▪ The ill effects of too much violence seen by children on television
The news estimates that by the time children reach 18 years old, they will have watched
around 18,000 simulated murder scenes. With this case, Bro. Armin Luistro the Department of
Education secretary launch the implementing guidelines of the children’s Television Act of 1997
in order to regulate television shows and promote more child-friendly programs. In this
implementation Secretary Luistro guaranteed that this will also help in developing children’s
values.
The news also covers that the Department of Education held a series of consultation with
different stakeholders regarding on this issue. With this, they implemented a guidelines for
viewing safety and created a television violence rating code to be applied in all TV programs.
Lastly, they also set 15% of television airtime for shows dedicated only for children. Luistro’s
claim seems to be based on childhood development where in children at a young age have not
yet achieved full development . He may believed that television shows specifically those
includes with violence will have an effect to child’s development where they believed that it is
way natural. That it is good to act violent, and there is the possibility that they may imitate the
action’s seen. Without guidance children may tend to follow this undesirable act and may
possibly last until they become adolescent.
American Academy of child and adolescent Psychiatry made a study regarding on this
issue. They’ve enumerated the harmful effects of television violence like being insensitive by
watching violent shows. The study suggests that children who are exposed to television violence
begin to “imitate what they observe” and consider violence as “a way to solve problems.”
We matured individuals or adolescence has already the capacity to distinguish the good and bad
behavior. We all know the things to consider in building children’s personality, identity or
character. And now that we are more expose to technologies to televisions to be specific, we are
also expose to ill effects of constructing growth development mainly children who are not yet
fully develop. There are different question that needs to be address in the society. Like what
elements are involved in order to achieve good morals? With this, there is a theory that can
possibly provide a better understanding of how an individual can develop moral character.
And that’s to be discuss by Ms. Salinas.
