The idea of spending the entire school year, confined by the four walls that surrounded
my living room, staring at a computer screen for hours on end seemed bizarre, yet that was how I
spent the majority of my freshman year, my first year of highschool and I couldn't even have a
genuine experience. Then, everyone had assigned days they could come onto campus, yet that
was a far cry from the environment I had envisioned, Half-empty classrooms, every face was
covered with a mask, substitute teachers trying to navigate remote learning and having lessons
taught by your teacher who wasn't physically there, just projected onto the whiteboard via zoom.
I had no motivation to do anything involving school, like many students I have talked to, I would
sleep through classes and set alarms to join my next ones. It was my first year of highschool yet
it did not feel like it. My grades were slipping through my fingers like sand and I barely passed
my classes with D’s and C’s. My sophomore year I promised myself I would do better.
Summer passes and I am feeling excited to finally have a normal school year on campus,
I had told myself I was going to do better for myself and make sure my grades don't look
anything like they did the year before. I started off strong at the beginning of the year until
November. A video was circulating around the school about me and someone I used to be friends
with. I missed weeks of school and yet again, my grades plummeted. I was so disappointed in
myself. I had lost my motivation yet again, I had convinced myself that my grades were “too far
gone” to be fixed. At the end of the year, I made a promise to myself, again. This time I was
going to stay true to it.

My junior year came around and I promised myself I wasn't going to let my grades look
anything like they did the years before. I worked hard, made sure to ask for help when I needed
it, I rarely had late work, and I made up every test I would miss. I passed my junior year with
straight A’s. I had never been so proud of myself. Although my GPA shows the struggle I went
through my freshman and sophomore years, I am proud of myself for stepping up and working
harder to maintain my grades. It’s my senior year and I am still keeping and acting on that
promise to myself.
