SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS
Common Orthopedic Surgery Instruments:
1. Lowman Bone Clamp
-Lowman bone clamp is a highly versatile instrument that can be
used in a variety of way to handle bone. not only can it be used to
grasp bone and align it in fractures and other such breaks but also
it can be used to compress bone.
2. Kern-lane Bone Clamp
-The Kern Bone Holding Forceps is a specialized
orthopedic device that surgeons commonly use for
grasping and mobilizing fractured bone pieces, in order to
align them into the anatomical stabilization spot.
3. Verbrugger Bone Clamp
-Verbrugge Bone Holding Forceps feature a strong and
robust structure which is ideal for the manipulation of
bones and bony tissue. This self-centering instrument
securely holds the bone during multiple orthopedic
procedures.
4. Bone Rongeurs Forceps
-Bone Rongeurs are surgical instruments used to trim, contour and remove bone after
teeth extractions. Rongeurs have a spring mechanism between the handles and a
sharpened working end. A rongeur is heavy-duty instrument with a sharp-edged,
scoop-shaped tip, used for gouging out bone.
5. Periosteal Elavators
-Periosteal elevators are mainly used to lift full
thickness soft tissue flaps. The tips require protection
and need to be kept very sharp otherwise shredding of
the flap can happen.
6. Bone Curette
-The bone curette may be used to collect a
bone sample for a biopsy, to determine the
health of the bone in certain areas of the jaw
or to prepare the bone for dental implant
placement.
7. Cobb’s Raspatory
-Used by orthopedic surgeons to dissect or separate
hard tissue like periosteum from long bones prior to
reduction and fixation of fractures. It is also used to
retract tissue in confined spaces.
8. Bone Mallet
-The Bone Mallet is a special hammer for forensic and
post-mortem work. Often used to tap bone chisels to
apply the necessary force. The hook at the end of the
handle can be used to separate the calvarium from the
bottom section of the skull when accessing the brain.
9. Pin Cutter
-The Pin Cutters are commonly used in orthopedic procedures to fix bone issues. The
body of the instruments is made of 100% stainless material.
10. Wire Cutter
-Surgical wire cutters are specialized surgical
instruments used in Orthopaedic surgeries to cut
wires, pins, and other materials used to stabilize
bones. These instruments are designed to be extremely
precise and allow surgeons to make clean cuts without
damaging surrounding tissues.
11. Weitlaner Retractors
-Weitlaner Retractor is a self-retaining retractor. It
is used in herniotomy, saphenous vein graft, plastic
surgery, orthopedic procedures, femoropopliteal
bypass, and mastoid surgery. It offers a high degree
of precision and flexibility while conducting the
clinical procedure.
12. Orthopedic Pins
-Pins are used to correct soft tissue damage and
minimal bone fractures. The purpose of pins is that it
provides provisional internal fixation so that it can
be manipulated by further hardware use and
inaccurate permanent fixation is avoided.
13. Orthopedic Plates
-An orthopedic plate is a form of internal fixation
used in orthopedic surgery to hold fractures in place
to allow bone healing and to reduce the possibility of
nonunion.
14. External Fixtator
-An external fixation device may be used to keep
fractured bones stabilized and in alignment. The
device can be adjusted externally to ensure the bones
remain in an optimal position during the healing process. This device is commonly
used in children and when the skin over the fracture has been damaged.
Common General Surgery Instruments:
1. Debakey Forceps
-The Debakey Vascular Tissue Forceps are used for
holding and manipulating delicate tissues, especially
in cardiovascular procedures. Generally, these tissue
forceps play a vital role in accessing the thick tissue in
small spaces where fingers couldn't serve.
2. Right Angle or Mixter Forceps
-used to control bleeding from the blood vessels.
Overall instrument length is 5 1/4" and features a
delicate pattern along with Half Serrated jaws that
are slightly curved. Mixter Hemostatic Forceps are
used to control bleeding from the blood vessels.
3. Intestinal Clamps (Straight & Curved)
- used to manipulate and grasp the intestinal tissues during surgical procedures. It
is also used to clamp the rectum and stomach during surgery to maintain adequate
hemostasis.

4.
Ochsner Clamps (Straight & Curved)
-Ochsner Forceps are hemostats that are helpful for clamping off blood vessels to
avoid bleeding during procedures such as orthopedic surgery. In order to clamp
vessels or grasp tissue, these forceps have 1x2 teeth on the tip of the serrated jaws.

5. Mosquito Forceps (Straight & Curved)
-Mosquito Forceps are multipurpose surgery instruments made to handle the blood
vessels and prevent blood loss. Mosquito Forceps are used for handling blood
vessels and controlling bleeding during many surgical procedures.

6. Malleable Retractors
-Used to hold back tissues and organs during surgery.
They are suitable for abdominal, cardiovascular,
ophthalmic, and neurosurgical procedures. Their
malleable structure allows them to fit the form of the
area. They can also be used to retract intestines.
7. Deaver Retractors
-The Deaver Retractor is a large, handheld retractor
commonly used to hold back the abdominal wall
during abdominal or thoracic procedures. It may also be used to move or hold
organs away from the surgical site.
