Halliburton Compression-Set Mechanical Hookwall PERMA-LACH Packer

The Halliburton Compression-Set Hookwall Packer is run in the well as an

integral part of the tubing string. It is designed to be set with 8,000- 15,000 lbs of
tubing weight set down on it. Once the packer is set, the production tubing may be
landed in compression, neutral weight or with tension applied. Retrieval is possible
by rotating the tubing to the right and picking up. The packer also features a
straight shear emergency release.
This packer has two sets of slips to bite into the casing above and below the
elements making it applicable to medium to high-pressure applications. The
packer is set by raising the workstring a small amount, rotating the tubing one third
turn to the right at the packer and slacking off the tubing weight on the packer. The
right-hand rotation un-jay's the lower drag block body with the assistance of
spring-loaded drag blocks contacting the casing wall. As the tubing is slacked off,
the bottom wedge moves down under the lower slips causing the slips to bite the
casing wall and begin to support the weight as it is slacked off. Further downward
movement deploys the elements out to the casing wall and moves a prop under
the top collet wedge. The internal seal moves over the sealing surface of the
packer mandrel to close the by-pass and the upper slips ride out over the top
collet wedge. The internal J-mandrel engages a set of J-pins to lock the packer in
the set position.

While running into the wellbore, the packer has an internal by-pass to prevent the
swabbing effects of fluid by-passing the outside of the packer elements which may
cause the elements to become damaged.

The lower set of slips prevents the packer from moving down the wellbore when
subjected to tubing compression and pressure differentials from above. The upper
set of slips prevents the packer from moving up the wellbore when subjected to
tubing tension and pressure differentials from below.

Since the packer features a straight shear emergency release, extra consideration
should be made as to the effects of thermal and pressure induced forces acting on
the tubing string during production or injection.

The packer is released by slacking off approximately 5000 lbs weight down on the
packer, applying one third turn to the right at the packer and raising the tubing
while holding the right-hand torque. The right-hand torque will disengage the J-
mandrel from the J-pins and the upward movement will pull the prop from under
the top collet wedge. The top collet wedge is then free to collapse inward to allow
the top slips to be pulled up easily. Further upward movement opens the by-pass,
allows the elements to retract and automatically latch the j-profile of the drag
block body.

The packer may be set, released and reset multiple times while in the well. There
are no shear pins or other expendable components in the packer which requires
replacing when releasing and resetting the packer without shearing the emergency
release pins.

Typical applications for the Halliburton Compression-Set Hookwall Packer include

medium to high-pressure wells with mild temperature and corrosive environments.
This packer is suitable for production, injection and rod pump installations. In
addition, service applications such as stimulation and tubing-conveyed
perforating operations may also be carried out using this packer.

A number of accessories may be used in conjunction with the Halliburton Compression-Set
Hookwall Packer such as landing nipples, tubing seal dividers travel joints, etc. These accessories
will provide means of plugging the tubing, disconnecting from the packer and compensating for
tubing movement.

Special Features
1. Low cost.

2. Applicable to moderate to high-pressure applications from above or below. Available for

10,000 psi in most sizes.

3. Simple design increases bore ID, eases operation, ensures dependability, etc.

4. No hydraulic hold down head which reduces potential leak paths.

5. Simple one third turn to the right and straight pick up of the tubing to release.

6. May be set, released and reset multiple times while in the hole.

7. Emergency straight shear release.

8. Three-piece, multi-durometer elements with anti-extrusion back ups in the end elements will
seal against casing irregularities and low pressure differentials.

9. Various element materials are available to meet high-temperature and corrosive

environments.

10. Opposing slip design provides significant mechanical advantage over single-piece slip
design to ensure the elements maintain sufficient set forces and the packer can withstand
high pressure differentials.

11. Internal by-pass reduces swabbing effect from pulling operations.

12. Tubing may be left in compression, neutral or tension.

13. Simple design with minimal redress requirements.

Running the Packer

1. Run the appropriate tubing tailpipe and make up the compression-set mechanical hookwall
packer to the top of the string.

2. Run the packer into the well slowly by installing tubing. Once at the proper depth, install the
surface wellhead tubing hanger and land the tubing in the wellhead. Calculate the pipe
stretch which will provide 8000-15,000 lbs weight down on the packer. Determine the
position to set the packer taking into account the packer's setting stroke, the necessary pipe
stretch to set the packer and the final mode of the tubing required when the wellhead is
installed (neutral, tension, etc.).

3. Position the packer downhole at the depth it will be set. Be sure the last movement of the
tubing is up the wellbore. Make a mark on the tubing string and rotate the tubing to the right
sufficiently to obtain a minimum of one third turn at the packer. Depending upon packer
depth, hole angle and pipe size, this could require two or three turns at the surface. While
holding the right-hand torque in the tubing, slowly slack the tubing off. The packer should

start taking weight after the tubing has been slacked off a distance equal to the packer
setting stroke. Continue slacking off weight until the 8000 to 15,000 lbs has been set down
on the packer. Test the annulus and bleed the test pressure to zero. Land the tubing in the
desired final position (compression, neutral, tension), remove the blowout preventors and
install the wellhead.

Pulling the Packer

1. With the wellhead removed and the blowout preventors installed, slack off approximately
5000 lbs weight down on the packer, apply one third turn to the right at the packer and raise
the tubing while holding the right-hand torque. It will require a minimum pick-up distance of
the pipe stretch plus packer setting stroke to relatch the drag block body J-latch which will
allow the packer to be moved down the wellbore.

2. A slight overpull may be necessary to move up the hole. If it is desirable to move down the
wellbore after the packer is released, and the automatic J-latch on the drag block body is not
engaging, a slight amount of left-hand rotation while moving the packer up the wellbore may
be necessary

One quarter turn to the Packer is held firmly in set
right sets, and there is position by an upper internal

Guiberson® G-6 Packer
Halliburton’s Guiberson® G-6 packer is a double-grip, retrievable,
single-string packer designed for service in water-flooding and
enhanced oil recovery. Because many of these wells are shallow,
the packer was designed to allow the packing elements
to be packed off with either tubing tension or compression
at the packer. The double-grip feature allows the option
of leaving tubing in compression or tension and makes the
packer suitable for use with accessories such as on-off tools, Case –Hardened
downhole shut-off valves, and other related completion tools. Upper Slips

• May be run with a variety of completion accessories.

Operation
Halliburton’s Guiberson® G-6 packer is set by lowering the tubing to the setting depth.
The tubing is picked up to allow for the setting stroke (8 in.) plus the desired tubing load.
One-quarter turn right-hand rotation of the tubing at the packer with set down motion
sets both slip systems. The packing elements can then be packed off with either
compression or tension at the packer.

The packer is retrieved by applying 1/4 turn right-hand rotation of the tubing at the
packer and picking up. Opening of the internal bypass valve allows pressure to
equalize across the packer. Continued upward movement will release the packer
and automatically re-J the tool into the running position. In the event that the tool
cannot be unset conventionally, a safety shear system is provided for emergency release.

Versa-Set® Packers
Halliburton's Versa-Set packer combines all the best high-performance
features of a mechanical-set retrievable packer with the ability to set on
wireline. When set on wireline, a standard XL on-off tool with integral
landing nipple profile is used for temporarily plugging at the top of the
packer while the production tubing is being run. Setting on wireline allows
lubricating into the wellbore without having to kill the well, which minimizes
damage to sensitive formations. It also provides for precise setting depth
control. Once the packer is set on wireline and the tubing string is engaged,
the packer can be released and retrieved in a half-trip—no retrieving tool
is required. The packer can even be moved and reset any number of times
before retrieving.

The Versa-Set packer can be easily converted at the wellsite to run

mechanically on tubing. Operation is with simple 1/4 turn for right-hand set
and release. The element package can be packed off in either compression
or tension. Heavy-duty J-lugs are capable of handling most treating
conditions and also provide emergency straight-pull release.

The Versa-Set packer provides a full opening for most tubing-casing

combinations and is available in pressure ratings up to 10,000 psi to meet
most well conditions. The packer can be trimmed for sour service applications.
