Why Body Language?

- more than half (51%) of employers say that they know within the First 5 minutes of an interview if a candidate is a good fit for a
position
- David G. Jensen (2004): Judgments made in the first 20 seconds of an interview could predict the outcome of the interview
- it can reveal how a candidate really is feeling at a moment.
- isn’t easy, and it has its own limitations
- complementary skill, not a substitute for listening to them.

2- Interpret candidate’s gestures in context


 Do not ignore the context of the situation

 Sometimes gestures and postures can occur because of conditional reasons such as air temperature or excessive room light or …

 Always be aware of this conditional reasons and try to make a suitable situation for interview

3- Look for congruence


 Candidate gives good answers to your questions, but your instinct tells something is wrong to that!

 you unconsciously noticed the difference between what candidate is saying verbally and what his body is showing

 trust your intuition


4- Pay attention to the sequence
 pay attention to the sequence of the verbal statements and body gestures

 If the answer is genuine, the body will show it first and the verbal response will follow. If the reverse happens, it can be a sign of
insincerity

 keep in the mind their cultural background

 Some cultures may tend to be more reserved, less direct with gestures and keep a wider interpersonal distance than other cultures.

 It doesn’t necessarily mean that they are less excited about the job.

 pay more attention to the body language of the candidates you are considering for the roles such as PR, sales, etc. because these jobs
require excellent communication skills
Tips and tricks for reading candidate’s body language

• ask him neutral questions to identify his body language reactions
• get them out of the interviewing room and introduce him to team members

Your body sends signals as well, beware!

- they can unconsciously pick many different signals from your body and

- Use positive body language to relax them and open up

• Remove the barriers

• Uncross your arms and legs

• Reveal the palms of your hands
