Individual Reflection
2/2

The argument our group made on writing using technology is that it is a positive tool for

students, teachers, and researchers. Specifically, we argued that artificial intelligence can affect

writing in a good way. There are many different applications and websites that assist and

improve writing, like Chat GPT, Grammarly, Scrivener, ProWritingAid, and Hemingway. When

used in the correct context, these can be strictly beneficial.

The audience we chose is anyone that writes using technology, either for or against it.

This affects teachers creating lesson plans, students tasked with essays, and any professional that

writes and uses technology regularly. Having more knowledge about artificial intelligence can

change one’s mind on the topic, so that is why this is the audience we picked.

I enjoyed learning about the different forms of artificial intelligence related to different

fields of study. Since most fields incorporate some sort of writing, all students can benefit from

learning this information. Specifically, I enjoyed learning about latent prints and how artificial

intelligence can help create samples. I also liked reading and informing about the article “Pencils

to Pixels” that highlighted how writing has evolved into many forms.

The genre we chose for our audience was presentation style, with equal parts text and

pictures. As a group, we decided on this because it is the most effective way to inform people

about something. Having too much or too little writing information on a slide won’t get the point

across.

This project was different from my individual focus on writing and technologies in my

individual research journal entries because it included the knowledge and opinions of three

people other than myself. We all had to be open and hear each other's ideas, which worked well,

1
though sometimes in groups it can be difficult. We were mostly on the same page about

everything, and the things we weren’t, we compromised.

The skills I developed further were communication. Since we didn’t meet in person

outside of class, we had to email each other. The knowledge I developed was related to artificial

intelligence, of course, but more specifically, about the different uses for it. I have never

intentionally used AI, other than Grammarly. Now that I have obtained knowledge and more

understanding, I will see it as an option for future writing assignments.

I learned from the class assigned readings, outside resources, and student responses.

From class assignments, I learned from Kevin Kelly’s TED Talk that technology is many forms

that one can even define. It’s a broader topic that I normally think about, and something that

seemed so revolutionary years ago is “old news,” just like what we view today to be highly

technologically, in 50 years it will be viewed so differently. The student responses in our class

mainly supported the use of artificial intelligence while writing, and a few disagreed. I learned

that most people have used AI in some form or another, whether it was academically or for

outside purposes. This relates to the WRT 205 Unit 1 Outcomes “Research Writing as Situated

Process” because in every research paper, there is a process one takes, one of those being the

actual research part. I learned how AI can be used in this step in the process, without

plagiarizing. For the outcome “Researching and Evaluating Sources Rhetorically,” it needs to be

realized that AI doesn’t create the information that people find. It searches through the internet

and produces the best answer it can find. During research, I learned you need to find the source

the information is derived from, which AI can also provide. The knowledge I gained through this

assignment will be helpful in the future, whether it’s research or creative writing.

Common questions

Powered by AI

Integration of AI tools in writing promotes the development of critical skills beyond writing itself, including digital literacy, critical thinking, and technological adaptability. Users learn to navigate and critically evaluate AI-generated content, fostering an understanding of its functionalities and limitations. Additionally, the process encourages adaptability to new technological trends and problem-solving skills as students learn to use these tools strategically to enhance their work. These skills are vital in leveraging AI effectively while maintaining the quality and originality of their academic and professional outputs .

The process of compromise in group work leads to a deeper understanding of writing technologies as it encourages open dialogue and the sharing of distinct viewpoints. It compels group members to reconcile differing opinions and synthesize information from multiple perspectives, resulting in a more nuanced comprehension of available technological tools. This environment of negotiation promotes an appreciation of diverse approaches and solutions, fostering critical evaluation and selection of the most effective writing technologies for each context .

The concept of 'old news' technology reflects the rapid pace of technological advancement and changing perceptions of AI's role in writing over time. Technologies once considered revolutionary become standard or outdated as new innovations emerge. In writing, this means that tools deemed cutting-edge are quickly replaced or enhanced by more sophisticated applications. As technology evolves, perceptions shift, leading writers and researchers to continually adapt to new tools and methods. This progression underscores the necessity for ongoing learning and flexibility, as writers must integrate the latest AI technologies to remain effective and relevant .

Presentation style projects foster a more engaging and comprehensive learning experience by combining visual aids with information. They allow for the synthesis of complex ideas into digestible pieces, making it easier to grasp how AI transforms writing. Involving visual and textual elements can cater to different learning styles among students, enhancing understanding and retention. This method effectively contextualizes AI's role, allowing learners to visualize the impact of AI tools in real scenarios .

The evolution of writing technology from 'Pencils to Pixels' impacts research writing by transforming how information is collected, curated, and presented. Traditional methods required extensive manual effort for sourcing and transcribing information, while digital tools streamline these tasks. Modern writing technologies offer collaborative platforms and AI-driven tools that enhance research efficiency and accuracy. This shift allows for more time to be dedicated to analyzing and interpreting data instead of merely collecting it, thus enriching the research process .

Artificial intelligence tools such as Grammarly and ProWritingAid assist students in refining their writing by providing grammar correction, style suggestions, and writing clarity improvements. This technological aid fosters better writing habits and enhances overall writing quality. These tools support writers by identifying errors and suggesting alternatives, thus enabling learners to improve their writing skills synthetically rather than relying solely on instruction. With accurate feedback, students gain self-reliance and attention to detailed aspects of writing that they might overlook .

Collaboration in a group project setting fosters a diversity of perspectives on writing with technology, as group members share individual experiences and insights. This collaborative environment encourages the exchange of ideas, which can broaden understanding and appreciation for various technological tools. Group dynamics may lead to the discovery of different tools or strategies that members were previously unaware of, influencing members to adopt new technologies in their writing processes. Moreover, compromise and communication skills are enhanced, allowing members to reconcile different viewpoints and reach a consensus on the best technological approaches for writing tasks .

Understanding AI's process of delivering information can significantly enhance future research and academic writing by improving search efficiency and data verification. AI provides a mechanism for quickly accessing a wide array of resources, analyzing them for relevance, and sourcing original content. Knowing how AI operates allows researchers to better judge the reliability and origin of the information they retrieve, facilitating more accurate and thorough academic work and enabling a stronger foundation for creative and research writing .

The varied reception of AI tools among students implies that teaching practices must be adaptive to include digital literacy and critical thinking as essential components. Educators are tasked with balancing traditional writing instruction with training on using AI responsibly. Lessons must address both technological advantages and the necessity of maintaining academic integrity. This involves guiding students in critically assessing AI-generated content and understanding its limitations. By doing so, educators can better prepare students for a future where technology and conventional skills coexist .

Challenges of relying too heavily on AI tools in educational writing include an increased risk of becoming overly dependent on technology for basic writing functions, thereby impairing the development of foundational writing skills. There is also a concern that AI might encourage academic laziness, where students might choose to rely on AI's capabilities instead of actively engaging with learning material. Furthermore, critiques often cite risks related to originality and the potential for AI to inadvertently promote plagiarism if students use these tools without understanding paraphrasing and intellectual property .
