Assignment #1.

1. A concrete pile group embedded in a clay layer is shown in figure 1 below.

If center to center spacing between piles is three times the
diameter(d=0.40m)of individual piles, determine:
a) The allowable load carrying capacity of a single pile (Use Meyerhof’s
method for tip resistance and λ-method for skin resistance)
b) The elastic settlement of a single pile
c) The allowable load-bearing capacity of the pile group.
d) The elastic settlement of the pile group Vesic’s method
e) Consolidation settlement of the pile group, and total settlement
f) Check the stability of foundation if permissible settlement is 120mm

Use Ep =24×106 KN/m2, ES=30×106 KN/m2, μ =0.4, ξ =0.5 and a factor of safety of
2.5 for single pile and for the pile group.

Table 1: Relevant soil data

Soil layer Soil properties
Compressible layer Cu=30KN/m2, u=0o =14KN/m3,Cc=0.25,eo=0.75
Stiff Clay soil layer I Cu=75KN/m2,u=0o,=18KN/m3, Cc=0.3,eo=0.72
Stiff Clay soil layer II Cu=100KN/m2,u=0o sat =19KN/m3 Cc=0.24,eo=0.8
