Students will be checked on the background knowledge of development which they have studied in the previous grades.

Learning Experiences and Teaching Strategies


Learning experiences:

Lesson 1- Meaning of Development.

Students define the term “International Development”.

They will list the different keywords that they know of and share their ideas with the class.

Key, related concepts and Global Contexts of the unit will be introduced.

Students in the groups will make relevant statement of Inquiry for the unit.

Relevance of the unit will be discussed in the form of mind map.

Lesson 2 and 3- Difference between Growth and Development.

Students are divided into groups and each group will present points on growth and development on points like meaning,
measure and interrelation.

Role of physical and human factors and the ways they contribute in development.

Reading material on factors affecting development.

Lesson 4 and 5- Parameters for measuring development

Introduce the concept of parameters for measuring development by:

• GDP
• HDI

Students will now present evidences on how these parameters measure development .

Group presentation on the parameters that measures development.

• Lesson 6 & 7– North- South Divide and Brandt Line

Peer Tutoring - Students will be divided into three clusters and they will analyse about the North- South Divide and Brandt Line.
Students will explain the concept of Development, Brandt Line and will identify the indicators of development and students will
learn and investigate how one country advances economically from a low income economy to a modern high income economy.

Lesson 9 – Causes of Poverty.

Students will be given study material on causes of poverty. A brief discussion on the causes of poverty will take place.

Causes of Poverty: the quote from Nelson Mandela’s speech hints some of the underlying causes of poverty.

Students will be given a quote of Nelson Mandela’s speech posing the underlying problems of poverty: Students
will explain the major causes of poverty and will also find a LEDC

that they think are poor because of their natural or physical geography and then draw a development compass rose and explain
the causes where they think it best fits on the rose.

Students will also draw a concept map to help find connections between the main causes of world poverty.

Lesson 10 – Millennium Development Goals.

• Students will be shown the real causes of poverty and then the UN’s MDG’s a set of eight goals that aim to halve the world
population

Lesson 11 – Fair Trade

Students will read about Fair trade and class will be divided into two groups to investigate how Fair Trade can affect LEDC and
MEDC and investigate the positive effects of Fair Trade.

Groups on comparison of Fair Trade and its effects on MEDC and LEDC will be given a set of critical thinking questions.

Lesson 12 and 13- Ways to give Aids to the poorer countries.

Students will be given a few news article, on type of aid, its definition and disadvantage/ advantage.

The teacher will give a graph shown the major aid donors and major aid recipients in 2000 by U.N. and will be given some guided
questions to think on it and give reasons to it.

Feedback

Regular Feedbacks are taken in the form of Google Feedback and given in the classwork and Homework notebooks.

Differentiation

Optional questions of higher order skills will be provided for the high achievers. Worksheets will be designed to cater to the
needs of students with mixed ability. During class activities, focus will be towards the ones with learning difficulties.
