Module 2 - Good Citizenship Values

I. Cite personal incidents / moments in your life that you feel you have become:

1. Maka-Diyos
I grew up in a family of a Christian-Catholic, so since I was young, I am aware that we have
God—who is watching over us. We pray before meals daily, go to church every Sunday, and
occasionally, we pray the Rosary. But, when I was young, it felt like, it was just like an obligation to
pray or to hear mass. So, it came to a point where I don’t participate in these “activities” anymore.
Until 1 Sunday, during the Father’s mass, it flashed it the screen that our church will have a weekend
seminar which called PREX (Parish Renewal Experience). My Mom was ecstatic to sign us up in this
said seminar, together with my 2 other siblings. However, I, myself, were also so curious and
interested in the seminar. It was a 3-day seminar in our church where they conducted activities that
harnessed in the ways and words of God. Through PREX, that was the moment where I felt the grace
of the Lord. How I am so unworthy of the things that I have in my life. I also was able to treasure the
gift of family—it really felt so overwhelming to be able to experience all those grace and blessings
alongside with my siblings. I also learned how to be so contended with the life God has given me and
my family, for other’s had it worse. Since then, I get involved to other activities in our church and pray,
not just when I need something, but also to give thanks.

2. Makatao
I came from a very humbled family; my father who had rough childhood for not having a
privilege to study; my mother who came from a 12-member family. So, growing up, we were raised as
“magtiis mamalugtod kung maikli ang kumot”, although my father had a decent paying job in the city
hall, we still don’t get to have a very comfortable life, because I have 5 siblings. With that being said,
my parents also raised us by always being considerate of others—to always check if meron pa ba ang
iba, being helpful to those in need, and being kind and respectful, not just to elders but to all ages.
Those teachings and experiences from my parents have become a very important part of my life as
being makatao. I always get the notion of “ang bait bait mo kasi”, to be honest, it has a negative
effect on me, but for me, just being people person will always bring you to the brighter side and lead
you to the quality of life. Even if the world is so mean to you, wag kang gaganti. And as long as, wala
akong tinatapakan na tao, I know I am in the right side of humanity. And being makatao, gives you an
inner peace of mind that you owe to yourself.
3. Maka-kalikasan
Both my parents have green-thumb, so, I grew up in a home where there’s plants, fruit-
bearing trees, and flowers in our backyard and garden. Since I was young, I am already aware that
nature has its own life that we need to take care of. So now that I am grown up, I always make sure
that I help the nature in my little own ways. Like using reusable straw, recyling plastics at home and
use it as a trashbag, and segregating our garbage. I am also an advocate of conserving electricity,
most especially if not in use and also teaching kids in the family to conserve the water, because every
drop counts.
4. Maka-bansa / maka-bayan
If you wan’t change for the
country, you need to start the change within yourself.

Personal development is significantly influenced by engaging in community activities that align with national and religious values. These involvements encourage individuals to adopt a broader perspective on societal needs and personal responsibilities. For instance, participating in initiatives that support local businesses strengthens national identity, while involvement in church activities fosters spiritual growth. Both avenues develop a sense of accountability and leadership, crucial for holistic personal growth, thereby aligning personal aspirations with broader community objectives and enhancing one's role as a proactive citizen .

Experiencing a childhood surrounded by nature-loving parents, with exposure to plants, trees, and a general awareness of environmental efforts, lays the foundation for a lifelong commitment to environmental advocacy. Such upbringing instills deep-seated values and awareness of the natural world’s importance, which prompts individuals to engage in everyday practices that prioritize environmental sustainability. This ongoing commitment is reflected in actions like recycling, conserving resources, and educating others, which all stem from formative childhood experiences .

Participation in religious seminars such as the Parish Renewal Experience (PREX) can profoundly impact an individual's perception of their faith and family dynamics. The seminar activities, which focus on the ways and words of God, can lead to a personal realization of one's blessings and a deeper appreciation for one's family. As described, this process helped the individual feel the grace of the Lord and recognize their unworthiness, enhancing their contentment with life and the value of family bonds experienced alongside loved ones .

Self-reflection is crucial in realizing and affirming one's values of kindness and humanity, especially amid challenges. By taking the time to reflect on personal actions and reactions to difficulties, individuals can understand the intrinsic value of maintaining humane, makatao principles. These reflections allow for an appreciation of the peace and quality of life achieved by adhering to such values, reinforcing the idea that being compassionate and considerate are ultimately more fulfilling, even when the world is unkind .

Maintaining cultural and religious practices in a multi-religious society presents challenges such as potential conflicts over differing beliefs, societal pressure to conform, and the risk of alienation. However, it also offers significant benefits, including richer cultural diversity, opportunities for interfaith dialogues, and enhanced mutual respect and understanding among different groups. These practices, as seen in participation in church activities like PREX seminars, can foster mutual appreciation and acceptance despite religious differences, thereby strengthening community bonds .

Adopting 'maka-bayan' practices has a significant positive impact on local economies and cultural preservation. By prioritizing the purchase of local products, citizens help boost domestic businesses, stimulate job creation, and reduce dependency on imported goods. This economic support contributes to the stability and growth of local industries. Moreover, it fosters cultural preservation by promoting traditional crafts and practices unique to the community, thereby maintaining a cultural heritage that can be passed down to future generations, enriching the societal fabric .

Supporting local products is a reflection of national pride as it shows a conscious effort to promote and sustain local industries, which in turn supports local farmers and producers. It is an expression of being 'maka-bayan' (patriotic), showcasing one's commitment to national economic growth and self-reliance. This practice not only strengthens the local economy but also fosters a sense of national identity and pride among citizens .

Personal habits such as using reusable items, recycling plastics, segregating garbage, conserving electricity, and teaching children about water conservation contribute significantly to environmental conservation. These habits, instilled from a young age by environmentally conscious parents, demonstrate how small individual actions can lead to broader environmental benefits. Encouraging these habits in communities can be achieved through education, community workshops, and by setting examples through community leaders or influencers who practice these habits .

Practicing 'maka-kalikasan' contributes significantly to sustainable living, as it involves conscious actions like recycling, conserving resources, and promoting environmental stewardship. This approach not only leads to a reduced ecological footprint but also encourages lifestyle changes that support sustainability. To instill these values in future generations, it is essential to lead by example, involve children in environmental activities, and educate them on the impact of their actions on nature, thereby fostering a culture of sustainability from a young age .

Upbringing plays a pivotal role in shaping an individual's inclination towards community welfare and kindness. Growing up in a humble environment, with parents who emphasized being considerate of others and helping those in need, profoundly influences one's behavior and values. This upbringing instills a natural predisposition to being 'makatao' (humane), leading to actions that prioritize the well-being of others and maintain a positive quality of life, even in a world that can sometimes be harsh .
