Why Amazon wants customers on license included RDS?
• They control your Oracle environment
• Higher hourly billing than EC2 –paid on consumption
• Customers pay Amazon to grow their Oracle environment,
• Easier to get customers to “scale up”, more consumption
• Push customers to terminate their relationship with
License
Included
Oracle
Oracle Standard Edition One • They force customers to buy AWS support (more spend)
Oracle Standard Edition Two • They have Oracle licenses they need to consume
• They make no effort to make sure customers Oracle
application runs as efficiently and best as possible
• Its much easier to migrate to one of their databases from
a managed Oracle environment than from an
infrastructure environment.
• They will propose an “automated” migration as the next
step
What Amazon tells customers to make it look compelling…

• You can do everything you need to do with Standard Edition, ignoring RDS, and Standard
Edition limitations
• Save money by cancelling Oracle support and that will pay for your RDS service
• Terminate your licenses with Oracle, you don’t need then with RDS license included
• We will do all the managing you need for your database including upgrades an backups
• We can provide you the high availability you need
• Better integration to Amazon AWS ecosystem
What Amazon does not tell customers about Oracle on RDS
license included….but you should!
• Customers loose their Oracle Database entitlement and support investment. Going back to
infrastructure involves re-purchasing licenses or paying back support
• Customers “downgrade” to standard edition
• Multitenant is not supported:
• AWS prefers database sprawl to increase use, $$$
• A managed environment does not match the operational advantages of multitenant
• future releases of Oracle only run on multitenant, you may not be able to upgrade
• Oracle RAC applications are not supported
• Many other features and options are not supported on RDS
• Customers sacrifice Oracle built in high availability and DR for AWS provided storage replication (and
potential 2x licenses), a technique that has repeatedly resulted in corrupt databases (no ADG, GG, RAC)
• Customers sacrifice security because SE is less secure than EE
• Customers loose direct Oracle support and have to rely on AWS “limited” support. For anything but
simple issues, customers will have to re-engage with Oracle or another 3rd party support organization
• AWS support cost is based on consumption and unpredictable
• No access to database host environment to install tools (Oracle or 3rd party), do performance analysis,
control environment.
Amazon RDS Oracle doesn't support the following Oracle features:

Oracle on EC2 BYOL advantages over RDS license included
• Customers don’t need to downgrade to Standard Edition
• Database supported by Oracle, don’t have to pay for basic AWS support
• Provides full control over the database and access to its underlying
operating system.
• Customers control backups, replication, and clustering.
• Customers can use features and options that aren’t supported by
BYOL
*ANY* Amazon RDS.
• Customers can use a specific Oracle Database version that aren’t
Any Edition
supported by Amazon RDS.
Any Release
• Database size and performance are not restricted by Amazon RDS
offerings.
• Customers can avoid automatic software patches that might break their
applications.
• Customers need higher IOPS and provision storage capacity than the
current RDS limits.
• Need high availability with Data Guard, Active Data Guard or
GoldenGate
How is Oracle supported in AWS?

• BYOL:
• Under this model, customers continue to use their active Oracle support account and contact
Oracle directly for Oracle Database specific service requests. If they have an active AWS
Premium Support account, they can contact AWS Premium Support for Amazon RDS specific
issues. Amazon Web Services and Oracle have multi-vendor support process for cases which
require assistance from both organizations.

• License Included:
• In this model, if customers have an active AWS Premium Support account, they contact AWS
Premium Support for both Amazon RDS and Oracle Database specific service requests.
Tell your customers of the support risk they are taking by moving to
RDS license included model

Critical applications on license included RDS are at risk of poor support AWS Premium Support

• You must purchase AWS Premium Support –

• AWS Support Business and Enterprise levels include:

• limited support for … stack components. AWS Support engineers can
assist with the setup, configuration, and troubleshooting

• If they cannot resolve Oracle issue:

• we will collaborate with, or refer you to, the appropriate vendor support
for that product

• For other more advanced topics such as performance tuning,

troubleshooting of custom code or scripts, security questions, etc. it may be
necessary to contact the third-party software provider directly (aka Oracle)
Show your customers that going from licensed EE to RDS License

The game changer – if your customer is dead set on SE1/SE2 RDS
let them know what they are missing out on by not going to Oracle Cloud

1- BYOL SE2 licenses => Autonomous DB

• It's a straight-up 1 processor (socket) to 4 OCPUs BYOL mapping with no DB Options
Licenses required (page 95)
• Using Autonomous Data Guard does not require any additional licenses

2- BYOL to Oracle Cloud allows the following products to be used without licensing:
• Data Masking and Subsetting Pack, Diagnostics Pack, Tuning Pack, and Real Application
Testing, Transparent Data Encryption
Top 5 + 1 reasons Amazon RDS for Oracle is a bad idea

• You don’t get Oracle support. You have to pay Amazon for “limited” support
• You cannot run Oracle high availability, RAC, ADG. Your HA depends on Amazon
• You cannot run Multitenant
• You can only run specific versions with specific patch sets of the Oracle database
• You can only take advantage of a subset of the Oracle Database functionality even with
BYOL
• Unless you BYOL, you have to run Standard Edition which has functionality and capacity
restrictions
Top 5 + 1 reasons why running Oracle on OCI is better

• Ok: 5 + 1 + one more – Leverage ULA2PaaS discounts, not available on RDS or AZURE
• You get full end-to-end full Oracle support
• This is where we develop, and where the latest and greatest Oracle products are
• You can use all database functionality including Multitenant, RAC, ADG, Security
• Its faster and cheaper
• You can BYOL any version of the database you want making it an ideal deployment option
for a hybrid architecture
• You have the option of running Autonomous Database
