Protecting Languages and Biodiversity

The document discusses how language is an important part of culture and there are roughly 7000 languages globally but 30% are expected to disappear. It explains that the language one speaks influences how they perceive and interact with the world, and that both cultural and environmental biodiversity are important because cultures co-evolve with their environments. Globalization is also causing languages to decrease as more opportunities for connection across different people means less need for separate languages.

Language is one of the most important parts of any culture. It is the way by which people communicate
with one another, build relationships, and create a sense of community. There are roughly 7000
languages on the planet but 30% of it are expected to disappear. According to Edward Sapir "The
language a person speaks influences the way the world is perceived and interacted with". And
biodiversity is important both in nature and in culture because human cultures co-evolve with their
environment and it is the key indicator of the health of an ecosystem.

The language of a person depends on their environment. The loss of a language without ever being
recorded or heard by most people is a huge loss, in that it means the loss of a unique culture,
knowledge, and so many things. Language is the foundation of a culture but are now under threat of
disappearing. It is critical to not leave any language behind. But indigenous languages is essential for
ensuring the continuation and transmission of culture and history but it is also important to address
biodiversity loss.

Globalization causes decrease in language. As more opportunities of connection develop to bridge

different people together, the less language they need. It is evolving, and as such it's pushing out less
evolved languages. "Each time a language dies, another flames goes out, another sound goes silent"-
Ariel Sabar.
Language is not simply a set of words that are used for people to communicate. It is the vehicle by which
human beings express their thoughts and values. Every country would take an interest to their language
because it's culture. Transmission of languages, bilingual schooling and interest in cultural heritage
would help communities retain linguistic diversity. But the medicinal aspect was just one of many
reasons to promote the conservation and diversity of languages in the world. And it is important to
promote or preserve languages as they are responsible for the development of culture of the
environment.
