is from October through
to mid-May with the optimum time being mid-November to the end of April. The best
temperatures are arguably in December and January when there is little humidity and there
are often clear blue skies, though less daylight to take advantage of.
Monte Monaco
The winter months can have their fair share of wet weather but even after the heaviest of
downpours the rock is often dry within 30 minutes. Prolonged periods of rain will cause the
tufas to seep.
More often than not, the problem is the heat and with many of the crags facing west, shade
is not always easy to find. In these conditions it is a good idea to start early using the shady
Scogliera - North
mornings and cooler evenings for climbing with a siesta in between. There are some east-
facing walls including those on Monte Monaco - check the table on p.38 - which may offer
afternoon options.
The steep mountains around the San Vito peninsular have been known to trigger the
occasional thunderstorm and also vortex activity (including water spouts in the bay, which
Scogliera - Central
can be exciting to watch). The area also has its own climate which can bring good weather
when other areas are poor.
It is worth noting that San Vito is a summer holiday resort and many of the restaurants and
bars close down in the winter months. There are still a few places to check out though and
the supermarkets are open as usual.

street food is very popular there.
San Vito has many restaurants and bars offering fine food, but the selection is significantly
more limited in the winter months when it can be something of a ghost town.
For those self-catering, the largest supermarket is Mio Mercato on the main strip running
down into San Vito. There is another smaller supermarket in the town as well.

Italian public holidays and festivals are worth keeping an eye on, as climbing areas can
get busier at these times and some (but not all) restaurants, shops and bars have more

documented in detail in this book.
Ropes - The majority of climbs are between 20m to 35m in length and a 60m rope can
leave you short in a lot of places. A 70m single rope is strongly advised and a small
number of routes need an 80m or longer (although these tend to have mid-point lower-

offs). Most of the multi-pitch routes can be done on a single 60m ropes, but you are
strongly advised to take two 60m ropes either for descent, or in case you have to retreat.
Other Gear - For multi-pitch routes, a small sack with a water bladder and a long-
sleeved shirt is a good idea. It is recommended that you wear a helmet. A head torch

is useful since it can get dark very quickly here in the winter months. There is also a
floodlit crag (p.224) where a head torch is required for the unique experience of night
climbing.

The photo-topos have approximate heights indicated at specific points. These are
guideline heights only and it is important to remember that crag bases are not always
level, people stand in different places when belaying and belays can be moved when
routes are re-bolted. Many climbers don't even know the exact length of their rope,
having chopped ends of worn rope off in the past. The golden rule is be on your

contact Daniele Arena (danielearena@hotmail.

check if development is allowed on the cliff, get
advice on bolting and ensure you are using
the correct bolts which need to be ultra-high
corrosion resistance to protect from the sea air.
No other bolts are permitted to be used in the

is underway and many inadequate bolts are
being replaced with corrosion-resistant bolts,
specifically titanium ones.

If you find routes with bad or missing bolts then

Stick to the approach paths - Avoid shortcuts which
create unnecessary new paths.
Scogliera - North
Take all rubbish home - Leave only footprints and take
out everything you bring to the crag as well as rubbish
dumped by other less considerate folk. #leavenotrace.
Scogliera - Central

Avoid leaving valuables in cars - Car theft is not a big
problem in Sicily, so let's keep it that way by leaving the
cars empty when we are out for the day.
Scogliera - El Bahira
Sanitation - If you have to go to the toilet when out,
make sure you go well away from the crag and any water
sources, bury your waste and carry out any paper.

Large groups - If visiting in a large group, don't hog routes
and try to car share to avoid filling up parking spots.
