-Description of the project
Back when we started at the Bonnefanten museum I was not really paying attention
and we were kind of messing about. I really only started to look at the art in the
museum the last hour, which was a pity because what I saw was really great and I
wished I had spent less time messing about and more time looking at the art. I could
not really find anything that really spoke to me, until the last 10 minutes. I found the
painting: Girl in white with trees. It really reminded me of scene from I childhood
book that I read years ago that I, unfortunately, could not find. The contrast between
the darkness that surrounds the girls and the light that is the girl really drew my
attention. The painting was also way bigger than the rest of the paintings in the room,
which I liked; I like big paintings. The painting made me feel different than any of the
other ones so I chose it as my pick. My initial idea was to recreate the painting in a
way that reminded me of the scenery of the book and would give me the same
feeling as the book. So, I started working towards that and started drawing how the
painting and the memory of the book made me feel. At the beginning I did not really
do a lot during the CAD lessons, this is something I have to work on in the future. But
when I did more research into the painting I got more and more ideas of things I
wanted to do and I genuinely wanted to do something in the lessons and make
something of this project, so that is what I did. When I thought more and more about
the painting I started to ask myself all kinds of questions: Why is the girl in the
painting there? Where is she from? How did she get there? Why is she alone and
where even is she?. I started to create my own imaginary world around the painting
and I wrote down my thoughts and ideas. I then sketched an image of the forest the
girl was in and I wrote a finished story/ synopsis about this imaginary universe. After
my one on one talk with Mr Sleijpen he told me to look into surrealism, so I did. I
found out surreal art is really different and cool and it fitted just right with what I
imagined for my final painting. He also gave me the idea of creating a trilogy. I have
this sort of trilogy painting hanging next to my desk and when I looked at it I realised
Mr Sleijpen’s idea was a good one and I wanted to make a trilogy myself in which I
would incorporate elements of surrealism. I then started drawing a sketch of how I
would divide the three panels and what I would draw on each of them. I came up
with a perspective from the girl’s point of view, a perspective from the third person
viewing the girl (like in the original painting and the book), and a birds eye view from
above the forest. I later changed this sketch and used it for my end product. The last
sketch is really important because it shows the situation and the world the girl is in. I
started sketching this idea in class. This was my last sketch. With this new idea and
the synopsis in mind I started making the end product into what it is now. I also
changed the ‘girl’ to something that was more mysterious. I purposefully chose to
make the whole end product at home so no one could disturb me and it was easier to
4
work on it here than it is at school. I first drew with pencil so that I could erase any
mistakes and when I was finished I redrew it with a coal.
In some places I kept only the pencil because I thought it would look better than with
the coal. I am not very good at drawing so for me it was easier to work with pencils
and coal than it is to work with actual paint. I used the coal because it fits really well
with the dark theme I was going with and it was easy to use in my opinion. I tried to
incorporate elements of surrealism but I don’t really know about any special
techniques, I just drew what felt right. So now the final product is a trilogy of 1. The
POV of the ‘thing’, 2. the POV of a third person (a being living in the abyss in this case)
and 3. A birds a eye view of the world we are in. In the end I am really happy with the
end product I created and I can really see how I slowly worked towards this end
product and what influenced my decisions and that is really cool to see. I enjoyed
these last two CAD terms more than the first one, probably because is started to take
it more seriously. I also did keep track of my logbook very well. I should have been
working on this seriously from the beginning, and that is what I am going to do in the
future as well. I am happy with where I am at now and the final product I delivered.

-Self-Reflection
Logbook
9-11-21
We went to the Bonnefanten Museum. I really enjoyed the visit and I filled in the first
few things on the booklet. I chose what artwork I wanted to be working on for the
rest of the term and I chose Girl in the white with trees by Peter Doig.
12-11-21
During the lesson we were told what we would be doing for the coming term and I
answered some more question on booklet and researched a bit about the painting I
chose.
03-12-21
6
I did almost nothing during this lesson, me and my friends were just messing about.
We also had a long talk this lesson with Mr Sleijpen about our previous project which
did not go too well.
10-12-21
I worked on some of the questions on the booklet and I thought about what I should
be sketching and what I would make of my end product. We did answer some
hypothetical questions that were on the board
17-12
We did an assignment with faces where we had to make one half of a face and let
someone else do the other half of the face. This was the possible word and it was a
really fun assignment,
14-01-22
I finished the booklet of the Bonnefanten museum.
21-01-22
I did my first sketch and I worked on this the whole lesson. I thought about the
painting and the bold book I read and I also took some elements of doodles which I
draw in class a lot when I am bored
28-01-22
I drew another sketch but this time I looked more at the painting from Doig and I
tried to incorporate some of the symbolism he also used in his painting. I drew a
different kind of sketch than the week before and I also used different colours.
04-2-22
I drew another sketch. It was kind of the same as the first one I drew but I just
wanted to see which one I liked better, the second or the third because they have
different styles. Based on my judgement I would work this idea out further.
25-02-22
I drew a sketch in all black and only the white from the girl is left over. So I drew a
negative space really. This sketch looked a lot like the actual painting that I wanted to
recreate at that point.
7
11-03-22
I finished the sketch I started working on before the holidays. This is the only thing I
did all lesson.
18-03-22
I had a one on one talk with Mr Sleijpen and I made the sketch about the trilogy. The
same day at home I made up the story/synopsis. This would lay the basis for the story
I would later make.
25-12-22
I sketched the island I had in mind. I did some thinking at home and my story would
take place in a fantasy world so I thought it would be cool to make it a floating island.
26-03-22
I started working on the final product and I worked out the CSP3 file at home. I
worked a lot today and also made the word document in which I would put
everything together,
27-03-22
I worked some more on the CSP3 and the rest of the word document. I wrote a bit
about the description of the project and worked out large part of the logbook.
29-03-22
I finished my final product, reflection, description and everything else in the word
document. I am ready to hand in my final product now.

-Synopsis/Story
Far into the future or the past, beings who live in the realm of light have developed
photosynthesis to sustain themselves; war and poverty don’t exist. These beings
don’t speak for they have a mutual understanding that does not require
communication. Beyond the realm of light is the abyss, also referred to as the dark
realm. No one dares to enter this territory, why would they? No one ever gets to
close, the borders randomly expand and minify at any given time and you don’t want
to get caught. The closer you get to the border the more beautiful the land becomes,
but when you cross the border….
Something is ignorant, and tempted by the beauty of the land and decides to live
there for a while. The land becomes more and more beautiful every day and
something is too ignorant to realise what is coming until it is there.
Now something is in the middle of the abyss, all alone. Something does not know
how to get out, nothing has ever been there before. Something may be stuck in the
dark, forever….

If you need more space to answer these questions, use new sheets of paper. Better: use the
digital version and expand the answers.
1 Describe your expectations on the beginning of the CAD course.
I expected to go to different kind of shows in the theatre and analyse these
performances. I also expected to do a lot of drawing, painting and other kinds of
creative assignments. I expected different group and individual projects.
2 Did these expectations come true? 0 yes 0 no
In what way did they (or did not) come true?
We did individual and group projects which I liked. We got a lot of freedom in the
things we want to do. In this period for example, we could make an end product
about whatever we wanted to which was really cool.
Though we did not go to the theatre to watch live performances we did go to the
movies a few times which was also really fun.
3 What was a pleasant surprise or what was a let-down for you. Give actual
examples and explain.
Going to the movies with school for a CAD exercise is always fun. I also liked the
freedom we got this period in terms of what we wanted to do with the Artistic
research project. I can’t really remember a time where I was really let down by
something related to CAD.
4 Which CAD disciplines did you deal with or did you encounter in class, or outside
class?
We dealt with performing arts, performance arts, photography, film, dance (pole
dancing in my case), all kinds of different art (modern art, surreal art, poetry-Poetry
Slam, painting, drawing)
5 Which artworks from the lessons or (museum) visits do you remember? Describe at
least three actual examples. Mention artist and artwork. What appealed you?
1. Girl In White with trees – Peter Doig
The size of the painting and the dark colours that were in contrast to the girl in the
middle really spoke to me. All your attention was drawn to this painting. It fitted in with
the other paintings in the room yet it stood out for me.
11
2. Wanderer above the sea of fog – Caspar David Friedrich
I always liked this painting because it is just so beautiful. I had a fake of this painting
hanging in my old house when I was younger. I also played a lot of Minecraft when I
was younger and this painting was in that game so I remember it from that as well.
The man looking down on the sea of fog is just really beautiful.
3 Girl with a pearl earring – Johannes Vermeer
We watched a movie about the story of this painting back in the 3rd grade during a
history lesson. I really liked the movie and the painter is Dutch. We used this painting
for the food project at the beginning of 4th grade, for which we made a pizza in the
shape of the girl.
6a Describe the subject of analysis of discap 1 FILM
We went to the movies and we watched J’ai perdu mon corps. We filled in a
questionnaire about the movie. We also made a stop motion video about a boy who
lost his home and fled to the Netherlands because of the wars in the middle east
6b Describe the subject of analysis of discap 2 THEATER
We watched and analysed a video of a live performance by Madonna. We where
than free to choose what kind of performing art we wanted to do so we went with pole
dancing. We did research about pole dancing and made a big mindmap.

6c Describe the subject of analysis of discap 3 Visual arts and design and fashion.
We did a lot of assignments from KUHV and we did the walk through Maastricht
where we had to take pictures and answer questions. We also made a chindogu.
This was all part of the art based learning process. In this period I researched the
Wanderer above the sea of fog.
6d Describe the subject of analysis of discap 4 RITUALS (art, performance.)
We went to landbouwbelang and we made our own masks. This was for the initiation
ritual that we performed. We were free to choose any ritual and research that ritual
and we chose the African initiation ritual. We then made a poster about the ritual and
our masks.
12
7 Which cap was the most memorable and why?
The discap Film was the most memorable for me. The project where we had to make
art out of food was really fun and something I had never done before. This made me
like CAD a lot. The stop motion video was also really fun to make with my friends.
8a Describe briefly your Artistic research assignment: your question and your topic.
We had to choose a painting from the Bonnefanten Museum which we had to
research. During the period we had to find our own way towards answering the
question we wrote down at the museum and why we chose the painting we chose.
My question was: What form of art do I enjoy the most.
8b Describe briefly the relevant findings of your research.
I found that the painting was inspired by the painters family and their house back in
London where he saw a similar type of image when he looked out the window to his
daughter. He addressed this painting to his daughter and he tried to put his emotions
towards her in this painting. So you could say the girl in the middle is his daughter.
The wrinkled and twisted trees stand symbol for a clouded, wild and uncertain mind
of a teenager and also for temptation.
9 Which people influenced your view and opinion of art and in what way…
Ms Hommen taught me a lot about art when she was my teacher in the last couple of
years. She made me understand the importance of art and what is can mean for a
person. Mr Sleijpen also helped me understand my own taste in art better. After we
had a conversation about my project and progress he told me about surrealism as an
art form. This was a very interesting new art form that I knew about but never really
looked into until then.
10 Did the CAD course have any impact on your taste, perception or outlook on art?
CAD taught me to appreciate art more and it taught me art is an expression of
emotion through something that isn’t always in words. It could be anything you want it
to be.
11 Describe the value of the course for your future artistic and cultural development.
Now that I already have learned the basic fundamentals of art and learned about
different types of art, I think it will be easier in the future to look into new art forms
and learn new things about different art topics. Now it is easier for me to understand
the meaning of a certain art piece and understand the emotions the creator put into
his work and understand the message he is trying to convey.
