1 Group work

1.1 Group presentation

• The goal is to give a clear and interesting presentation about the topic of your choice.
In assessing the presentation, we will pay particular attention to
• the clarity of presentation
• whether or not the presenter(s) made a clear distinction between main points
and details
• thorough discussion of the scientific merits and demerits of covered findings
and viewpoints
• a critical perspective, different viewpoints
• the relevance to real-world problems and issues
• time-management

• The presentation can be based on any material. You can start from the material that
was provided during the first lecture, but you are encouraged to seek additional
relevant material in the form of extra journal articles, news stories, media, etc...

• For the presentation, it is important to bring a clear, coherent story.

• You do not have to present everything that is in the materials.
• Focusing on one or more aspects of the topic in your presentation is definitely
ok.

• You have a time slot of approx. 25 minutes for the presentation

• After the presentation, there is a discussion of about 10-15 minutes.
• For this purpose, you prepare 2-3 discussion points, questions, statements
• You try to invite/lead the group in a lively debate.
• After each discussion point, you prepare a response on the discussion
question based on theory and/or empirical findings you prepared from the
literature

• Ideally, all members of the group play an active role in the group
presentation/discussion.

• You submit the presentation through TOLEDO in the folder of your topic at the latest
2 hours before the start of the class. After class, the presentation will be posted on
Toledo.

• It is best to bring your own laptop and present from there (especially if you have fancy
graphics or media). However, if needed there will be a PC in the room from which the
presentation can be played if you bring a USB stick (with less guarantee that all
graphics will be displayed as on your own computer).

• You can earn 4 points for the presentation and discussion.

1.2 Group paper:

• The goal is to provide a concise and scientifically valid introduction and discussion of
the research questions your group wants to focus on. In assessing the paper report,
we will pay particular attention to
• the clarity
• the precision
• a good argument/storyline
• whether or not you succeed in checking the scientific merits of the claims in
the chapters
• demonstration of practical/societal relevance

• Specific requests:
• The paper should start with an abstract on a separate page. The abstract
should not exceed 200 words (include a word count below the abstract).
• The minimum length for the main text is 5 pages, the maximum 6 (Title and
abstract page not included).
• The paper should be double-spaced (= distance between different lines), with
no extra spaces between paragraphs.
• The margins are 2 cm (and this to the left, right, top, and bottom)
• Use 12-point fonts.
• More generally, follow APA style for lay-out and referencing

• The paper should be submitted with an appropriate Title Page containing:

• the title of the topic
• the student's names and student numbers
• the date

• You submit the paper through TOLEDO in the folder of your topic at the latest 4 hours
before the start of the class. After the class, the paper will be posted on Toledo.

• It is important that all group members contribute more or less equally to the work and
effort invested in making the paper and/or presentation. To facilitate this, each group
member submits a short statement (max 1⁄2 page) detailing their contribution and
involvement in the paper and presentation. In this statement, clearly outline your own
role in preparing the presentation and paper, and your involvement and contribution
to the group work. You submit this statement in a separate “Contribution statement”
submission portal that can be found under your presentation’s topic folder in Toledo.
The contribution statements needs to be submitted 2 hours before the start of class

• Avoid plagiarism at all costs. Do not attempt to pass off the ideas of someone else as
your own. If text must be taken verbatim from source material, it must appear in
quotation marks and the source must be properly cited.

• You can earn 4 points for the paper.

2 Individual assignments

• Every document that you submit must contain:

• your name and student number
• the date

• Follow APA style (i.e., double-spaced and 12-point font, reference list)

2.1 Individual comments (5 topics of your choice, 4 points in total):

• Of all the topics that will be presented, you select 5 topics to write a comment on (but
not the topic you present yourself or you write an assignment on).

• The goal is to provide a short comment, interesting thought, critical remark, ... on the
material discussed in the previous class (but not simply rehashing class discussion; a
comment must be novel).

• A comment must include at least one reference (to a research article, news, social
media,...).

• As material, you can use the articles, the presentation, the summary, the discussion,
related stuff you read/heard, ...for this task.

• Minimum length is 5 lines, maximum length is half a page.

• When you submit a comment, you must submit one page containing your name, the
title of the topic for your comment + your comment

• Name the file you submit “topic_comment_yourlastnameandfirstname” (e.g.,

generationme_comment_PeterKuppens)

• You submit the file through TOLEDO by 9AM on the Monday after the class in which
the topic is presented. A comment that is not handed in in time is graded 0.

• You can earn a maximum of 4 points (in total) for the comments.

2.2 Individual assignment (once, 4 points):

• You write one assignment about one topic of your choice, but not about the topic you
presented.

• You write an assignment on a topic of your choice the week it is presented.

• In the assignment, the goal is to present novel critical remarks, new ideas, relevant
experimental work, associated theories, ...related to the chapters and/or presentation
and/or discussion your assignment is about.

• The assignment must include at least three references.

• Two pages is the maximum, 20 lines is the minimum.

 • You must submit a file containing the title of the topic of your assignment + your
assignment on one of the topics of that week

• Name the file you submit “topic_assignment_ yourlastnameandfirstname” (e.g.,

generationme_assignment_PeterKuppens)

• You submit the file through TOLEDO by 9AM on the Monday after class in which the
topic is presented. Assignments that are not handed in in time are graded as 0.

• You can earn 4 points for the assignment.
