Critical Points and Extrema Analysis

The document presents two functions, f(x, y) and T(x, y), analyzing their critical points and local extrema. For f(x, y), a saddle point is identified at (1/4, 1/2) with absolute maximum and minimum values at (1,0) and (0,0) respectively. For T(x, y), a local minimum occurs at (1/2, 0) and absolute maximum and minimum values are found at (-2, 2) and (2, 0) respectively.

1.

f ( x, y ) = 4 x − 8 xy + 2 y + 1

a)
b) Fx = 4 – 8y = 0 » y = ½
Fy = 2 - 8x =0 » x = ¼
Critical point @ ( ¼, ½ ) = 2
Fxx = 0
Fyy = 0
Fxy = -8
D = 0 – (-8)2 = -64
D < 0 and Fxx = 0, so ( ¼, ½ ) is a saddle point

F(3⁄8, 1-x) = 15⁄8 > 1
F(0,3) = 3 (local min )
F(1,0) = 5 (local max)
