MODULE IN MATHEMATICS 6
THIRD QUARTER/ WEEK 3/ DAY 1

OBJECTIVE: Differentiates expression from equation.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

Numerical Expression is a mathematical sentence with a minimum of two numbers and at

least one math operation. The mathematics operation can be addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division.

Examples:4 + 7 9–6 3x5 15 ÷ 5

Algebraic Expression is mathematical phrase that uses variables, numerals, and operation
symbols.

Examples: 2n + 6 x–5 2n 4x ÷ 3

Variable is any letter or symbol that represents a number.

Constant has a fixed value that does not change.

Equation is a mathematical statement indicating that the two algebraic expressions are equal;
uses the symbol “=”

Examples:10n + 6 = 56 2 (N + 6) = 22 7x10 =70100/5 = 20

Differences between expression and equation.

1. Expressions are incomplete mathematical phrases whereas equations are complete

mathematical statements.
2. Expressions are like the typical English phrase whereas equations are complete sentences.
3. Equations show relationships whereas expressions don’t show any.
4. Equations have an equal sign whereas expressions don’t have any.
5. Equations are to be solved while expressions are to be simplified.
6. Equations have a solution while expressions don’t have any.

LET’S TRY THESE!

Presentation 1

What is the difference between 10 + 5 and 10 + 5 = 15?

10 + 5 is called numerical expression. An expression consists of a number or a

combination of numbers joined by operation symbols. An expression does not have an equal
sign.
10 + 5 = 15 is called an equation. The left side of an equation equals the right side.

Expression Equation
4x + 9 4x + 9 = 25
3x + 4y + 6 3x + 4y + 6 = 20
9z + 8 9z + 8 = 26
4 (x + 6) 4 (x + 6) = 32

This set of expressions are called algebraic expressions.

4x + 9 x, y, and z are the variables in the expression and the
numerals given are the constant.
3x + 4y + 6
9z + 8
4 (x + 6)

This set is called equation. The mathematical statement that

has two expressions separated by an equal sign. The
expression on the left side of the equal sign has the same
value as the expression on the right side
4x + 9 = 25
3x + 4y + 6 = 20
9z + 8 = 26
4 (x + 6) = 32

Translate into algebraic equation: The sum of a number and nine is fifteen.

Let a be the number. We have:

the sum of a number and nine is fifteen

a+9 = 15

and twenty-one, the sum is one hundred.
Let b be the number. We have:

the difference of a number and twenty-one plus twelve is one hundred

b–21 + 12 = 100

Algebraic equation: b– 21 + 12 = 100 or (b– 21) + 12 = 100

b. (n x 11) - 90 = 45 d. (n x 11) 90= 45

Before you proceed to the next activity, REMEMBER that:

Algebraic Equation is mathematical sentence with an equal sign (=) which shows
that two expressions on either side are equal.

Common words translated as “=” are equals, is, are, were, was, is equal to, and
result is.

Continue with your final activity. Enjoy and happy working!

MODULE IN MATHEMATICS 6
THIRD QUARTER/ WEEK 3/ DAY 5

Objective: Gives the translation of letters or symbols into real-life equations.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

 A variable is any letter or symbol that represents a number.

 A constant has a fixed value that does not change.
 An algebraic expression is a mathematical phrase that uses variables, numerals, and operation
symbols.

TRY TO DISCOVER!

Nancy received Php2000 from her godmother. She shared an amount to her little brother. She used the
remaining amount to buy books and school supplies worth Php1500. How much did she give to her bother?

a. Answer the following questions:

Who received money from the godmother? _____________________________________________

How much money was received? _____________________________________________________

How much money is given to the little brother? ____________________________________________

Why do you think the godmother gave money to the godchild? ________________________________

What trait is shown by the godchild? ____________________Why? ________________________

b. Analyzing the problem:

What is the variable in the problem? _____________ What is constant? ________________

What is the word clue? _______________________

What is the operation to be used to solve the problem? _________________

c. Translate:
Let N the amount of money Nancy gave to her brother.

Example Number 2:

Nerie has candies. Nelwen has 3 more candies than Nerie, while Noime has 7 fewer candies than
Nelwen. They have 60 candies in all. How many candies does each child have?

Solution Number 1;

Let C the number of candies Nerie have.

Nerie: C

Nelwen; C + 3

Noime: (C + 3) – 7

Solution Number 2:

Nerie: 60 – (C +3) + [(C + 3) – 7] = C

Nelwen: 60 – C + [(C + 3) – 7] = C + 3

Noime: 60 – C + (C + 3) = (C + 3) – 7

Example Number 3:

Nelson is m years old now.

a. How old is he 17 years from now? m + 17

b. How old is he 6 years ago? m–6

c. How old is his brother if he is 4 years older than him? m–4
