Methodology of Health Study in Ghana
Specific participant selection is crucial to adequately address the research questions and obtain relevant insights. It was achieved through a cross-sectional, random selection of student nurses actively engaged in clinical studies. This method ensures that participants have relevant experiences and insights, enhancing the study's relevance in understanding attitudes towards disabilities within the healthcare sector .
Questionnaires were used as the data collection tool because they facilitate systematic gathering of standardized data from a defined sample, which is necessary for statistical analysis and generalization within the case context. The structured items of the questionnaire helped in assessing respondents' perceptions and attitudes .
Purposive sampling technique was employed to select the hospitals because they are government hospitals that are mostly attended by people with disabilities (PWDs) in the municipality. This method ensures that the selected hospitals and respondents can provide the information required to answer the research question effectively .
A case study design was chosen because it allows for a comprehensive and in-depth examination of a specific issue within its real-world context, which aligns with the need to explore certain research questions holistically. This approach ensures that various facets and nuances are considered, which might be overlooked by broader methodologies .
The pilot study at Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital highlights the importance of piloting as it helps ensure that the research instruments are understandable, and crucial adjustments can be made based on participant feedback. This process is vital in refining questions to improve clarity and relevance, thus enhancing the reliability and validity of the subsequent data collection process .
The socio-demographic factors considered were gender, age, qualification, and area of residence. These factors are relevant to understanding the diversity of perceptions and attitudes towards people with disabilities, aligning with the study's goal to examine holistic interactions within healthcare settings .
The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was employed to analyze the data because it allows for cross tabulations to identify relationships among variables, measure these relationships, and compare differences in terms of profession. The use of tables for frequency analysis aids in organizing and visualizing the data comprehensively .
To ensure validity, the research instruments were examined and reviewed by the researcher's supervisor before implementation. Additionally, the instruments were piloted with a few health workers to 'fine-tune' them, ensuring respondents could understand the questions. Feedback from this pilot was used to make necessary adjustments to the final questionnaire .
The researchers ensured ethical conduct by obtaining ethical clearance from Nursing and Midwifery Training College - Sekondi's research committee and all four hospitals involved. They assured privacy and confidentiality of the respondents, informed them about the study's aims, potential benefits, risks, and respected their right to withdraw at any time. Identities or personal data were not revealed in the final report .
The research setting, situated in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis with a vibrant, ethnically diverse population, influenced the study by providing a rich contextual background that reflects the interactions of various socio-cultural and economic factors. The selection of this metropolis allowed the study to explore issues relevant to specific local healthcare settings and services, particularly concerning disability and healthcare access .
