Infographic Analysis: Population Growth

The document analyzes an example infographic that relies on projected population growth information from the United Nations. It examines how the infographic establishes credibility through its sources, presents information logically through its use of color-coding and layered circles, and does not rely heavily on emotional appeals since the topic of world population growth is not very emotional.

Introduction
An infographic delivers information from a company or organization in a way that is visually
appealing and effective. Specifically, a technical
infographic communicates information that is
either usually detail-heavy or complex in a
simple way. Infographics are used in almost
every job field and for every topic. Because I’ve
previously done an analysis on this document
genre, I focus more on analyzing my example
infographic in this analysis.

Analysis
The purpose of this infographic is to rely
projected population growth based on
information from the United Nations. It uses the
circular graphics and color-coded numbers to
visually show the information to the viewer.

Ethos
The ethos of this infographic is in the sources
cited for the information. Near the bottom of the
infographic, in text that is clearly visible against the background, the infographic states its’
source as ‘Our World in Data.’ Above that, it also states that projections are based on
information from the United Nations. Because it uses well-known and respected institutions,
such as the United Nations, the infographic gains credibility in the eyes of the viewer.

Logos
The logos of this infographic is in how easy the information is presented in the visual form. The
color-coding of the numbers and circles create an easy visual narrative for the viewer to follow.
The layering of the circles also gives the viewer a reference for the size of the number its giving.
Those aspects create a logical pattern of visual information to follow.
Pathos
The pathos of this infographic isn’t prominent in the way the logos and ethos are. Because the
pathos is dependent on the type of information being presented, it can fluctuate in comparison
to the other two. For this example, the world’s projected population isn’t being presented as an
emotional topic. In response, this infographic doesn’t rely on pathos.

Evaluation
Because it’s a visual medium, the best way for the message to be conveyed is through
deliberate design choices. The example infographic mainly uses ethos and logos, through visual
means, to create a relationship with the viewer. I’ve created many infographics and things that
are adjacent to them. I like the creative aspect to them and find them easier to understand than
a chunk of text. I wouldn’t mind creating infographics.
