ports connected to the forward side of the propulsion drive
pump through the high pressure hoses.
The high pressure oil flow is divided equally between the
two rear wheel motors as the oil passes through the
forward flow divider spool within the Equa-Trac II valve. Oil
flow returns from the rear wheel motors at charge P0102118
pressure and passes through the reverse side of the FIG. 201
Equa-Trac II valve and back to the propulsion drive pump.
Case drain return oil flows from the rear wheel motors and
Equa-Trac II valve back to the hydraulic reservoir.
System ON - Reverse
FIG. 202: Oil flow in the reverse mode is similar to the oil
flow in the forward mode, except that the flow of oil in the
high pressure lines flows in the opposite direction.
High pressure oil is sent from the reverse side of the
hydrostatic pump to the reverse inlet port of the Equa-Trac
II valve. The oil then flows through the reverse flow divider
spool in the valve, and is divided equally between the rear
wheel motors.
Oil flow returns from the forward inlet ports of the rear
wheel motors at charge pressure and passes through the
forward side of the Equa-Trac II valve, and back to the 1
propulsion drive pump.

FIG. 270
FIG. 270: To start the drive cycle, hydraulic oil under high
system pressure is sent from the main hydrostatic pump
through the Equa-Trac II valve and then supplied equally
to the high pressure inlet passage (1) at both rear wheel
motors.
The oil flows through passage (2) in distributor (3) and to
passage (4) in cylinder block (5) which are partially
aligned, permitting oil to begin entering cylinder cavity (6)
behind piston (7).
The high pressure oil pushes the piston outward causing
roller (8) to make contact with cam lobe (9) just after the
highest point of the lobe. This contact causes the cylinder
block (5) to start rotating.

(5) are NOT in alignment with each other and the oil 4
supply is cut off. In this neutral position the piston does 2
not provide drive power to the cylinder block. But, the
piston and roller remains in contact with the cam surface. 3
In order to continue driving power, another piston must

D-8426
FIG. 273
FIG. 274
FIG. 275: Power Distribution (System Engaged)
The wheel motor contains ten pistons and eight cam
lobes for a total of 80 power strokes generated by the
pistons in one revolution of the cylinder block (which is
splined to the wheel shaft).
Each piston and roller moves up and down each of the
eight cam lobes generating a constant torque output with
a low noise level. With an even number of pistons and
cam lobes, the internal forces of the motor are balanced
permitting the motor bearings to be available to receive
high radial and axial loads.
To change the direction of wheel motor rotation, the input
supply of high pressure oil is sent through the reverse
high pressure ports of the Equa-Trac II valve. The high
pressure oil is sent through the distributor of the motor in D-8427a
the opposite direction of the forward rotation of the motor. FIG. 275
FIG. 276: Power Distribution (System Disengaged)
When the power rear axle is disengaged, the Equa-Trac II
valve prevents high system pressure oil from being
supplied to the rear wheel motors.
To do this, charge pressure from the return side of the
hydrostatic system is sent through the solenoid valve to
move the selector spool within the Equa-Trac II valve to
block off oil flow passages to the wheel motors. In
addition, oil pressure in the supply lines between the
Equa-Trac II valve and the wheel motors is routed directly
to the reservoir through the valve so that any pressure in
these lines is removed.
With no pressure on either side of the pistons the pistons
and rollers retract into the cylinder bores when the rollers
are pushed inward by the cam lobes, as the cylinder block D-6395
rotates. With the rollers clear of the cam lobes, the FIG. 276
cylinder block and wheel shaft is able to rotate freely.

FIG. 342: Problem: Power rear axle not operating.
Cause: Solenoid valve not working.
Turn ignition switch to the ON position. DO NOT start the
engine. Have an assistant operate the ON-OFF power
rear axle switch.
A noise must be heard at the solenoid, indicating that the
solenoid valve spool is shifting properly.
• If a noise is not heard, check for a possible loose wire
connection at the terminal of the solenoid valve and
at the power rear axle switch in the cab.
Also check for a bad ground at the solenoid valve. The
solenoid valve gets ground through the Equa-Trac II valve
body.
The ground can be tested by connecting a jumper wire (2)
between the coil mounting nut (3) on the solenoid and the
frame (4) of the combine.
• If the solenoid valve operates properly using a jumper
wire, check the area under the heads of the bolts
fastening the Equa-Trac II valve body to the mounting
bracket. Make sure there is a clean metal to metal
surface with no paint or grease.
• If a noise is still not heard, complete an electrical
resistance check on the solenoid valve coil (1) to
determine if the coil has a defect. The coil resistance
must be 7-9 ohms.
• If the solenoid valve still does not shift after checking
for secure wire connections and acceptable coil
resistance, replacement of the solenoid valve is
necessary.

FIG. 356: The rear wheel motors have a fixed

important to keep traction with the front wheels in order to
have the most help from the rear wheels.
Front wheel spin out can be stopped by shifting to the next

Operation Description
The power rear axle uses hydraulic oil flowing at three
different pressures: charge pressure, system pressure
and motor case drain (return) pressure.

System On - Forward
FIG. 374: When the power rear axle system is in the low
or high (ON) mode, the solenoid coil at the selector valve
is energized.
Charge pressure oil, in the reverse supply hose, first
moves the selector spool in the valve toward the on
position. After the first flow of charge pressure oil to the
wheel motors, more movement of the selector spool
opens ports connected to the forward side of the
propulsion drive pump.
The high pressure oil flow is equally split between the two
rear wheel motors as the oil passes through the forward
flow regulators in the selector valve forward ports. The oil
flow returns from the rear wheel motors at charge P0102118
pressure. The oil flow passes through the reverse side of FIG. 374
the selector valve and back to the propulsion drive pump.
Case drain return oil flows from the rear wheel motors
through a 103.4 kPa (15 psi) check valve back to the
hydraulic reservoir.
Valve drain return oil flows from the selector valve directly
back to the hydraulic reservoir.

Flow Regulator
FIG. 465: The flow regulators purpose is to limit the
maximum flow to a wheel drive motor because of the loss
of traction. The normal result of losing traction is wheel
spin. The result of this is that the speed of the spinning
motor can increase to the limit of available system flow.
The torque is lost at other wheels because of pressure
reduction in the system. The flow regulator mounts in the
hydraulic line to a wheel motor, and controls only the flow
to that motor or axle in one direction of rotation. Free flow
is permitted in the opposite direction, and permits a
second regulator valve to separately control flow in the
opposite direction.

FIG. 471: To start the drive cycle, hydraulic oil under high
system pressure is supplied from the main hydrostatic
pump and is sent through the selector valve and then
supplied equally to the high pressure inlet passage (1) at
both rear wheel motors.
The oil is sent through the passage (2) in the distributor

are partially aligned, permitting oil to begin entering the
cylinder cavity (6) behind the piston (7).
The high pressure oil pushes the piston outward causing

FIG. 559
The following specifications will determine if the problem
is within the power rear axle system:
1. Leakage from the rear wheel motors must not be
more than 7.61 l/min (2.0 gal/min) with the machine
moving at system pressure.
2. The selector valve leakage must not be more than 82
cu cm/min (5 cu in/min)
If excessive leakage occurs, refer to the wheel motor
service instructions and repair or replace the wheel motor
and replace the selector valve.
