Comprehension Passage:
The rivers of India play an important role in the lives of the Indians. They provide potable
water, cheap transportation, electricity, and the livelihood for a large number of people all
over the country. This easily explains why nearly all the major cities of India are located by
the banks of rivers. The rivers also have an important role in Hindu Religion and are
considered holy by all Hindus in the country.
Seven major rivers along with their numerous tributaries make up the river system of India.
The largest basin system of the rivers pours their waters into the Bay of Bengal; however,
some of the rivers whose courses take them through the western part of the country and
towards the east of the state of Himachal Pradesh empty into the Arabian Sea. Parts of
Ladakh, northern parts of the Aravalli range and the arid parts of the Thar Desert have
inland drainage.

All major rivers of India originate from one of the following main watersheds:
1. Aravalli range
2. Himalaya and Karakoram ranges
3. Sahyadri or Western Ghats in western India
4. Vindhya and Satpura ranges
Himalayan glaciers in the Indian subcontinent are broadly divided into the three river basins,
namely the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra. The Indus basin has the largest number of
glaciers (3500), whereas the Ganga and Brahmaputra basins contain about 1000 and 660
glaciers, respectively. Ganga is the largest river system in India. However these rivers are
just three among many. Other examples are Narmada, Tapi, and Godavari.

In a 2-stroke engine with exhaust valves, the timing of the closing of the scavenge ports before the exhaust valves optimizes exhaust and scavenge operations by ensuring proper gas flow and pressure balance within the cylinder . This sequence enhances the engine's efficiency by maximizing the expulsion of exhaust gases and intake of fresh air, thereby improving performance and reducing emissions .

The distribution of glaciers in the Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra river basins, with the Indus holding 3500 glaciers and the Ganga and Brahmaputra having 1000 and 660 respectively, plays a crucial role in water resource planning and environmental management in India . These glaciers serve as major water reservoirs that feed the rivers, thereby influencing water availability, ecosystem balance, and disaster management strategies, especially with the challenges posed by climate change .

India's river systems are integral to urban development as they provide essential resources like potable water, transportation, and electricity, which explains why major cities are often located near rivers . Culturally, rivers are considered holy in Hindu religion and play a significant role in religious practices . The diverse drainage patterns, including major basins pouring into either the Bay of Bengal or the Arabian Sea, affect regional development policies and cultural landscapes .

When fighting a fire in the engine room's electrical switchboard, a portable CO2 extinguisher is ideal due to its non-conductive properties, preventing electrical hazards . This choice is a critical safety consideration because incorrect extinguishing methods, such as using water, can cause electrical shorts or worsen the fire scenario .

Hot work on board a ship is strictly regulated and can only be conducted in designated areas or under a Permit to Work system, ensuring proper safety measures are in place . This regulatory framework helps prevent onboard fires and ensures that necessary precautions are taken to safeguard the vessel and crew .

The disparities in glacier numbers among the Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra basins—3500, 1000, and 660 glaciers respectively—highlight distinct hydrological and climatic conditions influencing each region . The Indus basin’s higher glacier count underpins its more sustained water flow, while the others experience greater seasonal variability, affecting water availability, agriculture, and flood management practices. These differences necessitate tailored regional climate strategies and water management policies .

The efficiency of a centrifugal sea water pump is greatly influenced by the condition of its mechanical seals, which are lubricated by sea water from the pump's discharge side . Proper maintenance of this lubrication and regular checks for scale formation or mud/silt deposits, particularly on the Sea Water (S.W.) side, is crucial to avoid reduced cooling efficiency in systems like the J.C.W. cooler .

India's major rivers, which are mainly part of basins flowing into the Bay of Bengal or Arabian Sea, significantly influence regional agricultural practices by providing irrigation and maintaining soil moisture . The variability in inland drainage areas like the Thar Desert affects drought management strategies, necessitating efficient water resource allocations and sophisticated agricultural planning to cope with periods of water scarcity .

Letting combustion blowers run after firing a boiler is crucial to remove combustible vapors, which could otherwise lead to explosive conditions if accumulated within the boiler room . Failure to follow this procedure can result in increased fire risk and potential damage to the boiler system .

Rotocaps in a modern 4-stroke medium speed marine diesel engine are installed to rotate exhaust valve spindles. This rotation ensures even wear down and extended service life of the valve components .
