Annotated Bibliography Reflection

When completing this assignment, I gained new knowledge that I was previously

unfamiliar with. Most notably, I learned how to write an annotated bibliography. This entailed

understanding the structure and purpose of annotations, which serve as concise summaries,

evaluations, and reflections on the applicability of one’s own research of each source. I

discovered the importance of organizing these annotations clearly, ensuring that each provided

critical insights into the source material’s relevance, accuracy, and quality. Additionally, I further

informed myself of the MLA citation format. Prior to this assignment, I had limited experience

with citing in MLA style since I would usually just copy-paste the citations provided in the

websites where I would get my sources, but through the process of completing this assignment, I

learned how to accurately and manually cite sources, paying close attention to details such as

what type of titles should be italicized or in quotation marks, and what other components of a

citation should go in italics. This meticulous attention to proper citation conventions is vital for

my academic integrity. One specific aspect that was new to me in this assignment was the

requirement to seek out and utilize peer-reviewed articles. This particular requirement was new

to me because I was used to using whichever sources I would find on the internet, and most of

the time, these sources were too general to be fully reliable. For instance, when investigating the

psychological effects of abortion for this assignment, in the past, I might have included articles

from various types of publications without a thorough vetting process. However, this assignment

required me to delve into academic journals and databases to select articles that had undergone

the peer-review process. As a result, the sources I annotated were backed by well-founded

research, providing a solid foundation for my own scholarly analysis. In summary, I now realize

that using peer-reviewed publications is necessary since they undergo extensive evaluation by

subject matter experts before publication, guaranteeing a degree of scholarly legitimacy and

dependability that is crucial for academic work. The skills I gained in this assignment extend

beyond the applicability of an English course and are applicable across other various academic

courses. For instance, in History, critically analyzing primary and secondary sources will be

crucial for assignments where I have to construct well-informed arguments about historical

events. Similarly, when writing research papers in Biology, the skill of synthesizing research

findings from multiple studies can help me develop a comprehensive understanding of complex

biological processes. By applying the practices of organized annotations and accurate citations, I

can enhance the quality and credibility of my work in both of these subjects, contributing to my

overall academic growth.

The ability to analyze visual elements such as charts, graphs, and images significantly

improved my writing because it allowed me to provide deeper comprehension, emotional

resonance, and clear evidence to support my argument. By analyzing these elements I was able to

understand better the information being presented to me because it allowed me to interpret the

data in a visual way and, therefore better explain the information to my audience. Overall,

analyzing visual elements in this assignment will help me when writing future research papers

for my Biology classes. With this new skill, I will be able to provide a different form of data that

can further clarify in my audience when presenting my findings.

Based on the comments that I received from the readers of my annotated bibliography

during the peer-review workshop, I learned that a writing strength that I possess is my ability to

clearly express my thoughts and ideas. This ability guarantees that the main points and

arguments I provide are understandable to my audience. However, this skill is sometimes

overshadowed by my tendency to forget to explain some terms, which can lead to

misunderstandings among my audience. Recognizing this, I have consciously worked on this

throughout my college career, and I am pleased to acknowledge a marked improvement. I have

greatly improved my ability to craft well-structured arguments that are not only logical but also

provide comprehensive insights to my readers. By meticulously defining difficult terminology

and ensuring that every term is accessible to my audience, I have managed to enhance the overall

readability of my writing. These improvements in my writing are shown in my recent

assignments, where the coherent presentation of complex topics is complemented by careful

clarification of each term, allowing for a more seamless and understandable reading experience.

In addition, based on the comments that my professor left on my annotated bibliography. In my

next essay, I will make an effort to use sentences that get to the point without needless

elaboration. By doing so, I will eliminate superfluous words and maintain it to be the main idea.

Furthermore, I will take steps to remove extraneous clauses that do not add to the reader's

understanding of the topic. On the other hand I will not change the core principles of good

writing, such as the use of proper grammar and the structure of arguments. I will continue to use

grammatical constructs effectively to ensure my essay flows logically and is easily understood.

The quality of the arguments, evidence, and examples provided to support my arguments will

also remain at a high standard, as these are crucial elements of effective writing that do not

detract from clarity when used appropriately. All in all, I think that the comments on my next

essay will relate to maintaining grammatical integrity and logical structure while displaying a

marked improvement in conciseness.

The most challenging aspect of this assignment was figuring out the exact guidelines for

writing an annotated bibliography. At first, I had trouble deciding which information should be

included in the annotations and how to evaluate each source properly. In order to solve this

problem, I decided to use the resources provided on TAMIU’s ACE website where I found a

document that included an explanation of the components of an annotated bibliography and an

example. Furthermore, as I worked through the assignment, I came to see how crucial it was to

precisely summarize each source and evaluate its applicability to my research. On the other hand,

the least challenging aspect of this assignment was writing the annotations once I understood the

key components. I found that breaking down the annotation into specific elements gave me a

clear structure to follow. So I broke it down to first giving a brief summary by stating the study's

purpose, identifying its methodology, and outlining the finding, then evaluating the source, and

stating how it will help me in research.

This assignment changed my writing style to become more like a researcher's. Before

starting this project, most of my writing was based on my own ideas and conclusions. My

experience in previous courses like English 1301 strengthened this approach because I had to

write mostly analysis essays that highlighted the meaning behind the choices author's used in

writing their pieces, individual points of view and personal narratives. However, in this

assignment I had to write from the perspective of a researcher, which required a major mental

adjustment, I had to engage in research, acquire evidence, and deliver findings on the

psychological impacts of abortion. I was no longer allowed to depend entirely on my

interpretations of a work. I needed to become acquainted with various research techniques in

order to comprehend the dependability and context of the results I was evaluating.
