Orifice Flow Experiment Guide

This document describes a laboratory experiment to determine the coefficient of velocity of an orifice flow. The experiment uses a hydraulic bench, orifice apparatus, ruler, caliper, paper and pen/marker. The procedure involves positioning the reservoir and orifice plate, turning on the pump, measuring the head, releasing needles to mark the jet location, and repeating for a second orifice plate. The conclusion discusses uses of orifices in engineering and how increasing pressure on an orifice increases discharge volume.

Orifice Flow

I. Introduction

An orifice is a hole in a wall that controls or measures flow. Orifices alter the streamlines of the jet
as they approach and exit the notch, and they come in a variety of forms, sizes, and characteristics.
The real velocity is equivalent to a value smaller than the theoretical value velocity, which is referred to
as coefficient velocity.

II. Objective

• To determine the coefficient of velocity of an orifice flow using the principle of projectile.

III. Apparatus/Materials

• Hydraulic Bench
• Orifice Apparatus
• Ruler
• Vernier Caliper
• Paper
• Pen/Marker

IV. Procedure

1. Position the reservoir across the channel on the top of hydraulic bench and level.
2. Install the first orifice plate by tightening the knurled knot.
3. Turn on the pump and open the bench valve gradually.
4. Position the overflow tube to give a high head. Note the value of the head.
5. Release the screw for each needle in turn and move the needle until its point is just immediately
above the jet.
6. Attach a sheet of paper between the needle and the board and clamp it to secure its position.
Provided its upper edge is horizontal.
7. Mark the location of the top of each needle on the paper.
8. Repeat the process for the second orifice plate.

VIII. Discussion of Results/Conclusion

Aside from measuring fluid flow in pipelines and reservoirs, orifices have a wide range of uses in
engineering. Flow entering a culvert or storm drain entrance may behave as orifice flow; another
example is the bottom exit of a dam. The velocity and discharge coefficients are required to correctly
anticipate flow rates from orifices. As the pressure pressing on the orifice increases, the volume of fluid
discharge will rise.
