CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Foreign literature

A study by Mozeliuz, et al. (2016). In her/his study findings of the study


habits among digital gaming natives’ gaming habits absolutely were strong enough
and that students’ study habits have collided in many situations. This supports to the
findings of Cornillez, Jr. (2020) which states that study habits of the students were
greatly affected due to playing mobile games.

Another study by Marcal Mora-Cantallops and Miguel-Angel Sicilia, (2018).


This article aims to perform a literature review of the available research that focuses
strictly on MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) games. First, a review identifying
the relevant papers published since 2011 is conducted, exploring them systematically
to extract similarities, gaps and main findings. Results show how League of Legends
is the most explored game, with player experience and toxic behavior as popular
topics for research It means that Mobile Legend is the most explored game, toxic
behavior is a way of sending out the vibe that you owe them something. Sometimes
they have also a way of doing something that hurts you, then maintaining they were
doing it all for you. Over all, the players are having a toxic behavior and competitive.
Compete against each team or to destroy the opponent team. Strategically game that
needs to plan and the cooperation in each player on the team, to plan, to defend and to
work as one, to win the battle.

This study is conducted by Elizabeth Scott, MS (2019). In her article "The


Link Between Video Games and Stress Relief” tackles about the video games effects
to teens these days. As per her study, playing video games can affect a teen in two
ways which is positive and negative. Most gamer report that playing video games
even the violent ones is a way to relieve stress and they're enjoying playing with their
friends. However, much of the research that have been conducted on video games
comes with the presumption that playing video games gives stress or even
psychologically harmful to people. This literature is fitting with the present study for
it directly mentions the effects of playing online games to the stress of the teens and
the role of video/mobile gaming to the students and teens.
According to the journal of Sunarto, et al., (2019), Mawalia (2020) and Aviso
et al. (2020) however based on the studies conducted by several researchers, playing
mobile legends poses various negative effects among players such as: harm the
interaction process in the real world that makes them passive and dependent on the
game Mawalia (2020); get addicted and had a lot of self- changes since starting and
continuing to play and joining the community of Mobile Legends; Sunarto et al
(2019); affect the mental health and academic performance among students Aviso etal
(2020), and worst case scenario, it can lead to death.

According to Mubarak et al., (2022). Titled “The Intensity of Playing Mobile


Legends Games withCollege Student Academic Procrastination” a vowed that the
higher the intensity of playing mobile legends the higher the level of
student academic procrastination that may lead to unsatisfactory grades. As
well as if students have a low intensity of playing Mobile Legends game, the lower
the academic procrastination and leading their grades excellent.

Local literature

A study by Reuel John F Lumawag, ( 2015). In Davao, playing online games


is part of the lives of young people not only in Davao but also throughout the
Philippines. There are more and more young people who are addicted to online games
than those who are addicted to drugs, the problem of the Philippines is the same as the
problem of Davao, the students are always absent to play.

Another study by Ong, (2017). By not eating at the right time will cause pain
in the stomach and even in the head; this is the result of the human body's digestive
system having nothing to digest and no proteins and vitamins to bring to the brain to
function naturally. Not eating food at the right time, Ong added, can cause nutrient
deficiency that can give people fatigue, poor mental function and other diseases.
There can be nausea, fatigue, extreme hunger and infection or have gastric acidity or
reflux when always skipping meals.
According to Jobert Recabe, (2017). Based on the data obtained, 9% of the
respondents always play in class; 42% of respondents play only once in class; 35% do
not play; 14% of respondents often play games in class. The data clearly indicates
that, students play on-line games while their teachers are teaching but their attention is
still irrevocably drawn to playing ML even when they are talking or listening to
someone.

According to Santos and Cruz, (2018). In a local study by Santos and Cruz
(2018), it was found that students who engage in extensive gaming, particularly with
mobile games like Mobile Legends, may exhibit poor time management skills and
neglect academic responsibilities.

According to DIWA, (2019). They revealed that the popularity of gamers in


the Philippines increased over the decade and mobile games has a great influence with
the boom of smartphones and tablet in recent years. With these, there’s easier access
for the children to be involve in mobile games and recent studies say that there are
lasting positive impacts developing certain skills in students and improve their
problem solving abilities, communication skills, interest in studying to program
games and helps students cope with stress. This article is related in the present study
because it shows that video games help students cope with stress. The better the
games the faster the overall recovery from stress, it also helped players become
involve in metal health problems and hostile in high stress development.
