Mixture Composition:
Overview of the composition of the mixture subjected to distillation, highlighting the components and their boiling
points.
- A 50:50 mixture of water (H2O) and isopropyl alcohol (C3H8O), with dye added to give the liquid a
pleasing colour. Since water boils at 100°C, while isopropyl alcohol has a boiling point of 82.5°C, alcohol
is the material that will evaporate. Since the dye is considerably more soluble in water than it is in
alcohol, the goal is to separate the alcohol from the water. As a result, the distillate should be clear,
leaving all of the colour in the water phase. This will provide tangible evidence that a separation has
occurred.
Preparations
1. Setting up the distillation apparatus
The first thing to do when setting the apparatus for distillation is putting the round bottom flask to the support
adaptor before placing it on the hot plate. Get the three-way adaptor and put it on the top of the flask making
sure the arm facing side to connect the thermometer through the thermometer adaptor. Then put the
thermometer that should be placed at a level a bit lower than your sidearm to get an accurate measurement of
the temperature of the vapor. Secure the flask by clamping It on its neck. Now, Connect the condenser to the arm
of the distillation flask. The condenser should have an inlet and outlet for water flow. Clamp the vacuum
adaptor and connect it to the condenser for support. Connect hoses to the water inlet and outlet of the
condenser. The water source helps cool and condenses the vapor. Attach the receiver flask which is the
graduated cylinder to the condenser’s outlet. This is where the distilled liquid will be collected. Ensure all joints
and connections are properly sealed using appropriate clamps. This prevents vapor from escaping and
maintains the efficiency of the distillation. We can use clips to further secure the clamps.
2. Measuring and Preparing the Mixture
In a 100 mL cylinder pour the isopropyl alcohol and water added with dye for a pleasing color. Pour it to
the 250 mL round bottom flask. When adding your solution to the round bottom flask, the liquid level should
be around halfway up the flask or lower, as we do not want any liquid to splatter up into the condenser.
3. Checking and ensuring the proper functioning of all components
Double-check that the equipment and apparatus are properly sealed. Check the temperature. Ensure all
connections, fittings, and seals are tight and secure. Observe the process clearly to make sure that it is correct.
Experimental Procedure
1. Heating and Vaporization (Vapor Travel through the Column)
- Before heating the solution, a few preparations were made. First, the solution was added to the
round bottom flask making sure that the level of the liquid solution is halfway up the flask or lower.
This is to prevent the liquid solution from splattering to the condenser. Next, a stirring rod was added
to the solution to evenly heat the mixture. A boiling chip was also added to the liquid solution to boil
the solution more calmly. The round bottom flask was then placed on the support bottom flask then it
was placed on the hot plate. The stirring function of the hotplate was then turned on at slow speed.
The heater was turned on to a medium level to get even heating bearing in mind that the discrepancy
in the boiling point between our two substance is not that high, therefore we must not result to high
level of heat to avoid boiling the 2 substances together. After a while the mixture starts boiling. This is
where vaporization starts. The vapor will rise up into the 3-way adaptor where it will start condensing.
Eventually, the vapor will start collecting at the top arm of the condenser. During vaporization we can
observe the vapor that made the round bottom flask look cloudy. It is also visible in the 3-way
condenser wherein the condensation is starting to take place. Also, we can observe that the amount of
the liquid solution has decreased which was expected. Also, the vapor and the condensed isopropyl
alcohol came out clear / colorless compared to the solution.
2. Condensation
- After the vapor is collected to the top arm condenser the vapor then travels through the condenser
where it starts to condense. Based on our observation, as the vapor travels through the condenser it
slowly turns into liquid distillate. The condensation or the change from vapor to liquid is caused by
the cold water found on the outside chamber of the condenser which cools down the vapor, turning it
into a liquid distillate. And this liquid distillate is then collected to the collection vessel.
3. Collection of Distillate
- Since the isopropyl alcohol has the lower boiling point compared to the water then it is expected that
distillates in the receiving end is the isopropyl alcohol. Base on the video, the solution is 50:50 of water
and isopropyl alcohol and the collection of distilled alcohol should not be stopped until it reaches the
exact amount of it (which is the amount of isopropyl alcohol inside the solution).
4. End of Distillation
- Distillation is all about separating liquid mixtures depending on their boiling point. The given solution is a
mixture of water and alcohol and these two liquids have different boiling point. Base on the video, the
substance with lower boiling point will be the one who will be distilled or what we call evaporate while the
higher boiling point will be stay in its form (with its wastes which is in this substance is the food coloring). As
the isopropyl alcohol reaches its boiling point it then stops increasing the temperature, but instead it starts to
evaporate. Its temperature didn’t change that much as it changes its phase. The steam then was turned into
liquid and start to condense where it passes through tube that’s tightly closed. After that, it is then collected
with its exact amount as what`s added to the heated mixture. Since the mixture is composed of 50% isopropyl
alcohol and 50% water, then the distilled alcohol collected after the process must exactly be 50% and for that
to happen the apparatus should always be tightly closed.
Q&A Section
1. What is the purpose of the distillation process?
The purpose of distillation in the context of mixtures is to separate the different components of the mixture
based on their different boiling points.
The mixture is heated until one of its components boils and turns into vapor. This vapor is then cooled and
condensed back into a liquid, which is collected separately. This process is repeated until all components are
separated. Distillation is the process of heating a liquid boiling point, vaporizing it, and then considering it
back into liquid to separate it from impurities and other solutes. It is a common technique used to separate
solutes.
2. How does the distillation apparatus work to achieve separation?
The distillation apparatus effectively separates mixtures by leveraging the different boiling points of each
component within the mixture. Here’s a step-by-step explanation of how it works:
Heating: The mixture is placed in a distillation flask and heated. This causes the component with the lowest
boiling point to start evaporating.
Vaporization: The vapors rise through the neck of the flask into a condenser. The component that vaporizes
first is the one with the lowest boiling point.
Condensation: The condenser, which is typically a long tube surrounded by a jacket of water to keep it cool,
cools the vapor back into a liquid form. This liquid is now more concentrated in the component with the lower
boiling point.
Collection: The condensed liquid, known as the distillate, is collected in a separate container.
Repetition: If the mixture contains more than two components, the process is repeated, each time collecting
the component with the next highest boiling point.
This process ensures that each component of the mixture is separated out, allowing for the collection of pure
substances
3. What factors influence the efficiency of the distillation process?
The more energy applied to the evaporation side, and at the same time removed from the condensation side,
the more efficient is the distillation. Furthermore, sufficient cooling as well as an appropriate and stable under
pressure are crucial for efficient distillation. Here are some factors that affects the efficiency of distillation
process:
Temperature: The distillation rate increases with increasing temperature because higher temperatures lead to
faster vaporization of the liquid.
Pressure: The distillation rate is also affected by the pressure under which the distillation is performed. Lower
pressure leads to a faster distillation rate, as the liquid’s boiling point decreases with decreasing pressure.
Surface area: The distillation rate is also influenced by the surface area of the liquid exposed to the air. A
larger surface area will lead to a faster evaporation rate and, thus, a faster distillation rate.
The volume of liquid: The volume of liquid being distilled affects the distillation rate, with larger volumes
taking longer to distill than smaller volumes.
Boiling point: The boiling point of the distilled liquid will also affect the distillation rate. Liquids with higher
boiling points will take longer to vaporize and distill than those with lower boiling points.
Existence of impurities: The presence of impurities in the liquid being distilled may also affect the distillation
rate, as impurities may change the boiling point of the liquid and require additional time to vaporize and
distill.
4. Why is it important to collect distillate in a separate flask?
For several reasons, the conical flask is the recommended tool for gathering distilled liquid. The conical shape
of the object facilitates simple swirling and mixing of the liquid, hence reducing the risk of bumps and
splashes during the distillation process. Furthermore, the flask’s short neck reduces evaporation and the
amount of distilled liquid lost. Lastly, the flask’s conical shape makes it simple to pour and transfer the liquid
that has accumulated. All things considered, these characteristics render the conical flask a useful and
effective option for gathering distilled water.

Conclusion
In conclusion, distillation is a popular and successful method for separating liquid components of a mixture
based on their boiling points. Because of its efficiency and low cost, this approach is widely used in chemical labs and
industrial settings. By carefully managing the temperature, one component may be vaporized while the other remains,
allowing pure liquids to be collected. Simple distillation needs specialized lab equipment such as a round bottom
flask, three-way adaptor, condenser, vacuum adaptor, thermometer adaptor, thermometer, and support adaptors with
clamps, among others. Tight sealing at all joints and efficient cooling of the condenser are critical aspects of
developing an effective distillation system. During the distillation process itself, meticulous monitoring of temperature
regulation should be observed through the use of suitable heating sources ensuring even heating within mixtures,
generally resulting in flawless experiments unless there is violent bubbling then controls need to be readjusting
without causing any undue hazards, particularly from flammable substances involved which could easily ignite if not
handled properly requiring protective gear throughout experimentation. Furthermore, data measurement protocols
used during these experimental procedures contribute significantly to accurate conclusions – essentially, collecting
volume measurements along with corresponding temperatures yields valuable information, culminating in informative
graphical analyses indicating successful separation outcomes.
