Understanding Audio-Visual Synaesthesia

The document discusses three terms: volumetric flask, tuberculosis, and digital camera. It defines volumetric flask as a lab glass or plastic ware used to prepare a solution. It notes that tuberculosis and COVID-19 are both infectious lung diseases but tuberculosis has a longer incubation period. It states that a digital camera is a device that uses an electronic image sensor to take photos and record video.

I. Define the term emphasized in the paragraph in one sentence using the formal
definition.

1. Used to make up a solution to a known volume is called volumetric flask. This refers
to a lab glass or plastic ware used to prepare a solution. They are used to measure
volumes much more precisely than beakers or Erlenmeyer flask.

2. Tuberculosis (TB) and COVID-19 are both infectious diseases that attack primarily
the lungs. Both diseases have similar symptoms such as cough, fever and difficulty
breathing. TB, however, has a longer incubation period with a slower onset of disease.

3. The electronic image sensor to create still photographs and record video is used by a
device called digital camera. The optical system of a digital camera works like a
film camera, in which a typical lens and diaphragm are used to adjust electronic image
sensor lighting. Advanced digital cameras facilitate manual control of most functions.

Audio-Visual Synaesthesia

Audio-visual synaesthesia is a perceptual effect which simultaneously stimulates the senses of vision and
hearing. Each sound sensation is perceived as harmoniously interdependent with a visual sensation.

Synaesthesia is an art form which stems directly from technological roots. The advances in electronics
have made possible the simulation of more than one sense at a time, and future technological advances
may allow the creation of a total perceptual environment.

One of the simplest devices in demonstrating the effect of audio-visual synaethesia is the color organ. A
color organ is an electronic circuit which converts the varying beats and intensities of recorded music to a
corresponding light display. The lights flash with the beat of the music, and their brightness varies with the
volume. Some color organs have circuitry which displays the high tones of a musical passage as one
color, the medium tones as another color, and the low tones as yet another. The overall effect of watching
the display while simultaneously listening to the music is that one can sense that he is “seeing” the music,
or “hearing” the visual display.

In audio-visual synaesthesia, two usually separate sensations are fused into harmonious perceptual
effect. Synaesthesia may be the art form of the future.
