Part II: Encounter with Arts
Kundiman is a classic Filipino love song genre whose lyrics are composed in Tagalog. The
melody is distinguished by its smooth, flowing, and soft beat with dramatic intervals. Kundiman
was the customary way to serenade in the Philippines.“Panliligaw” is a Filipino tradition that has
always been present throughout the years, it is a traditional way of courting. Harana is a
traditional Filipino serenade that involves a man expressing his sincere feelings to a woman
through music as a part of "Panliligaw". Harana originated during the Spanish colonial period in
the Philippines and is influenced by Spanish songs. In a traditional harana, a guy brings a guitar
and serenades the woman he is pursuing with kundiman-themed songs outside of her house to
express his love and appreciation for the woman he wants to pursue. Kundiman typically has
sincere lyrics that express feelings of love, desire, and appreciation. Harana tradition has
transformed throughout time and, although less common in modern urban environments, it
remains prominent in rural regions and cultural gatherings. The music and lyrics of Kundiman
reflect the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines. First off, kundiman has this emotional vibe
that hits you right in the feels. The melodies and lyrics are designed to make you feel all sorts of
things from butterflies in your stomach to that heartache vibe. It's like the music version of a
romantic movie scene. Kundiman is considered an auditory artwork because it's not just about
the words; it's also about the way the music and singing style come together. The melodies are
crafted to tug at your heartstrings, and the singers, with their soulful voices, add this emotional
punch to the whole experience. My aesthetic experience with the said artwork is growing up I
got no choice but to listen to my Dad’s playlist all the time, these songs include old Filipino love
songs that I used to hate because growing up I used to think that listening to this genre is kinda
“baduy” but as I grew older I find myself listening and creating a playlist that includes the songs
my dad used to play before and ended up loving them as much as he does. Now for our group

chosen inspired artwork, the group came up with an idea to incorporate Filipino tradition and
culture. For our artwork, it is a fashion show showcasing traditional Filipino clothing. As we walk
down the fashion runway there is kundiman music playing at the back while we introduce our
work. As the roleplay unfolds, we transport the audience back to an era when panliligaw, or
traditional courting, was an art form. We highlight the fundamental principles of love and
community through this creative performance. Courtship symbolizes the deep relationships that
connect communities, showcasing the interconnection and shared traditions that characterize
Filipino culture. In this experience, as we gracefully showcase the intricate details of traditional
Filipino clothing on the fashion runway, the enchanting music of Kundiman provides a nostalgic
backdrop, echoing the sentiments of love and courtship from times past. Incorporating these
hallmarks of love and community into our fashion show, we aim to not only showcase the
beauty of traditional Filipino attire but also to weave a narrative that resonates with the audience
on a deeper level.
