D. Lesson Proper WHAT IS A LITERARY DEVICE?
A literary device is essentially a technique used by a writer
which adds substance or effect to the text they are writing.
WHY DO WRITERS USE LITERARY DEVICES?
A literary device is used to paint a picture for the reader.
To assist the reader in going a deeper understanding of what is
being said in the writing.
To emphasize a point or to make it clearer.
To convey a message in a more creative manner.
To make a text much more appealing and interesting to the reader.
Literary devices are excellent ways for writers to make their readers
connect with the character within a story in a much more profound level
and they can create a deeper meaning to these characters and their
situations.
COMMON LITERARY DEVICES USED BY WRITERS
Simile
A comparison of two dissimilar things using the words like or as.
Examples:
He was as high as a bike.
The siblings fight like cat and dog.
The way she moves is like a full- on rainstorm.
Metaphor
a comparison of two dissimilar things that does not use
like or as.
Examples:
She has a heart of stone.
He was a statue, waiting to hear the news.
Alliteration
Repetition of the initial consonant letter or sound in two or more
words in a line of a verse.
Examples:
She s sea shells by the sea shore.
Big bears bowl brashly through the bush.
Atmosphere
The overall emotional feeling created by the details the author
uses; atmosphere is created by descriptions of settings, characters,
and events.
Example:
"The war is like "a fierce storm which even good King Christian
was powerless to stop. Soon, Nazi soldiers gather in dark clouds at
the Danish border. "

In this example the description creates an atmosphere of fear and terror.
Flashback
An interruption of present action to insert an incident that took
place in the past.
Foreshadowing
Hints or clues about what will occur later in the narrative.
Example:
The Cat foreshadows trouble to come: "Yowe! Whiskers warned"

Hyperbole
An exaggerated statement used to increase or heighten effect.
Examples:
My dad was so hungry that he could have eaten a horse.
Imagery
Concrete details that appeal to the senses of sight, sound, touch,
smell, and taste or internal feelings.
Examples:
The smell reminded him of rotten tomatoes.
The tree bark was rough against her skin.
Onomatopoeia
A word that imitates the sound associated with its object or action.
Examples:
The gun shot, bang!
The snakes were hissing.
Personification
Human characteristics are given to nonhuman objects.
Examples:
The cat laughed.
The newspaper headline glared at me.
E. Enrichment Task. 2
Pictures with statements or sentences that used literary devices will be
flashed on the board. The students will identify the literary devices used in
the following statements/ selections:
In Mabel Dancing by Amy Hest, Mabel observes her

Activity sheets with literary selections will be distributed to the students.
They will be tasked to color the simile, metaphor, alliteration, atmosphere,
flashback, foreshadowing, hyperbole, imagery, onomatopoeia, and
personification; red, yellow, blue, green, orange, purple, pink, yellow green,
brown, and sky blue respectively.
The students will be divided into five groups and shall perform the activity
below.
Task 4. Paper and Pen.
Write a paragraph about being in the scenarios given using the literary
devices. Present your output in the class.
Group 1: Write about being stuck in the desert using hyperbole.
F. Post Activity
Group 2: You are on a rollercoaster and is starting to feel very sick.
Describe this experience using at least 3 similes.
Group 3: Write a paragraph about someone addicted to a video game. Use
at least 3 metaphors.
Group 4: Describe your shoe's personality, appearance, aspirations, etc. as if
they were alive. Write form the shoes perspective.
Group 5: Write a paragraph describing a dragon using alliteration as your
main device.
The teacher will recall and generalize the topic. The students will be asked

For final evaluation, the students will be tasked to create a sort literary
piece using literary devices.
