1. OBJECTIVES
This group project, 4 - 6 students, will serve as the End of Assessment (EA) for
this module. Student has to design the following electrical and mechanical
services in a low-rise building provided (softcopy will be provided separately):
- plumbing system,
- drainage system,
- fire protection system,
- mechanical ventilation system, and
- lighting system.
Systems should be designed according to the local statutory requirements or
professional bodies.
Others requirements in this project are indicated in the following parts.
2. Report Format
The preliminary project report shall follow the format specified in Table 2 below.

The report shall be typeset. Calculations shall be presented neatly in proper
engineering handwriting using pencil. All the drawings shall have title box,
border, drawing numbers and titles etc.; and be properly fold in A4 size. Fancy
fonts, scripts, colours and format are not recommended.
3. Report Structure
The preliminary report shall in general consist of the following:
(a) A cover page;
(b) Contents - English shall be clear and free form grammatical mistakes, typo
errors, spelling etc. All references in the report are required to be quoted;
(c) Table of contents - The decimal numbering system for headings should be
adopted;
(d) The body of the report - It is usually divided into three different parts:
introductory chapter, content chapters and a concluding chapter; and
(e) Appendices (list of references, drawings, raw data, calculations, etc.).
4. Plagiarism
The MLA Style Manual provides a very clear idea of plagiarism:
Plagiarism is the use of another person’s ideas or expressions in your writing
without acknowledging the source. The word comes from the Latin word
plagiarius (“kidnapper”), and Alexander Lindey defines it as “the false assumption
of authorship: the wrongful act of taking the product of another person’s mind,
and presenting it as one’s own” (Plagiarism and Originality, New York: Harper,
1952, 2). In short, to plagiarise is to give the impression that you have written or
thought something that you have in fact borrowed from someone else, and to do
so is considered a violation of the professional responsibility to acknowledge
“academic debts” (“Statement on Professional Ethics,” Policy Document and
Reports, 1984 ed., Washington: AAUP, 1984, 134).

There are various ways of quoting the others works. For quoting short, direct
prose, it can be simply enclosed in double quotation marks, and for quoting
paragraphs, it can be set off from the text in single-spaced and indented
paragraphs. The sources shall be acknowledged and it can be done immediately
at the end of the quotation in parentheses. An example is given above.
5. Copyright
In general, copyright is the right given to the owner of an original work. Students
will be treated as cheating in the project work, either copying entirely or in part of
Copyright works, and claiming it as his/her own work. They will be also held
personally responsible for any breach of the copyright in using/photocopying
copyright works, or using unlicensed computing software.
6. Cheating
Once a cheating case is established in the project work, the student concerned is
deemed to have obtained a ZERO score for the assessment.
7. Assessment
Assessment will be calculated as follow:
32% for presentation (8-minute)
68% for report with the following breakdown
- building systems design: a. plumbing system (12%)
b. drainage system (12%)
c. fire protection system (6%)
d. ventilation system (12%)
e. lighting system (12%)
- clarity of the report (14%)
Design should be according to the building plans as per attached following
layouts. Layouts in AutoCAD, JPG, and PDF format will be provided.
