Recently someone asked me if I had a list of the numbers in the Bible and what they mean,
and the scriptures to back this information. This set me to thinking that the study of scripture
numbers might be something we could cover in Sunday School, which is what we are going to do
for the next few Sundays the LORD willing.
Obviously, numbers are important in the Bible, or their frequent usage wouldn’t be
necessary. Imagine what the Bible would be without numbers...GENESIS 5:1-5 would read
something like this; (1) This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created
man, in the likeness of God made he him. (2) Male and female created he them; and blessed them,
and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created. (3) And Adam lived awhile, a
good long while actually, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name
Seth; (4) And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were many, so many in fact that vast
quantities of water past under the bridge after this time: and he begat sons and daughters: (5) And
all the days that Adam lived were considerable, an unbelievable amount actually, and he
died...GENESIS 6:14-16 would read something like this: And God said to Noah (14) Make thee
an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with
pitch. (15) And this is the fashion thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be as long as
John Daly can hit a golf ball with his driver, the breadth of it shall be as long as Clark can hit a
golf ball with his Driver, and the height of it as tall as a real tall tree. (16) A window shalt thou
make to the ark, big enough for you to get through, but not big enough for Mrs. Noah to get
through, (for as you know it is better to dwell in a corner of the top of the ark alone, than with a
brawling woman in a wide ark below); and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof;
with several stories shalt thou make it...Without numbers what would you name the forth book in
the Bible? So, then we see that numbers are important in the Bible.
Furthermore, without numbers we must live without weights and measures, scales, and
balances; thus, scriptures like ISAIAH 40:12 would be meaningless: ISAIAH 40:12 “Who hath
measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and
comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the
hills in a balance?” With numbers many other scriptures would also be meaningless, such as
PSALMS 147:4 “He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.” And JOB
28:25, “To make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure.”
Finally, without numbers there would be no mention of mathematics in the Bible. For
example, without numbers Scriptures like MATTHEW 6:27 would be less meaningful;
MATTHEW 6:27 “Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his Stature?” Without
3
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
numbers and mathematics Paul wouldn’t have needed to write what he did in HEBREWS 8:1
“Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum:”. Without numbers and mathematics
how would Israel divide the land? Finally, we will mention that God made known to Adam and
Eve that they too should take an interest in numbers and mathematics, and so in GENESIS 1:28
God told Adam and Eve several things one of which was to go multiply. So, we see that
mathematics and numbers are important in the Bible.
~0~
Now that we have had a little fun, we will get serious about the study of numbers in the
Bible, what they mean, and the scriptures to back this information. We will start with the number
zero. Zero is a number, and it is found in the Bible zero times. However, the concept of zero is
found in the Bible several times. As you know, anytime you add, subtract, multiply or divide
anything by zero, you end up with zero, nothing. Nothing is found in the Bible several times,
meaning not even one. In other words, zero. Let’s look at some scripture with the thought of zero
in mind. LUKE [Link] “For with God nothing shall be impossible,” in other words: There is with
God zero things that he cannot do. Regarding money, Paul wrote to Timothy in I TIMOTHY 6:7
as one translator puts it: “After all we didn’t bring any money with us when we came, and we can’t
carry away a single penny when we die”, in other words; We brought zero into this world and we
will carry zero out of this world. This same thought is also found in PSALMS 49:16 & 17.
Concerning Christian conduct Paul wrote to us in GALATIANS 6:1-3 (another translation) (1)
Brothers, if anybody is caught in the very act of doing wrong, you who are spiritual, in the spirit
of gentleness, must set him right; each of you continuing to think of yourself for you may be
tempted too. (2) Practice bearing one another’s burdens, and in this way carry out the law of Christ.
(3) If anyone thinks he is too great to stoop to this, he is fooling himself. He is really a nobody. In
other words, if you think you are above doing some wrong that someone else may have done, thus
thinking you are a better person because you didn’t do this thing, then you are yourself a nobody,
a zero. (Of course, God thinks a lot more of each of us than a zero, for after all he sent his only
begotten precious Son Jesus Christ to earth to die for us so that in him, we could have eternal life.
Furthermore, he designed trials, if need be, to test our faith, trials that are much more precious than
gold that perisheth. So, we know then that our life is worth much, much more than zero.)
The next example that I will cover on the concept of zero is found in JOHN 8:10 &11 in
the story of Jesus and the woman taken in the very act of adultery. When it came down to who was
going to stone her Jesus asked the woman: “Woman, where a r e those thine accusers? Hath no
man condemned thee? She said, no man Lord. “In other words, zero men were there without sin
to accuse her.
Finally concerning our thoughts on zero, we come to some scripture we recently covered a
little in a previous Sunday School class, a thought found in ROMANS 8:35-39, which I will
express to you this way” Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” Zero persons, places, or
things. In other words, nothing shall separate us from the love of Christ.
So, what we have learned here, then is that zero equals nothing. (0 = nothing).
On the opposite end of the scale (so to speak) from zero we have the concept of the number
Infinity. Infinity is a number we cannot define, nor a concept we can fully understand. Infinity
equates to eternity. Also, infinity goes two ways, all the way back in time, and all the way forward
in time. All the way back takes us to GENESIS 1:1 and JOHN 1:1; “In the beginning” (in the
4
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
eternity past) we find God. There also “in the beginning” also “was the Word, and the Word was
with God, and the Word was God”. In other words, before infinity past, before eternity past, God.
Looking forward in time we see the other side of infinity, that being eternity, in other words forever.
This of course is a concept our human mind fails to fully grasp, except only by faith. God is that
high and Lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy, (ISAIAH 57:15). He is the
infinity past, and the infinity future (if you will); the Alpha and Omega; the first and the last: the
one to whom will be glory and dominion forever and ever, (REVELATION 1:4-11). ISAIAH 44:6;
48:12 & 13.
The concept of infinity (eternity) is found all through scripture, encompassing eternal God.
Briefly let me give you a few examples of this infinity concept. Turn to EPHESIANS 1:3 and
follow as I emphasize the thought of infinity contained therein; “Blessed be the eternal God and
Father of our eternal Lord Jesus Christ, who in infinity past hath blessed us with an infinite amount
of spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.” And the concept of infinity can be found in
EPHESIANS 3:20 as I read it to you this way: ‘Now unto him that is able to do exceeding
abundantly above infinity all that we ask or think.” Then, one more scripture we will read with the
thought of infinity in mind, PHILIPPIANS 4:13; ‘I can do an infinite number of things through
Christ which strengtheneth me.”
So, we see that even if we had a number for infinity, it would equal eternity, and be beyond
our limited human frail ability to comprehend it, consequently we can only see this number infinity
by faith.

Next, we will consider the number one. One speaks of unity in all Languages. One is a
primary number, and is not made up of any other numbers, thus one is independent of all others.
In other words, one stands alone. One cannot be divided. One is the source of all other numbers.
Thus, I think you can see that one applies to God, the Father of Jesus Christ, and of all who are
‘born of God”. God is supreme over all, in other words God is number one. We too like Jesus did,
should allow God to be number one in our hearts and minds and activities. DEUTERONOMY
6:4-7. I CORINTHIANS 8:6; JOHN 10:30; JOHN 17:20-23; EPHESIANS 4:3-6.
One with God is a majority. One man (Samson) with the help of God, slew 1000 men with
a new jawbone of an ass, JUDGES 15:14-17. One man with God (Shamgar), slew of the Philistines
600 men with an ox goad, JUDGES 3:31. One man with God (Jashobeam), slew 300 men with a
spear at one time. So did Abishai, this found in I CHRONICLES 11. One man with God, Elijah,
prayed earnestly that it might not rain, and it didn’t rain on the earth for 31 years. Many other
things could be said about one God, and one united with God, but I think from what we have
briefly just read that it is a true statement, one with God is a majority.
Thus, we see that one stands for unity, and when denoting a person, one usually speaks of
God, the true number one.
~2~
Simply put, the number two is the number of sufficient testimony, or the number of
sufficient witness. Examples of this fact are scattered throughout the whole Bible. We won’t cover
every time the number two occurs as the number of sufficient testimony but will give enough
examples to show that this is so.
In GENESIS 41 Joseph “Pharaoh dreamed two dreams, and verse 32 explains why:
(another translation) “The double dream gives double impact, showing that what I have told you
5
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
is certainly going to happen, for GOD has decreed it, and it is going to happen soon.” (In other
words, these two dreams were to be a sufficient witness to Pharaoh that there would be seven years
of plenty and seven years of famine in Egypt). DEUTERONOMY 17:6; 19:15; II CORINTHIANS
13:1; I TIMOTHY 5:19; HEBREWS 10:28; JOHN 8:17-18. Two men were translated in the Old
Testament: Enoch in GENESIS 5:24, and Elijah in II KINGS [Link] (this is sufficient testimony to
us that God can translate people, and that there will be a translation of the living in the New
Testament, as stated in I THESSALONIANS 4:17). In MARK 6:7 Jesus sent his disciples forth by
two’s. In the book of NUMBERS, two of the twelve Jewish spies brought a good report, (Joshua
& Caleb). And there are many other scriptures we could give on why two is the number of
sufficient testimony, but I think you get the idea from what we have just read.
Furthermore, there are many other interesting facts regarding two in the Bible, of which I
will give you a partial list. There are two testaments in the Bible. There are two books in the Bible
which have the names of women, RUTH & ESTHER. In the Bible there are two verses of two
words each, JOHN 11:35 & I THESSALONIANS 5:16. Two women’s’ ages are given in the Bible,
Sarah in GENESIS 17:17 and 23:1-2, and Anna in LUKE 2:36-37. Two men asked the name of an
angel, Jacob in GENESIS 32:29 and Manoah in JUDGES 13:17-19. Two men in the Bible hanged
themselves, Ahithophel in II SAMUEL 17:23 and Judas Iscariot in MATTHEW 27:3-5. In the
Bible two men’s eyes were put out, Samson in JUDGES 16:20-21 and Zedekiah in II KINGS 25:7.
Two men saw Jesus after his ascension, Stephen in ACTS 7:55 and Paul in ACTS 9; 23:11; I
CORINTHIANS 15:8. Plus, I am sure you can think of many other twos in scripture.
~3~
Primarily the number three is the number of Trinity. (The word trinity is not found in the
Bible, but we understand the concept of the Trinity, that being God the Father, God the Son, and
God the Holy Spirit). I JOHN 5:7
In the number one we found God. God is number one. He was in the beginning (GENESIS
1:1 & JOHN 1:1-2). In the number two we find Jesus. The Lord Jesus Christ is the second person
in the trinity, and in everything he did on the earth he pointed to number one, God the Father.
JOHN 6:38-40. JESUS was also in the beginning with God, JOHN 1:1-2, 14. The third person in
the trinity is the Holy Spirit. MARK 1:9-11; JOHN 14:16-17, 26; ACTS 1:1-8. So, we see that the
number three is the number of Trinity.
Three also is a number of Resurrection, for it was on the third day that Jesus rose from the
dead. In the book of JONAH, Jonah spent 3 days and 3 nights in the belly of a great fish. Jesus
used Jonah’s example of being resurrected from the belly of the great fish to foretell of his
resurrection from the heart of the earth. MATTHEW 12:38-40. I CORINTHIANS 15:3-4. ON
THE THIRD DAY IN GENESIS 1:9-1 God caused the waters to gather up unto one place, and the
earth rose up out of the water, and the grasses, and the trees rose up out of the earth. Another
example of three being a number of resurrection comes from the fact that Jesus raised 3 people
from t h e dead; LUKE 7; 11-15; 8:40-56; JOHN 11:1-44. There were also three people raised
from the and dead in the Old Testament; I KINGS 17:17-24; II KINGS 4:32-35 and 13:20-21.
Some other threes mentioned in the Bible. Three heavens (heaven of clouds, heaven of
stars, and God’s abode), II CORINTHIANS 12:2. Three times in the Bible Abraham is called the
“friend of God”, (II CHRONICLES 20:7, ISAIAH 41:8, JAMES 2:23). The word Christian(s) is
found three times in the Bible, (ACTS 11:26, 26:28; I PETER 4:16).
There are many other threes mentioned in the Bible, for the number 3 is found 467 times
in the King James version.

THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
~4~
Four is a little tougher number to define in that it has a couple of related meanings which
point to human weakness. As we will see, the number four stands for the weakness found in the
world and in man. Related to this, four is a number of creation, and marks God’s creative works,
thus four is a number of the earth. G o d created 4 corners of the earth, and 4 winds on the earth
(REVELATION 7:1). On the earth God created 4 directions, (north, south, east and west). God
created four seasons, spring, summer, autumn and winter. God made four divisions in our day,
morning, noon, evening and night. God created four kinds of flesh - - that of man, beasts, fish, and
fowl (I CORINTHIANS 15:39). On the fourth day material creation was finished, (GENESIS 1:14-
19).
God created man from the dust of the earth (GENESIS 2:7). Further, God created man of
the earth, earthy, which is suggestive of frailty and weakness, (I CORINTHIANS 15:47). Thus,
we see how four can be considered a number picturing the human weakness of man, especially in
the light of all of God’s creation. In REVELATION 5:9 we find four divisions of the human race:
(1) kindred, (2) tongue, (3) people and (4) nation.
There are four pictures of Christ portrayed in the four gospels: (1) Christ as King is pictured
in MATTHEW: (2) Christ as the servant is pictured in MARK; (3) Christ as the “Son of Man” is
pictured in LUKE: and (4) Christ as the heavenly “Son of God” is pictured in JOHN. These four
characteristics are also found of the four living creatures (types like Jesus) pictured in
REVELATION 4:7. The first type like Jesus was like a lion (the king of the wild beasts), and the
second type like Jesus was like a calf (or ox), picturing the servant , the third type like Jesus had a
face as a man, and the fourth type like Jesus had the face of the king of the birds, the eagle, the
heavenly one.
There were four times in scripture when the creator enabled humanly weak man to cross
the route of water on dry ground, EXODUS 14:22, JOSHUA 3:14-17, II KINGS 2:8 and 2:14.
(Note that the last three crossings were across the river Jordon, picturing the resurrection from the
dead, the Jordon River being the river that flows into the dead sea). There are four humanly weak
beggars recorded in scripture, all who had their needs met by the creator; MARK 10:46-52; LUKE
16:20-31; JOHN 9:1-8; and ACTS 3:2-8.
Four times in scripture Eve is mentioned by name: GENESIS 3:20, 4:1; II CORINTHIANS
11:3 and I TIMOTHY 2:13.
The number 4 is found 305 times in scripture, thus giving many other examples that four
is an earthly number, a number of things created by God, and a number showing man’s weakness,
and helplessness, and vanity.
~5~
Five is the number of grace. I think that when we get through studying this number, we
will all have a little better understanding of grace.
The first time in the Bible that the word grace is used is found in Genesis 6:8, “But Noah
found grace in the eyes of the LORD”. The mention of Noah in this verse is the fifth time we find
Noah’s name mentioned in scripture. The fifth time we find Ruth’s name in scripture is in RUTH
2:2. Let’s read this scripture with the thought of grace in mind, RUTH 2:2. These two scriptures
alone should be sufficient testimony that the number 5 is the number of grace, yet we have many
more scriptures to verify this fact. Here in RUTH, during the discourse between Ruth and Boaz in
7
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
RUTH 2:8-10 we find Boaz’s name mentioned for the fifth time in scripture. In verse 10 Ruth says
to Boaz (a type of Christ); “Why have I found grace in thine eyes, ...?’ The fifth time David’s name
is mentioned in I SAMUEL is in I SAMUEL 16:22. I SAMUEL 16:22. The word favour in this
verse means grace.
In ROMANS 5 we have five much more’s and five times the word grace is used, showing
us how much more grace did abound, (ROMANS 5:9-10, 15, 17 & 20).
I n JOHN 1:17 we find that grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. In MATTHEW 1 we find
a listing of the generation of Jesus Christ, a lineage in which 5 women are deliberately mentioned
by the Holy Spirit to show us, by studying their background, grace. A s we go through this list of
five women in MATTHEW 1 realize that it is not normally common in the listing of Jewish
genealogies to mention WOMEN. Also keep in mind that Jesus, being the Son of God, could have
picked any family he wanted to be born of, and yet he chose this one to show us that grace was in
his plan from infinity past, and that yes indeed grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. These five
women mentioned in MATTHEW 1 in the lineage of Christ, from most recent to most ancient are:
(1) Mary (MATTHEW 1:16). Mary, the mother of Jesus, had a stigma attached to her just for being
the mother of Jesus, for she was found with child before she married Joseph; MATTHEW 1:18-
25. Thirty some years later the Pharisee’s stated to Jesus in JOHN 8:41, “We be not born of
fornication”, implying that Jesus was. (2) Bathsheba (MATTHEW 1:6). Bathsheba, the one who
had been the wife of Uriah, whom David had killed after he found out that Bathsheba was going
to have David’s child. On your own read II SAMUEL 11 for the whole horrible story, and further,
how would you like to have that skeleton in your family closet? (As a side note here, I
CHRONICLES 11:41 further tells us that Uriah was also one of David’s valiant men!). (3) Ruth
(MATTHEW 1:5). Ruth was a Moabitess, one who should not enter into the congregation of the
Lord, even to their tenth generation (DEUTERONOMY 23:3). (4) Rachab (MATTHEW 1:5).
Rachab, the harlot, became the wife of Salma, (whom I think may have been one of the two men
Joshua sent to spy out Jericho). How would you like to know that one of your grandmothers was
a harlot? Of these five women, Rachab is the only one found in HEBREWS 11! Truly God is no
respecter of persons, truly God is a God of grace! (5) Thamar (MATTHEW 1:3). Thamar came
into the lineage of Christ because she conceived twins of her father-in-law Judah, (GENESIS 38).
These are the five women who are mentioned in the lineage of Christ, and by studying their
background we see grace.
In EXODUS 6:26; 7:4; 12:17 & 51 we find before the fact that God saw the children of
Israel and their armies, yet these Israelites were slave people, not armed except for the presence of
most gracious God. Yet EXODUS 13:18 shows that God led the children of Israel out of Egypt by
grace. EXODUS 13:18, “But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the
Red Sea: and the children of Israel went up ‘by five in a rank’ out of the land of Egypt.” (That is
what harnessed means in Hebrew, coming from a root word meaning to be armed.)
David faced Goliath armed with five smooth stones: (4 for David’s human weakness, plus
one for divine strength).
There were in the law of Moses in the book of LEVITICUS 5 symbolic offerings: The
burnt-offering (LEVITICUS 1:3), the meal-offering (LEVITICUS 2:1), the peace-offering
(LEVITICUS 3:1), the sin-offering (LEVITICUS 4:3), and the trespass-offering (LEVITICUS
5:6). There were five different animals that could be used for the burnt offerings found in
LEVITICUS chapter 1. These animals were the bullock (1:5), the sheep (1:10), the goat (1:10),
the turtle dove (1:14), and the pigeon (1:14). Each one of these burnt offerings typifies Christ
offering Himself without spot to God of his own voluntary will to become sin for us, even though
8
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
he knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him: for by grace are ye saved
through faith. The bullock, or ox, shows Christ as the patient and enduring Servant who became
obedient unto death, even the death of the cross, (PHILIPPIANS 2:5-8). The sheep, or lamb, shows
Christ who “was led as a sheep to the slaughter” (ISAIAH 53;7 and ACTS 8:31). The goat typifies
the sinner, but Christ became the sinners substitute, “for he hath made him to be sin for us, who
knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” (II CORNITHIANS 5:21).
The turtledove and pigeon were sacrifices allowed in cases of extreme poverty and show us that
Christ died f o r everybody, rich or poor. II CORINTHIANS 8:9.
There were 5 ingredients in the holy anointing oil found in EXODUS 30:23-25. They are
(1) myrrh, (2) sweet cinnamon, (3) sweet calamus, (4) cassis and, (5) olive oil.
There were 5 priests consecrated to God, (EXODUS 28;1). The garments of the priests
were made of 5 different kinds of materials, (EXODUS 28:5).
There are given to us 5 ministries through which God’s grace is to be revealed found in
EPHESIANS 4:7-11, namely -- Apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. There are 5
books in the Psalms. In ISAIAH 9:6 we read of 5 names by which Jesus was to be called. In JOHN
1:17 we read a in that grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
There were 5 men who lived over 900 years: Methuselah - 969 years (GENESIS 5:27),
Jared - 962 years (GENESIS 5:20); Noah - 950 years (GENESIS 9:29); Adam - 930 years
(GENESIS 5:5), and Seth - 912 years (GENESIS 5:8).
There are many other scriptures pertaining to the number 5. Study them out and I think you
will still see that without a doubt 5 is the number of GRACE.
~6~
The number six has two distinctive meanings. First, we will show that six is a number of
man. Second, we will show that six is a number of Satan. Then, thirdly, we will show that the
number six is a number showing Satan’s influence over worldly man.
First, we will show that six is a number of man. On the sixth day God created man,
GENESIS 1:26-31. Man’s appointed days of labor were 6, EXODUS 20:9; 34:21.
Six years the land was to be worked by man, LEVITICUS 25:3. There were 6 cities of refuge
which a man could flee to for safety in the unfortunate advent of killing a man by accident,
NUMBERS 35:10-15. The Hebrew slave was to serve 6 years, DEUTERONOMY 15:12-18. Six
times in the New Testament man asked the Lord for a sign: MATTHEW 12:38-40 (also
MATTHEW 16:1; MARK 8:11); MATTHEW 24:3, (also MARK 13:4); LUKE 11:16; JOHN
2:18; JOHN 6:30. During the crucifixion of Jesus, 6 different people bore testimony to Jesus’
innocence: (1) Judas, MATTHEW 27:3-4; (2) Pilates wife, MATTHEW 27:19; (3) Pilate, LUKE
23:13-14, (4)Herod, LUKE 23:15; (5) the dying thief, LUKE 23:39-41; (6)the centurion, LUKE’
23:46-47. One more, Cain’s descendants are given only to the sixth generation (GENESIS 4:16-
24), (1) Enoch, (2) Irad (3) Mehujael, (4) Methusael, (5) Lamech, (6) Jebel and Jubal and Tubal-
Cain. So, we see that one of the meanings of the number six is a number of man.
Secondly, the number six is also a number of Satan: REVELATION 12:9 and 20:2 plainly
show that old serpent is also called Satan. That old serpent is the sixth character mentioned in the
Bible: (1) God the Father, (2) God the Son, (3) God the Holy Spirit (GENESIS 1:1-2,26; JOHN
1:1&2), (4) Adam, (5) Eve (GENESIS 2:21-24), (6) the serpent (GENESIS 3;1-15). Satan has six
troper names; (1) Beelzebub, MARK 3:22-23, plus many other scriptures, (2) Devil, (found 60
times in the New Testament), (3) Dragon, REVELATION 12:9, (4) Lucifer; ISAIAH 14:12, (5)
prince, MATTHEW 12:24-28, (6) Satan, found 55 times in scripture. There are six names we find
9
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
in the Bible showing Satan in TYPE: (1) Adder, PSALMS 91:13 with ROMANS 6:20, (2)
adversary, I PETER 5:8, (3) Belial, II CORINTHIAN 6:15, (4) 1eviathan, ISAIAH 27:1. (5) star,
REVELATION 8:10-11, (6) wormwood, REVELATION 8 :11. In Matthew’s account of the
temptation of Jesus by Satan found in MATTHEW 4:1-11, we find the word devil occurring 4
times, the word tempter 1 time and the word Satan 1 time = 6, (tempter is another name for Satan
found twice in the Bible, here in MATTHEW 4:3 and in I THESSALONIAN 3:5. In Luke’s
account of the temptation of Jesus by Satan in LUKE 4:1-13 we find the word devil used 5 times,
and Satan 1 time, equaling 6.
Thirdly, six is a number showing that Satan, “the prince of the power of the air worketh in
the children of disobedience’’ (EPHESIANS 2:2). Two good examples of this are found in Goliath
and Nebuchadnezzar. Goliath had six pieces of equipment in his armor found in I SAMUEL17:4-
8: (1) a helmet of brass upon his head, (2) a coat of mail made of brass, (3) greaves of brass upon
his legs, (4) a target of brass between his shoulders, (5) a spear, (6) and a shield.*Nebuchadnezzar
in DANIEL 3:1 made an image of God 60 cubits high and 6 cubits abroad. In verse 5 we find 6
different musical instruments, which, when played together the image was to be worshipped.
Other examples of Satan’s influence over man being associated with the number 6 are
found in the following scriptures: PROVERBS 6:16-19, we find 6 things that the LORD hates, 6
things influenced by Satan; PROVERBS 6:16-19. 6 times Jesus was charged with having a devil,
a charge initiated by Satan into the minds of the accusers: (1) MATTHEW 9:34, (2) MATTHEW
12;24, MARK 3:22 & LUKE 11:15, (3) JOHN 7:20, (4) JOHN 8:48 (5) J0HN 8:52 and (6) JOHN
10:20. The sixth work of the flesh listed in GALATIANS 5:19-21 is witchcraft, something else
showing Satan’s influence over man. Finally, we find six things that the children of Israel lusted
after from Egypt when they were in the wilderness, NUMBERS 11:4-5.
The number six is used 199 times in the Bible.
~7~
Seven is another one of those prime numbers, a number which cannot be divided by another
whole number, just like 1, 3 and 5. Seven shows divine or spiritual perfection or completeness.
Seven is the second most used number in the Bible, behind the number one. Seven is used over
700 times in the Bible. Plus, there are many other sevens found in scripture, as I am sure you have
noticed in your own studies. Seven was the most sacred number to the Hebrews.
On the seventh day GOD completed his work creating the heavens and the earth, GENESIS
2:1-3. While here in GENESIS, note that the word created is used 7 times in connection with God’s
creative work before it was declared completed, GENESIS 1:1; 21; 27 (three times); 2:3 and 2:4.
In GENESIS 1 we read seven times that “God saw”, showing that God saw everything perfect in
his material creation: GENESIS (1) 1:4, (2) 1:10, (3)1:12, (4)1:18, (5) 1:21, (6) 1:25 and (7) 1:31.
Enoch was the seventh from Adam (JUDE 14), and he was translated, God seeing him spiritually

THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
complete. To complete a week requires 7 days. There are 7 notes to complete the musical scale.
Seven colors complete the rainbow. In GENESIS 6:9 we find Noah’s name for the seventh time in
the Bible, and it says: “Noah was a just man, and perfect in his generations.” In JOSHUA 6 we
find the children of Israel getting a complete victory over the city of Jericho after marching around
the city 7 times and on the 7th day; JOSHUA 6:1-16. In, LEVITICUS 16:14 f we find, on the day
of atonement, the high priest sprinkling the blood upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat
7 times. This is a picture of the completeness of the redemptive work of Christ done at Calvary.
LEVITICUS 16:14 and HEBREW 9:12. (The day of atonement was in the seventh month,
LEVITICUS 16:29-30).
There were seven statements made by Jesus while on the cross, with not one complaint
against his enemies while on the cross, showing that Jesus died in perfect victory, having
completed his work he came to earth to do. These seven statements made by Jesus while on the
cross are found in the following scriptures: (1) LUKE 23:34, (2) LUKE 23:43 (3) MATTHEW
27:46 (4) JOHN 19:26-27 (5) JOHN 19:28 (6) LUKE 23:46 and (7) JOHN 19:30.
In EPHESIANS 6 :10-18 we find 7 pieces of armor for spiritual complete Christians: (1)
the shield of faith, (2) the girdle of truth (3) the breastplate of righteousness (4) the shoes (5) the
helmet of salvation (6) the sword of the spirit, and (7) prayer.
Brother Hill has a tract out on this portion of scripture called “The Warfare of the Believer”.
Seven times the word “together” is found in EPHESIANS, showing how complete, we are in
Christ: (1)1:10, (2) 2:5, (3) 2:6, (4) 2:6, (5) 2:21, (6) 2:22, (7) 4,16.
There were seven Church Apostles given for this grace age: (1) Paul, (GALATIANS 1:1
and ACTS 14:14); (2) Apollos (I CORINTHIAN4S 4:6, 9); (3) Barnabas (GALATIAN 2:1 and
ACTS 14:14); (4) Epaphroditus (PHILIPPIANS 2:25; (5) TITUS (GALATIANS 2:1 and II
CORINTHIANS 8:23; (6) Silas (Silvanus) (I THESSALONIAN 1:1 and 2:6 and (7) Timothy (I
Thessalonians 1:1, 3:2, 6).
The book of REVELATION is full of sevens and is the book which shows the completeness
of all things. In REVELATION we find 7 churches; 7 seals; 7 trumpets; 7 vials; 7 dooms; 7 new
things; 7 spirits; 7 candlesticks; 7 stars; 7 lamps; 7 horns; 7 eyes; 7 thunders; 7 heads; 7 angles; 7
plagues and 7 mountains. Also, there are 7 blessings of the Lord to his people in REVELATION
(1:) 1:3 (2)14:1.3 (3) 16:15 (4) 19:9 (5) 20:6 (6) 22:7 and (7) 22:14.
Seven PSALMS are ascribed to David in the New Testament, specifically: (1) ACTS 4:25
referring to PSALMS 2:1 (2) ACTS 2:25 referring to PSALMS 16:8 (3) ROMANS 4:6 referring
to PSALMS 32:2 (4) ACTS 1:16 referring to PSALMS 41:9 (5) ROMANS 11:9 referring Psalms
69:22 (6) HEBREWS 4:7 referring to PSALMS 95:7 and (7)MATTHEW 22:43 referring to Psalms
110:1.
~8~
The number eight is the number of NEW BEGINNING, NEW CREATION, NEW BIRTH
and RESURRECTION. All of these meanings are related.
The first day of the week is the 8th day, in other words the beginning of a new week takes
place on the eighth day. The eighth note of the scale is the same as the first, in other words a new
musical scale takes place with the eighth note. Again, 8 is the number of NEW BEGINNING.
Eight souls after the flood were left to the NEW BEGINNING of populating the earth, I PETER
3:20-21. Speaking of Noah, the eighth time we find Noah’s name is in GENESIS 6:9, where it
shows that Noah had a NEW BEGINNING and a NEW CREATION with God, for…’’Noah
walked with God,” (GENESIS 6:9), (By the way, it is only recorded in scripture this way twice
11
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
that a man walked with God: Enoch walked with God and was translated; Noah walked with God
and was saved from the flood that destroyed all but the 8 souls we just read about in I PETER 3:20,
these 8 souls saved for a NEW BEGINNING).
Eight is also a number of RESURRECTION. Jesus arose from the dead on the eighth day
of the week, which, as we just learned, is the same as the first day of the week, JOHN 20:1-18.
Besides the resurrection of Jesus and also the strong possibility that Paul also was raised from the
dead, there is recorded in scripture 8 individuals who were for certain RESURRECTED from the
dead, which we mentioned once before in our numbers study. Again, these eight are: (1) the
widow’s son raised by the Lord because of the prayer of faith of Elijah, I KINGS 17:17~25; (2)
The son of the Shunammite, a wealthy woman, who was raised from the dead because of the prayer
of faith of Elisha, II KINGS 4:32-37; (3) in line with the double portion of the spirit granted Elisha,
another man was RESURRECTED from the dead during his burial after touching the bones of
Elisha in his sepulcher, II KINGS 13:20-21; (Note: that these 3 people resurrected from the dead
in the Old Testament were a widows son, a rich persons child, and a dead man during the time of
burial. In the New Testament Jesus RESURRECTED from the dead a widow’s son, the child of a
rich person, and a dead man after the time of burial); (4) Jesus raised the son of the widow of Nain
in LUKE-7:11-18; (5) Jesus raised the daughter of Jarius, a rich man and a ruler of the synagogue,
this story found in LUKE 8 z41-56 and MARK5 :35-43; (6) Jesus raised Lazarus after he was
buried and dead four days, JOHN 11; (7) The prayer of Spirit filled Peter raised Tabitha from the
dead in ACTS 9:36-42, and (8) Eutychus was raised from the dead after falling asleep during one
of Paul’s lengthy sermons, and falling. three stories to his death, ACTS 20:9-10. Again 8 is a
number of RESURRECTION,
The number 8 is also a number of NEW BIRTH showing NEW CREATION. In JOHN
3:1-16 we find the word “born” 8 times during the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus. In
verse 7, Jesus tells Nicodemus, “Ye must be born again”. In our lessons on the life of the apostle
Paul we found that several times Paul spoke about circumcision, and tha.t true circumcision is the
circumcision of the heart, which takes place after the NEWBIRTH, COLOSSIANS 2 10-12. The
circumcision of the male newborn children of Israel pictures a type of the NEW BIRTH in Christ,
and a male child was circumcised on the 8th day, GENESIS 17:12, and ROMAN2S:2 8 & 29.
In JOHN 4:4-15, Jesus begins a conversation with the Samaritan woman. In these verses
he talks to her about the NEW BIRTH and a NEW BEGINNING. in this portion of scripture, you
will find the word “water” mentioned 8 times, and the word “well” mentioned 5 times. Now
knowing your numbers, you can see pictured in this story that the NEW BIRTH is provided by the
living water from the well of grace: “For by grace are ye saved through faith” (EPHESIANS 2:8).
8 times the “land of Canaan” is mentioned in JOSHUA, a land of NEW BEGINNING for the
children-of Israel.,
Abraham had 8 sons (I CHRONICLES 2:8 and 32 along with GENESIS 25:1-2), remember
that a NEW BEGINNING of nations was promised of GOD to Abraham, (GENESIS
17:1-5).
8 times Rebekah is mentioned as “wife” to Isaac in GENESIS 24. There are many other
8’s mentioned in the Bible. 8 by itself is found 80 times in scripture. I will leave you with this one
final thought on the number 8: How many authors were given to us to write the New Testament,
stories about the NEW BIRTH, the NEW CREATION, NEW BEGINNING, and the
RESURRECTION? Eight - Matthew, Mark, Luke (2 books), John (5 books), Paul (14 books),
James, Peter (2 books) and Jude.

all manner of precious stones (verse 19), and the eighth foundation was beryl (verse 20). So, we
see that Beryl is mentioned as the eighth foundation stone of the city referred to as the bride, the
Lamb’s wife. This is one more example of how the number eight then points us to the BRIDE OF
CHRIST, and BRIDE OF CHRIST, and as such is a number for the BRIDE OF CHRIST.
We should then expect to see the BRIDE OF CHRIST with the beryl.
THE SONG OF SOLOMON is another picture that we have in scripture of the Christ and His
Bride. Myrrh is mentioned 8 times in the SONG OF SOLOMON. (17 times in total in scripture).
See SONG OF SOLOMON 1:13; 3:6; 4:6; 4:14; 5:1; 5:5 (used twice); and 5:13
Sister Alice S. Mooneyhan (who has long since gone to be with the Lord) notes this of
myrrh in her study notes on the SONG OF SOLOMON. Myrrh is always connected with sorrow
and suffering. It seems to have been a custom of the women of that time (of the SONG OF
SOLOMON) to carry a bundle of myrrh between the breasts - to hang it around the neck with a
chain and wear it as a token of suffering. This is what it means to us -- suffering with Christ. We
learn to welcome this because suffering for Christ brings great good into our lives. We remember
when the disciples were persecuted for Jesus’ sake, they rejoiced because “they were counted
worthy to suffer shame for His Name” - ACTS 5:41. The Apostle Paul said, “I take pleasure in
infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake” – II
CORINTHIANS 12:10.
Those Saints that are truly running for the prize of the high calling in Christ Jesus go on through
“sufferings” (if need be), to become full overcomers. We say “if need be” quoting from 1 PETER
1:6-9 where we again read of suffering for Jesus’ sake. 1 PETTER 1:6 Wherein ye greatly rejoice,
though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: 7 That the
trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with
fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: 8 Whom
having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy
unspeakable and full of glory: 9 Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
Two other of the seventeen scriptures that mention myrrh, in addition to the eight found in
SONG OF SOLOMON, also point us to the BRIDE OF CHRIST. One is found in the book of
ESTHER (chapter 2:12). Esther, the future queen in verse 2:12, herself is a type of the BRIDE OF
CHRIST. The other scripture that mentions myrrh and is closely connected to the story of the
BRIDEO F CHRIST is PSALMS 45, (see verse 8).
There are eight women mentioned in ROMANS 16. In studying the meaning of these eight
women’s names we find qualities that will also be found in the BRIDE OF CHRIST.
The first woman mentioned in ROMANS 16 is Phebe. ROMANS 16:1 I commend unto
you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea: … Her name means
“shinning” or “radiant one.” She speaks of the BRIDE CF CHRIST who will “radiate” the glory
of Christ or the glory of God. If you look up the word “servant” here in ROMANS 16:1 you will
find that it refers to an attendant, a minister, or a deacon, and is always used of Paul in reference
to a minister or a deacon. In this case Phebe was a deaconess. Cenchrea was the seaport of Corinth
from whence Paul had sailed in ACIS 18:18. Cenchrea means “small, like a millet seed,” which
also was a grain abounding there. Note what the Apostle Paul has to say of Phebe in ROMANS
16:2 That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever
business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also. The
word “succourer” used here this one time in scripture means: a female guardian, protectress,
patroness, caring for the affairs of others and aiding them with her resources. Brother Copley also
notes that word “succourer” means “a first rank protectress.” Brother Copley further notes that
14
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
Phebe was not ashamed to minister to a little flock. And in doing so she ministered unto many,
including the Apostle Paul. She was “radiant” because of an inward glory and possessed the Spirit
of Christ found in HEBREWS 2:18 -- For in that he himself bath suffered being tempted, he is
able to succour (help) them that are tempted. Brother Copley concludes his comments on Phebe
by stating: “Phebe always shares with Christ in His service and suffering here and will share with
Him in His radiant glory hereafter.”
The second woman mentioned in ROMANS 16 is Priscilla the wife of Aquila. ROMANS
16:3 Greet Priscilla and Aquila my helpers in Christ Jesus: 4 Who have for my life laid down their
own necks: unto whom not only I give thanks, but also all the then churches of the Gentiles. 5
Likewise greet the church that is in their house. Priscilla is mentioned five (GRACE} times in
scripture as Priscilla (ACTS 18:2; 18:18; 18:26, ROMANS 16:3 and I CORINTHIANS 16:19) and
one (GOD) time as Prisca (II TIMOTHY 4:19). She is always mentioned with her husband Aquila,
who according to ACTS 18:3 was a tent maker like the Apostle Paul. Hours Paul and Aquila spent
together in their craft, and at the same time they talked about the Lord. ACTS 18:3 further tells us
that Paul stayed with Aquila and Priscilla, and as a result they learned Paul’s gospel firsthand.
Priscilla’s name means “ancient one:’ and as such she shows the character of God the Ancient One
or the Ancient of days spoken of in DANIEL 7:9; 7:13; and 7:22. Her overcoming quality was that
she was willing to lay down her neck for the gospel, and by doing so she was gaining Christ as her
eternal Bridegroom.
The third women mentioned in ROMANS 16 is Mary, found in verse 6 Greet Mary, who
bestowed much labour on us. Brother Copley calls her “the exalted,” and Brother Hawkins notes
that her name means “bitter,” It speaks to us of the “bitter” suffering experiences that the full
overcomer will have in this life if they are to attain to being “exalted” with Christ and reign with
him. Note that Paul says Mary bestowed much labour on us. All of these women mentioned so far
were co-laborers together with Christ (1 CORINTHIANS 3:9).
Next in ROMANS 16:7 we read of Junia. ROMANS 16:7 Salute Andronicus and Junia,
my kinsmen, and my fellowprisoners, who are of note among the apostles, who also were in Christ
before me. Junia means “youthful” and speaks to the vibrancy of the Bridal company. She is not
old and ready to pass away but rather her strength is renewed like the eagles, for she trusts in the
Lord. ISAIAH 40:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall
mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not
faint. She was willing to suffer with Christ and became a fellowprisoner with the Apostle Paul
somewhere along the way. The kind of suffering that she went through Brother Copley notes is
first rank suffering.
The fifth woman mentioned in ROMANS 16 is Tryphena. Her name means “luxurious.”
She shows that the Bride of Christ has learned to flourish and grow fat feeding on the word of
God, feeding on Christ. JOHN 6:57 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so
he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.
Tryphosa is mentioned right along with Tryphena. ROMANS 16:12 Salute Tryphena and
Tryphosa, who labour in the Lord. Tryphosa’s name means “illuminating,” which exactly is what
the Bride of Christ will be, illuminating to those around her. EPHESIANS 5:8 For ye were
sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: The Bride of Christ
displays the light in this old world more than any other company. PHILIPPIANS 2:14 Do all things
without murmurings and disputing’s: 15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God,
without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in
15
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
the world; 16 Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not
run in vain, neither laboured in vain.
ROMANS 16:12 ...Salute the beloved Persis, which laboured much in the Lord. Persis “one
who divides.” She has learned to separate the flesh from the spirit, the worldliness from the spirit.
2 TIMOTHY 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be
ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Julia is mentioned in ROMANS 16:15. Julia means “downy,” which speaks hints to us of
the downy dove, or of the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Note the following scriptures:
MATTHEW 3:16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo,
the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and
lighting upon him: MARK 1:10 And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens
opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him: LUKE 3:22 And the Holy Ghost
descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said,
Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased. JOHN 1:32 And John bare record, saying, I
saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. SONG OF SOLOMON
1:15 Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair; thou hast doves’ eyes. ...2:12 The flowers
appear on the earth; the time of the singing birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in
our ... 2:14 O my dove, that art the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs, let me see
thy voice, and thy countenance is comely. …4:1 Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art
fair; thou hast doves’ eyes within thy Jocks: thy hair is as a flock of goats, that appear from mount
Gilead. ...5:2 I sleep, but my heart waketh: it is the voice of my beloved that knocketh, saying,
Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled: for my head is filled with dew, and my
locks with the drops of the night. ...6:9 My dove, undefiled is but one; she is the only one of her
mother, is the choice one her that bare her. The daughters saw her, and blessed her; yea, the
queens and the concubines, and they praised her.
No doubt in your studies of the word of God you will come across some other series of
“eight’s,” which will point you to one of the following: NEW CREATION; NEW BIRTH; NEW
BEGINNING; RESURRECTION and the BRIDE OF CHRIST. Should your discovery fall into
the meaning pointing to the BRIDE OF CHRIST, it will become something extra special to you.
~9~
Nine is the final single digit in our numbers. Nine speaks of finality and of divine
completeness from the LORD.
One of the meanings of the number three showed that three was a number of the HOLY
SPIRIT. The number 9 is 3X3, thus showing that the final touches on an overcoming Christian life
can only be divinely completed by the HOLY SPIRIT. Let’s see how the number nine brings this
out. There are nine gifts of the HOLY SPIRIT found in I CORINTHIAN1S 2:8-10; namely (I
CORINTHIANS 12:7-10) …But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit
withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the (1) word of wisdom; to another the (2) word of
knowledge by the same Spirit to another (3) faith by the same Spirit; to another the (4) gifts of
healing by the same Spirit; to another the (5) working of miracles; to another (6) prophecy; to
another, (7) discerning of spirits; to another (8) divers kinds of tongues; to another (9) the
interpretation of tongues.” GAIATIANS 5:22-23 gives us the nine-fold fruit of the SPIRIT. “But
the fruit of the Spirit is (1)1ove, (2) joy, (3) peace, (4) 1ong suffering, (5) gentleness, (6) goodness,
(7) faith, (8) meekness, (9) temperance: against such there is no law.” One more example showing
that the number nine is connected with the Holy Spirit is found in the nine offices of the Holy
16
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
Spirit. (1) The Holy Spirit is the reprover, the convicter of sin, JOHN 16:8-11, (2) the Holy Spirit
is the agent of the new birth, JOHN 3:5 and 8, (3) the Holy Spirit is a witness to sonship, ROMANS
8:16, (4) the Holy Spirit is the Comforter, JOHN 14:26, (5) the Holy Spirit is our Guide and
Teacher into all the truth, JOHN 16:13 and 14:26, (6) the Holy Spirit is a director of ministers,
ACTS 13:24, 16:6-7 plus other scriptures, (7) the Holy Spirit is an inspirer of scriptures, II
TIMOTHY 3:16, II PETER 1:20-21, ACTS 1:16, (8) the Holy Spirit is the distributor of nine gifts
as we read in I CORINTHIAN 12. Finally, the 9th and probably the most important office of the
Holy Spirit, especially to the overcomer, and to those who want to be in the Bride of Christ, is the
fact that the Holy Spirit is the one who (9) calls and prepares the bride. There are many scriptures
which point out this fact, and we could spend hours studying them, and we may do so in future
Sunday School lessons if the LORD leads, but for now I will refer you to GENESIS 24 and the
eldest servant of Abraham, which figures the Holy Spirit in that chapter, who was sent to take a
bride for Isaac. On your own study GENESIS 24 and see how Abraham’s eldest servant prepared
a bride for Isaac in this chapter.
Another of the final touches of an overcoming Christian that can only be completed by the
Holy Spirit is love, ROMANS 5:5. In I CORINTHIANS 13 we find the Greek word for love,
(charity), 9 times.
At the ninth hour Jesus completed his work on the cross, MARK 15:34-36 and JOHN
19:30. One author wrote: “It is wonderful to “rest” in the ‘‘finished’’ work of the cross as to our
salvation in Christ.’’ We find this rest mentioned 9 times in HEBREWS 4:1-11.
One last “nine” before we move on, in JOSHUA 6 we find Israel getting a divine and
complete victory over Jericho. In the 6th chapter we find “seven” (perfection), mentioned 9 times.
Do you see how the Holy Spirit was a part of this divinely complete victory?
The number nine is used 49 times in the Bible. As you study this number, I think you will
see many examples of finality, and of divine completeness from the Lord by the Holy Spirit.
~ 10 ~
The number 10 is used 242 times in the Bible, plus the times we find ten things mentioned
together. In studying the number ten you will notice that the underlying theme behind this number
is that of responsibility. Webster defines responsibility as the quality of being responsible, in other
words, answerable or accountable for one’s actions. Furthermore, this responsibility associated
with the number ten is limited to one’s ability, that is a being able or having power to do something
physical or mental, (Webster). In other words, ten is the number of RESPONSIBILITY
ACCORDING TO ABILITY. The Christians ability is only limited by his faith, for “without faith
it is impossible to please” God, and the “just live by faith”, HEBREWS 11:6 and 10:8.
In thinking of the number ten the first thing your mind probably goes to is the ten
commandments, the basis of the law. Why were the ten commandments given, for no man ever
was able to keep them? The answer -- God gave Israel the ten commandments to prove them and
to test them, and to show them their utter weakness, and that they needed to depend on Him. Think
of the law of Moses as the vehicle to show one’s responsibility according to ability; the law having
the ability to condemn, and Christ having the ability to save. The Apostle Paul before being saved
came the closest of anyone to keeping the law, PHILIPPIANS 3:4-6, but his responsibility in the
law was tested on the road to Damascus, and Paul realized that he was the chief of sinners, I
TIMOTHY 1:15-16. What Paul wrote us in GALATIANS 3:24 and ROMANS 10:4 sums up our
responsibility according to ability concerning the law and the ten commandments; GALATIANS
3:24 and ROMANS 10:4.
17
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
In GENESIS 1 we read “God said,” ten times, and note that every time ‘‘God Said”
something in GENESIS 1, he took the responsibility to preform what he said according to his
infinite ability. God’s responsibility is still to do what he says, our responsibility as Christians is
just to believe that he will do it.
In DANIEL 1 we read of four Hebrew children, responsible children, who knew their
responsibility was to trust God and his ability, and not the king, and for ten days they ate pulse
(vegetables) and drank water and were found “ten times better” than those that followed the king’s
orders; DANIEL 1:6-20.
There were ten plagues upon Egypt and Pharaoh and his kingdom in EXODUS 7-12, God
holding them responsible for rejecting His word and will. The tenth plague was death to all the
firstborn in the land of Egypt who failed to apply the blood to his house.
In EZEKIEL 28:13 we find that Satan had “every precious stone” as his covering. Ten
kinds of stones are named showing that Satan was covered with responsibility, EZEKIEL 28:13.
In LUKE 19:11-27 we find the parable of the ten servants and the ten pounds, showing in
type that the ten servants were responsible to God of the ten pounds, LUKE 19:11-27.
In these few examples concerning the number ten we have tried to show that ten is the
number of RESPONSIBILITYACCORDINTG TO ABILITY. Our responsibility as man is to
believe in God, and his ability, thus in so doing God becomes responsible to man. ROMANS 8:38-
39 shows ten things that are powerless to love of God: ROMANS 8:38-39. In REVELATION3:7-
13 we find Jesus saying “I” ten times to the church at Philadelphia, showing His responsibility to
the overcomer. In REVELATION 3:14-22 we again find Jesus saying “I” 10 ten times, this time
holding them responsible for unbelief, if that is the way they choose; REVELATION 3:14-22.
Again, the number ten is the number of RESPONSIBILLITY ACCORDING TO
ABILITY.

Several different authors have come up with several different meanings for the number
eleven. The one word which sums up the meaning of the number eleven the best is
INSUFFICIENCY, meaning a number which shows a lack of sufficiency or a deficiency. The
number eleven by itself is found 24 times in the Bible, plus, of course the number of times we find
eleven things mentioned together. In showing the meaning of the number eleven, we get a good
introduction to the number twelve.
Again, we go to GENESIS for the origins of the meaning of the number eleven. We
previously learned that after the flood there were eight souls saved by water for a new beginning,
and by Noah’s three sons “was the whole earth overspread” (GENESIS 9:19). To say the least,
Ham, one of Noah’s sons, saw his father in an insufficient state, for Ham “saw the nakedness of
his father, and told his two brethren without” (GENESIS 9:22). Because of this event Noah
pronounced a curse on Ham, and the fact that he had carried on this INSUFFICIENCY, through
his son Canaan: GENESIS 9:25 “Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his
brethren.” GENESIS 10:15-18 shows us that Canaan had eleven sons: “(1) Sidon his firstborn, and
(2) Heth, and the (3) Jebusite, and the (4) Amorite, and the (5) Girgasite, and the (6) Hivite, and
the, (7) Arkite, and the (8) Sinite, and the (9) Arvadite, and the (10) Zemarlte, and the (11)
Hamathite: ‘‘. Note this point: through these sons of Canaan, we have the origins in type of the
tendencies of the flesh. We are in the flesh, at best, INSUFFICIENT. The apostle Paul even noted
this fact in II CORINTHIAN 3:5, (paraphrased): “We are not sufficient of ourselves to think
anything as of ourselves.’’ In order to be sufficient, that is to have sufficiency, we need to have
18
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
our trust and faith in God and his sufficiency. Again, Paul recognized this and concluded II
CORINTHIANS 3:5 by stating: “our sufficiency is of God.” In GENESIS 17:8 God, who cannot
lie, promised Abraham to give Abraham and his seed, “all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting
possession; and I will be their God.” Has this happened fully yet?
Also, when we studied the number 8, we found that through Rebekah we had a new
beginning for two nations: GENESIS 25:23-34. Simply put, Esau despised his birthright and gave
up his birthright because he did not believe God, HEBREWS 12:16-17; ROMANS 9:6-13. How
does the number eleven and INSUFFICIENCY tie in with Esau? There are eleven Duke of Esau,
who is Edom, recorded in GENESIS 36:40-43. Again, eleven is a. number showing insufficiency.
(DEUTERONOMY 23:7).
In the first chapter of ACTS, we find an INSUFFICIENT number of Apostles, (11 listed in
verse 13), so one more was chosen (Matthias), and was numbered with the eleven. Note in
MATTHEW 10:2-4 we find the names of the twelve kingdom apostles. The eleventh one
mentioned is. ‘‘Simon the Canaanite.”
In studying EXODUS 14-17 and NUMBERS 33 you will find that the children of Israel
had only been away from the land of Egypt less than three months when they found themselves at
Horeb. DEUTERONOMY 1:19 summarized the next part of their journey, DEUTERONOMY
1:19, NUMBERS 13 & 14 goes into depth as to what happened at Kadesh-Barnea,
DEUTERONOMY 1:20-26 summarizes those events. At Kadesh-Barnea the children of Israel in
their unbelief counted GOD as INSUFFICIENT to meet their needs. DEUTERONOMY 2:14
summarizes God’s judgement on Israel for their unbelief at Kadesh-Barnea. Now go back to
DEUTERONOMY 1:2 and see Israel’s INSUFFICIENCY in the number eleven,
DEUTERONOMY 1:2.
With these few examples of the number eleven we have tried to show that eleven is a
number showing a deficiency, or a lack of sufficiency. In other words, eleven is a number of
INSUFFICIENCY.
~12 ~
We mentioned in introducing the number eleven that it could be used as a good introduction
to the number 12. Here’s how that is. In looking at the generations of Noah we found his son Ham
to be the father of Canaan, of whom we found eleven sons, to whom, a servant of servants they
were to be unto his brethren (GENESIS 9:25). In GENESIS 9:26 we find another of Noah’s son’s,
Shem: “Blessed be the Lord God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant” (GENESIS 9:26).
There are twelve generations from Shem to Jacob. Rebekah, whom the Lord told had two nations
in her womb, had twin boys, Esau the oldest, who is Edom (GENESIS 36:1), and Jacob, who
became Israel (GENESIS 32:28). Israel (Jacob) had twelve sons (GENESIS 35:22). In ACTS 1 we
found eleven apostles, and the choice of Matthias to become the twelfth as a replacement of Judas
Iscariot. In the above examples we see that the number twelve has a connection with Israel, in fact
the number twelve is a signature of the kingdom of Israel, God’s earthly kingdom. We define the
number twelve as the number of DIVINE GOVERNMENT PERFECTION. In other words when
we find a government administration of some kind related to Israel in the Bible, we find connected
to it the number twelve. The number twelve is used 187 times in the Bible.
There were twelve tribes of Israel listed several times in scripture, the original list is found
in GENESIS 49; the twelve tribes being named for the twelve sons of Jacob (Israel). (If you want
an interesting study, compare the 12 tribes of Israel listed in GENESIS 49 with the 12 tribes of
Israel listed in REVEIATION 7:4-8 and see how they differ, then go and research why they differ).
19
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
From Israel’s twelve sons came the twelve tribes of Israel, each tribe having a leader, thus the
foundations for Israel’s government as God ordered it. In NUMBERS 1:5-16 we find twelve
princes named over the twelve tribes of Israel. In NUMBERS 13:1-16 we find a list of the twelve
spies sent to search the land of Canaan. In EXODUS 28 we have the pattern for the priest’s holy
garments, where we find the names of the twelve children of Israel graven on two onyx stones; we
also find twelve different stones each with a name of the twelve children of Israel; EXODUS 28:1-
21. As you can see all of these twelves mentioned so far are related to Israel, and of these have
connection with rulership or government, specifically the way God ordained it for Israel. Twelve
is the number of DIVINE GOVERNMENT PERFECTION.
In EXODUS 15:27 we find that shortly after leaving Egypt the children of Israel came to
Elim, where there were twelve wells of water, EXODUS 15:27. There are two memorials of twelve
stones each found in JOSHUA 4. Elijah built an altar of twelve stones and poured twelve barrels
of water over it, to prove to Israel that the Lord, he is God: I KINGS 18:30-40. Solomon had twelve
officers over all Israel, I KINGS 4:7. There are twelve months in a year.
Jesus chose twelve disciples, MATTHEW 10:1-4, (also ACTS 1). When Peter asked the
Lord what the apostles reward was for following him Jesus answered in MATTHEW 19:28. Here
I think you can plainly see that twelve is a governmental number concerning Israel, and that it is a
DIVINE number of GOVERNMENT PERFECTION.
There are recorded for us in Old Testament scripture twelve people anointed for various
kinds of governmental duties. Five were priests and seven were kings. Aaron, and his four sons
(Nadab, Abihu, Eleazer, and Ithamar), EXODUS 28:39-41, (the sons listed in EXODUS 6:23).
The seven kings: Saul (I SAMUEL10:1), David (I SAMUEL16:13), Absalom (II SAMUEL
19:10), Solomon (I KINGS 1:39), Jehu (II KINGS 9:6), Joash (II KINGS 11:12), Jehoahaz (II
KINGS 23:30).
In REVELATION we find the number twelve used 22 times. Some of these twelves are
found in REVELATION 21, and as we read some verses from this chapter, note how everything
in God’s city is perfectly governed and how twelve shows up as the number of DIVINE
GOVERNMENT PERFECTION, REVELATION 21:9-27.
~ 13 ~
For the most part thirteen is the number of REBELLION in the scriptures. Even in our
daily lives we find the number thirteen connected to superstition, which is also connected with
REBELLION to ward God. For example, go into a tall building and try to go to the 13th floor; try
to sit in the 13th row of an airplane, try to get a hotel room with the number 13 in it and you will
find that it is almost impossible. The list goes on concerning the evidence that thirteen is a number
associated with REBELLION. REBELLION is defined by Webster as a defiance of, or opposition
to any authority or control. I SAMUEL 15:23 states, for REBELLION is as the sin of witchcraft,
…” In GENESIS 14:4 we read this statement…”in the thirteenth year they rebelled.” In MARK
7:20-23 Jesus lists thirteen evil things which come from within the heart of men and defile the
man, a list which shows REBELLION, MARK 7:20-23.
In NUMBERS we find listed the 12 tribes of Israel, and in verse 47 we find that “the Levites
after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them”. If the Levites were numbered
among the other 12 tribes, then we would have 13 tribes. The reason that the tribe of Levi was not
numbered among the other 12 tribes is found in NUMBERS 1:47-.54. In NUMBERS 31, 14 and
especially 16 we see the REBELLION of Israel, and their murmuring against God, Moses, and
Aaron. In NUMBERS 17 we find 13 rods brought before the Lord, and Aaron’s rod budded,
20
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
NUMBERS 17:1-9. Now especially note in verse 10 of NUMBERS 17 how the thirteenth rod,
(Aaron’s rod), is used in connection with REBELLION, NUMBERS 17:10.
In REVEIATION the “dragon”, “that old serpent, which is the devil, and
Satan,” is mentioned as the “dragon” thirteen times. Wasn’t he the first to show defiance and
opposition to any authority, specifically God? In other words, Satan was the first rebel, and the
founder of REBELLION.
The Apostle Paul, before being saved, before he was the Apostle Paul, was in REBELLION
toward God and had many Christians put in prison, (and it seems lived a trial free life). After Paul
was saved there were others which took his former place and were REBELLIOUS towards God
and the gospel Paul now preached. These REBELLIOUS people had Paul put in prison. Paul refers
of his “bonds” thirteen times in his epistles. Do you see how the Holy Spirit connects REBELLION
in this usage of the term “bonds” related to Paul’s life,
In speaking to the REBELLIOUS church of Thyatira in REVELATION: 2:18-29, we find
the LORD making thirteen declarations of what he will do.
~ 14 ~
The number 14 speaks of DELIVERANCE or SALVATION and is used 26 times in
the Bible.
In EXODUS 12:6 we find the Passover lamb was to be kept until the fourteenth day. The
Passover lamb was then to be slain, and the blood applied to the door,
EXODUS 12:12-13. That fourteenth night the Lord DELIVERED Israel out of Egypt. I
CORINTHIANS 5:7 states, … “Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us,” in other words, Jesus is
our Saviour and our Deliverer. JOHN 1:29. Again, the number 14 speaks of DELIVERANCE or
SALVATION.
Speaking of Jesus our Saviour and our Deliverer, MATTHEW 1:1 7 mentions in summary
the generations of Christ, and in this verse, we find fourteen mentioned 3 times, MATTHEW 1:17.
In ACTS 27 we find the Apostle Paul along with 275 other souls caught in a storm and
hopelessly lost on a helpless ship somewhere on the Mediterranean Sea. ACTS 27:21-25 shows
the Apostle Paul speaking of God’s DELIVERANCE in this dreary situation. ACTS 27:27 shows
us that on the 14th night the 276 souls on this ship began to realize that their DELIVERANCE
from this situation was at hand, ACTS 27:27. ACTS 27:33-37 shows us the early hours of the 14th
day where preparations were made to realize this DELIVERANCE ACTS 27:33-37. ACTS 27:44
shows that all 276 souls were saved from the sea, a divine DELIVERANCE, … “And so it came
to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.”
In II CORINTHIANS 12:1-4 we find that Paul mentions about a time 14 years past when
a man in Christ was delivered up into the third heaven. We assume that Paul was referring to
himself during the time found in ACTS 14:19-20, where after being stoned at Lystra, Paul was
miraculously DELIVERED up, and continued preaching his message of SALVATION.
In GALATIANS 2:1 we find that “fourteen years after” Paul had last been in Jerusalem,
that he returned again, this time for the now famous conference discussed in ACTS 15, which
concerned mainly the question of SALVATION. In this 15th chapter of ACTS Paul’s name is
mentioned for the 14th time in scripture as Paul.
14 is the number of DELIVERANCE or SALVATION.

The number 15 is associated with REST and is found 24 times in the Bible.
We find mentioned in scripture that three times a year Israel rested on the 15th day of the
month. LEVITICUS 23:6-7, LEVITICUS 23:34-35, and ESTHER 9:20-22.
In ACTS 27:27-29 we find Paul’s ship anchored for the first time in two weeks, anchored
in 15 fathoms of water, where they RESTED (as it were) until day. Similarly in GENESIS 7:20
we find Noah’s ark RESTING (as it were) 15 cubits above land.
One more example showing that 15 is a number connected with rest is found in RUTH 3:1,
where we find Naomi’s name mentioned for the 15th time, RUTH 3:1.
~ 16 ~
Some numbers are harder to define than others due to the fact that there are fewer examples
in scripture of some numbers, and their meaning. Sixteen is one of those numbers. The number
sixteen is associated with LOVE, and there are few scriptures to bear this out.
In I CORINTHIANS 13, (the LOVE chapter), in verses 4-8 we find 16 things said about
LOVE: I CORINTHIANS 13:4-8.
The sixteenth time we find Paul’s name as Paul standing alone and not in reference to Saul
is in ACTS 15:25, where he is referred to as beloved, a name associated with LOVE.
Recall that one of the meanings of the number 8 was NEW BIRTH. I JOHN 5:1 can be
paraphrased this way; one who is BORN AGAIN LOVETH one who is BORN AGAIN, 8 + 8 =
16. (Read I JOHN where you will find LOVE mentioned several times).
The number 16 is found 23 times in scripture and is associated with LOVE.
~ 17 ~
Seventeen is the seventh prime number, thus showing something to do with perfection or
completeness. The number seventeen is only found ten times in scripture. There are, however,
numerous examples of 17 found in the Bible. Seventeen is a number which shows VICTORY IN
CHRIST JESUS.
We know from LEVITICUS 23:5 (and other scriptures) that “the fourteenth day of the first
month at even is the LORD’s Passover. “We also know that the Jews count time as God did, that
being from evening until the next evening, (sunset to sunset) as being a day, (GENESIS 1:5). With
these thoughts in mind, we know that the last Passover attended by Jesus is recorded in LUKE
22:13-20, which reckoning time in the Jewish fashion was on the 14th of the month. Further we
know from studying several scriptures that before the next evening Jesus was crucified and had
“yielded up the ghost” (MATTHEW 27:50), “about the ninth hour” (MATTHEW 27:46), this still
on the 14th of the month reckoned on the Jewish calendar. Jesus was buried on that same day,
JOHN 19:38-42 tells us. “He rose again the third day according to the scriptures”, I
CORINTHIANS 15:4. In doing a little math we can see that Jesus arose from the dead on the 17th
(according to the Jewish calendar), (JOHN 20:1-9), In other words, on the seventeenth, Jesus
became VICTORIOUS over the grave and death. Again, seventeen is a number which shows
VICTORY IN CHRIST JESUS.
Similarly in the Old Testament we have the story of the children of Israel getting a complete
VICTORY over the Egyptians, who were destroyed in the midst of the Red Sea. EXODUS 14:13-
31 clearly points out that it was the LORD who gave the VICTORY to the children of Israel over
the Egyptians, EXODUS 14:13-31. What does this have to do with the number seventeen? On
22
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
your own study the 2-14th chapters of EXODUS, and compare the timetable found in summary in
NUMBERS 33:5-8, and I think you will find the following: The children of Israel were thrust out
of Egypt on a “night to be much observed unto the Lord for bringing them out from the land of
Egypt”, the night of the Passover (the 14th of the month). Israel journeyed from Ramses to Succoth
on the 14th, (reckoned in Jewish time, sunset to sunset). Leaving Succoth on the 15th they came
to Etham, where they were on the 16th. The night of the 17th brought them before the Red Sea at
Pi-hahiroth, where they passed “upon dry land in the midst of the sea,” as we read earlier in
EXODUS 14. This VICTORY from the Lord then occurred on the 17th, In EXODUS 15:1-21 the
children of Israel sang a song of VICTORY, after having safely passed through the red sea and
being delivered from the Egyptians.
The eight souls that were saved by water on the ark got the VICTORY through the Lord
over the flood. GENESIS 7:11 and 8:4. Note here also that five months after it started raining the
ark rested upon the mountains of Ararat, again showing the number 5 (grace) in this situation.
In Joseph’s life we find a type in picture of Jesus. In GENESIS 37 we find that Joseph told
a dream to his brethren in which he spoke of a time when he would have VICTORY over his
brethren. GENESIS 37:2 tells us that Joseph was 17 years old at that time. Jacob, (Israel) got to
see his favorite son, Joseph, for the first seventeen years of his life. Time passes. Joseph’s dream
came true, and he had the VICTORY over his brethren, and they came to live with him in Egypt.
Note that Jacob, (Israel), got to again see his favorite son, Joseph, seventeen years, GENESIS
47:28. Seventeen is a number which shows VICTORY in CHRIST JESUS.
In JOSHUA 24, Joshua recalls the history of Israel, and what God had brought them
through up until that point in time. In telling this story of VICTORYs from the Lord, Joshua refers
to seventeen “I’s” recounting statements from the Lord.
In ROMANS 8:35-39 there are 17 things named which are unable to separate us from the
love of Christ; they are (l) tribulation, (2) distress, (J) persecution, (4) famine, (5) nakedness, (6)
peril, (7) sword, (8) death, (9) 1ife, (10) angels, (11) principalities, (12) powers, (13) things present,
(14) things to come, (15) height, (16) depth, (17) nor any other creature, shall be able to separate
us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Seventeen is a number which shows VICTORY in CHRIST JESUS.

The number 18 is found 22 times in the Bible and stands for BONDAGE.
Twice in JUDGES we find Israel in BONDAGE to their enemies 18 years. JUDGES 3:14
and 10:7-8.
In ACTS 7, Stephen, among other things, summarizes the history of Israel. In verses 6 &
7 Stephen refers to Israel’s BONDAGE in Egypt, ACTS 7:6-7. Eighteen times is this Egyptian
BONDAGE of Israel referred to in the Old Testament:
(1) GENESIS 15:13-14 (10) EXODUS 20:2
(2) EXODUS 1:14 (11) DEUTERONOMY 5:6
(3) EXODUS 2:23 (12) DEUTERONOMY 6:12

The number 19 is found three times in scripture and shows FAITH. Nineteen is the eighth
prime number. Recall that one of the meanings of the number eight was NEW BIRTH.
EPHESIANS 2:8.
HEBREWS 11 we refer to as the chapter concerning the Old Testament worthies of
FAITH. Interesting enough, there are 17 individuals and 2 groups of people mentioned in
connection with FAITH in this chapter, making 19 total. They are,
(1) Abel - verse 4 (11) Gideon - verse 32
(2) Enoch - verse 5 (12) Barak - verse J2
(3) Noah - verse 7 (13) Samson - verse J2
(4) Sara - verse 11 (14) Jephthae - verse :32
(5) Abraham - verses 8-10, 17-19 (15) David - verse 32
(6) Isaac - verse 20 (16) Samuel - verse 32
(7) Jacob - verse 21 (17) Joshua - implied in verse 3O
(8) Joseph - verse 22 (18) The prophets - verses 32-34
(9) Moses - verses 23-28 (19) Others - verses 35-39
(10) Rahab - verse 31
(While we are here in the 11th chapter of Hebrews, note the New Testament worthies of
faith found in this chapter: “We” in verse 3 and “us” in verse 40).
In ROMANS 3:21-5:21 we find Paul’s discussion on justification by FAITH. In this
portion the word FAITH is found 19 times.
Who was Paul’s most FAITHful friend? (Besides Jesus). A strong argument can be made
for both Luke and Timothy. In your Strong’s Concordance you will find Timotheus mentioned 19
times. We have a record of more epistles being written to this one man by Paul than anyone else,
(2). In his first epistle to Timothy, Paul writes to “Timothy, my own son in the FAITH”, (1:2), to
fight the good of FAITH”, (6:12). In total Paul uses the word FAITH 19 times in I TIMOTHY.
19 is a number that shows FAITH.

As we continue our study of the meaning of different numbers in the Bible, it becomes
obvious that many numbers have more than one meaning, some of which we may not even know.
Then some numbers meanings seem hard to find. The number twenty seems to be one of these
harder numbers to define in the fact that there are fewer examples to out than was the case with
previous numbers. One of the meanings of the number twenty is REDEMPTION. Webster
Dictionary defines REDEMPTION as “a buying back,” or a “release from sin.” GALATIANS
3:13; I PETER 1:18-19; I CORINTHIANS 6:20, 7:2.
Boaz, in the book of RUTH, pictures a type of Christ. He was the kinsman-redeemer who
redeemed the properties that was Elimelech’s, the dead husband of Naomi, and purchased Ruth to
24
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
be his wife, RUTH 4:1-10. Boaz’s name is mentioned twenty times in the book of RUTH. Also,
twenty different people are mentioned in RUTH.
Keeping in mind one of the meanings of REDEMPTION as “a buying back”, let’s consider
the story of Jacob and Rachel. “Jacob loved Rachel” (GENESIS 29:18) and ended up working
twenty years in the household of Laban to fulfill his obligation to Laban for the REDEMPTION
of Rachel, GENESIS 31:41.
Another meaning of REDEMPTION Is ‘‘something that redeems”, that is, to set free by
paying a price. With this thought in mind here are two more examples of’ REDEMPTION being
tied to the number twenty. The only Israelites allowed to go in and possess the land of Canaan,
besides Caleb and Joshua, of the ones at Kadesh-Barnea, were the children under twenty years old;
in other words, those children of Israel under twenty years old were at a later date were set free
from the wilderness (REDEMPTION). In JUDGES 4, twenty years elapsed before the children of
Israel were set free (REDEMPTION) from the oppression of Jabin.
Silver also is a symbol of REDEMPTION. With this thought also in mind, coupled with
the number twenty also meaning REDEMPTION, let’s read the following scriptures: EXODUS
30:11-14; 38:25-26; 26:18-20 and 27:9 -11.
Twenty is a number showing REDEMPTION and is found 288 times in the Bible.

I couldn’t find the number twenty-one mentioned by itself in the Bible. However, it is
obvious to me that the number twenty-one has a meaning, The number twenty-one is a number
associated with SIN; not that there are just twenty-one SINs, for obviously there are more, but
because of the following lists containing twenty-one things listed together do we conclude that one
of the meanings of the number twenty-one is associated with SIN.
In the Old Testament we find twenty-one places where SINs are recorded against Israel in
their journeys from Egypt to Caanan.
1. EXODUS 14:12 (the SINs found in this portion are unbelief, murmurings,
complaining, being despiteful, and being covetous of
Egypt)
3. EXODUS 16:1-3 (the SINs here again are murmuring, complaining against
God, being hateful, being bitter, again being covetous
of good-old-Egypt, and generally disbelieving the Lord)
5. EXODUS 16:21-29 (the SIN here was more of the same, unbelief, disobedience, and
rebellion)
6. EXODUS 17:1-4 (more of the same SINs are found here, murmurings,
complaining, chiding, more unbelief, and still being
covetous of Egypt)
25
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
7. EXODUS 32:1-9 (more of the same SINS are found here, plus corruption, idol
worship, unholiness, unthankfulness, and a hint of lovers of
pleasures more than lovers of God)
10. NUMBERS [Link] (the SIN here, more complaining, murmuring and unbelief)
11. NUMBERS 11:4-6,10-15, 18-23, 31-34 (the SINs here start with lust, then lead into unbelief,
covetousness, murmurings, complaining, etc.)
13. NUMBERS 14:1-11 (in this 13th listing of the SINS of Israel we see their rebellion, along
with their continued unbelief, murmurings, complaints and
bitterness)
14. NUMBERS 14:26-45 (their sin here shows their continued unbelief and rebellion the Lord)
16. NUMBERS 16:1-3, 19-35. (the SIN here was more rebellion, disobedience and
unbelief)
17. NUMBERS 16 :41-50 (the SIN here again murmurings and complaining)
18. NUMBERS 20:1-6 (the SIN here is the same as above, gripping, complaining,
murmuring and unbelief)
20. NUMBERS 21:4-9 (the sin here was found in verse 7, they spoke against the Lord and
against Moses)
In these twenty-one different places in Israel’s journey from Egypt to Canaan we have
found the times recorded for us where they sinned. This is one example that twenty-one is a number
associated with SIN.
In I KINGS 12:25-30 we find Jeroboam, king of Israel, making two golden calves, which
became objects of worship to the Israelites, I KINGS 12:15-3O. After this we have recorded for
us twenty-one references in I & II KINGS making this statement: that Jeroboam the son of Nebat
“made Israel to SIN”. These twenty-one verses are:
1. I KINGS 14:16 8. I KINGS 22:52 15. II KINGS 14:24

THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
~ 22 ~
The number 22 is a number associated with LIGHT.
Recall when we studied the number two, we found one of the things about the number two
was that it was connected to Jesus, in that Jesus was the second personality we find mentioned in
the trinity. In putting two and two side by side, we get 22, the number associated with LIGHT. The
following scriptures in JOHN all show that Jesus is the LIGHT of the world: JOHN 1:6-9; 8:12;
9:5 and 12:46.
In EPHESIANS 5:8 we find Paul writing to believers… “but now are ye LIGHT in the
LORD: walk as children of LIGHT.” Adding scripturally 8, (NEW BIRTH) + 14, (SALVATION)
= 22, (LIGHT).
What did the apostle Paul find in the way on the road to Damascus? Paul saw a LIGHT, a
LIGHT from heaven brighter that the noon day sun. The 22nd time we find the apostle Paul’s
former name (Saul) mentioned is in the 22nd chapter of ACTS, where he again recalls the day he
saw the LIGHT, (22); the day of his NEW BIRTH, (8) and SALVATION, (14).
In NUMBERS 3:39 we find 22 thousand Levites; NUMBERS 3:39. The job of the Levites,
simply put, was to do the Priestly work of the tabernacle, which included the ministry of LIGHT
unto the people.
In EXODUS 25:31-34 we find 22 bowls in the golden candlestick in the tabernacle; EXODUS
25:31-34. The candlestick with its seven lamps gave LIGHT. MATTHEW 5:14 -16.
The number 22 is associated with LIGHT.
27
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
~ 23 ~
The number 23 is the 9th prime number. In studying the number nine we found
that it was the FINAL single digit in our number system, and that one of the meanings of the
number 9 was that of FINALITY. We would expect, then, a related meaning in the number 23,
since 23 is the 9th prime number. The number 23 is associated with DEATH.
In GENESIS we have at least three examples showing the number 23 being associated with
DEATH. In GENESIS 7:23 we find Noah’s name mentioned for the 23rd time, (this includes the
two times his name is used in plural form.). Reading this verse, we see one example of how the
number 23 is associated with DEATH, GENESIS 7:23. In your Strong’s Concordance count the
23rd time you find Abraham mentioned, and the scripture will be GENESIS 19:27. Reading
GENESIS 19:24-28 we again see an example of how the number 23 is associated with DEATH,
GENESIS 19:24-28. The 23rd time we find Jacob’s name mentioned in both single and plural form,
is in GENESIS 27:42. Again this scripture shows another example of how the number 23 is
associated with DEATH, GENE3IS 27:42.
One of the best examples of the number 23 being associated with DEATH is found in
ROMANS 1:28-32, where we find one sentence containing 23 things in verses 29-31, and “that
they which commit such things are worthy of death,” ROMANS 1:28-32.
In ACTS 9:34 we find the 23rd time Peter’s name is mentioned in the book of ACTS. Right
after this it is mentioned that Tabitha, a woman full of good works and alms deeds, became sick
and died. By the time Peter’s name is mentioned 3 more times (for resurrection), Tabitha arose
and was presented alive, ACTS 9:34-41.
Concerning resurrection, the Apostle Paul gives us the most information. A great deal of
this information comes from the 15th chapter of I CORINTHIANS. In I CORINTHIANS 15 Paul
uses the word “resurrection” 4 times; the word “risen” 3 times; the word “raised” 10 times; the
word “rise” 4 times; and the word “rose” 2 times, for a total of 23, These 23 times those words
were used here shows us that the resurrection will bring out of the state of DEATH the believer in
a new body, On your own study again I CORINTHIANS 15, and see for yourself that these things
are so. For now, let’s read I CORINTHIANS 15 :20-26, 51-55, and I THESSALONIANS 4:1.3-
18.
The number 23 is a number associated with DEATH.
~ 24 ~
Quote from Brother Copley: “the figure twenty-four was the number of the PRIESTLY
courses under the old covenant.” In other words, 24 is a number associated with the
PRIESTHOOD.
In EXODUS 28:1 we find Aaron and his sons, Nadab, Abihu, Eleazer and Ithamar, whom
the Lord chose to minister unto the Lord in the PRIEST’s office, In I CHRONICLES 24:1-5 we
find 24 descendants of Aaron chosen to be governors of the sanctuary and of the house of God; I
CHRONICLES 24 :1-5. In this portion of scripture note that Ithamar had 8 sons, (8 = resurrection),
and Eleazar had 16 sons, (16 = love). We also have a resurrected High PRIEST (Jesus) who loved
us so much that he offered himself for us “one sacrifice for sins forever” and is now ‘‘sat down on
the right hand of God;” “wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto
God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.” (HEBREWS 10:12 and 7:25),
Jesus makes intercession for us 24 hours a day, ROMANS 8:34.
28
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
~ 25 ~
5 was the number of GRACE. 25 = 5 X 5; GRACE times GRACE. So, we would expect
the number 25 to be somehow connected with GRACE. The number 25 seems to have a value
equal to the FORGIVENESS O F SINS, and obviously the FORGIVENESS OF SINS is because
of GRACE. Paraphrasing EPHESIANS 2:8 ‘For by GRACE do we receive the FORGIVENESS
OF SINS through faith’.
JOHN J:16 contains 25 words, and those who have believed these 25 words have received
FORGIVENESS OF SINS.
In HEBREWS 7:25 we read of Jesus our High Priest: ‘‘Wherefore he is able also to save
them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for
them.’’ In COLOSSIANS 1:14 we read this of Jesus: “In whom we have redemption through his
blood, even THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.” Can you see how THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS
(25) follows the number 24, the number of the PRIESTHOOD? In other words THE
FORGIVENESS OF SINS follows the intercession of the PRIEST.
An example of forgiveness follow1ng intercession is found in NUMBERS 14:19-20. (An
example of 25 following 24 is found in every numbering system).
Another example showing the number 25 being equal to THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS
is in EPHESIANS [Link] “In whom we have REDEMPTION (20) through his blood, THE
FORGIVENESS OF SINS (25), according to the riches of his GRACE (5)”. – REDEMPTION,
(20) + GRACE, (5) = THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS (25).
In Numbers 8:24 we find that the Levites were to be 25 years old when they began their
service at the Tabernacle: NUMBERS 8:24, This shows us that we cannot serve the Lord until we
receive FORGIVENESS OF SINS, and of course we all know that! Saul of Tarsus also found this
out on the road to Damascus where he received THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS, ACTS 9:6.
The number 25 is associated with THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.
~ 26 ~
The word GOSPEL means GOOD NEWS. The number 26 seems to be the number of
GOODN NEWS or the number of the GOSPEL. Here are some examples of how this works.
In II TIMOTHY 1:8 we read about being a “partaker of the afflictions of the GOSPEL”; II
TIMOTHY1:8. IN II CORINTHIANS 11:23-29 we find a list containing 26 different afflictions
Paul experienced for the preaching of the GOODNEWS of the GOSPEL of Christ. The 26
afflictions and the verse they are found in follows:
1. labors more abundant (verse 23) 14. perils in the sea (verse 26)
2. stripes above measure (vs. 23-24) 15. perils among false brethren (vs. 26)
3. in prisons more frequent (vs. 23) 16. in weariness (verse 27)
4. in deaths oft (verse 23) 17. in painfulness (verse 27)
5, beatings (verse 25) 18. In watching’s often (verse 27)
6. a stoning (verse 25) 19. in hunger (verse 27)
7. 3 shipwrecks (verse 25) 20. in thirst (verse 27)
8. perils of waters (rivers) (vs. 26) 21. in fasting often (verse 27)
9. perils of robbers (verse 26) 22. in cold (verse 27)
10. perils of his own countrymen (vs. 26) 23. in nakedness (verse 27)
11. perils of the heathen (vs. 26) 24. the care of all the churches (vs. 27)
12. perils of the city (vs. 26) 25. in weakness (verse 29)
13. perils in the wilderness (vs. 26) 26. in offenses (being offended) (vs. 29)
29
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
These 26 afflictions Paul listed in II CORINTHIANS 11:23-29 for the preaching of the GOOD
NEWS of the GOSPEL of Christ.
Recall that the number 23 was associated with DEATH, and the number 3 was associated
with RESURRECTION. I CORINTHIANS 15:1-4. Note in verse 1 that Paul declares unto us the
GOOD NEWS, the GOSPEL (26), that Christ died (23) for our sins (verse 3), and that he rose
again (3) the third day (verse 4): GOOD NEWS (26) = 23, (death) + 3, (resurrection).
JOHN 3:16 contains 26 words in the Greek; GOOD NEWS.
The 26th time we find Noah’s name is in GENESIS 8:11, let’s turn there and read the
GOOD NEWS; GENESIS 8:11.
In ACTS 9:34 we read Peter’s name in ACTS for the 23rd time, right after which we read
of Tabitha’s death. We then read Peters name 3 more times (for resurrection) after which we read
the GOOD NEWS that Tabitha was alive, (ACTS 9:34-41). In other words, it is after the 26th time
we find Peter’s name mentioned that we read this GOOD NEWS!’
26 times in scripture do we find the word “ministers.” In I CORINTHIANS 3:4 we read:
“Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave
to every man?” Ministers are to preach the GOSPEL, the GOOD NEWS. Who ministered the
GOOD NEWS to you?
We also find Saul (the Apostle Paul’s other name) mentioned 26 times in ACTS. Whose
GOSPEL will establish you? (Paul’s). ROMANS 16 :25.
The number 26 points to the GOSPEL or the GOOD NEWS.
~ 27 ~
In our study of the different numbers and their meanings we have given at least 3 examples
of why they mean what they do in scripture. It is my opinion that each number should have at least
two similar examples for a sufficient witness as to what a particular number may mean. I was going
to skip the number 27 for lack of evidence, but the Lord impressed me “With ample similar
examples, and one meaning seems to be prominent with the number 27. It seems that the number
27 has to do with the PREACHING OF THE GOSPEL. Here is the evidence.
First of al1 we find the word PREACHING 27 times in the Bible. What is PREACHING?
PREACHING is the telling of the GOOD NEWS concerning the Son of God, Jesus, and how he
died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third
day according to the scriptures; and those that believe in their heart that God hath raised Jesus from
the dead, shalt be saved. In I CORINTHIANS 1:21we read this statement: “it pleased God by the
foolishness of PREACHING to save them that believe,” Guess how many times you will find the
name “Jesus” mentioned in I CORINTHIANS; 27 times.
In II CORINTHIANS 3:6 Paul writes: “who also hath made us able ministers of the New
Testament.” We mentioned in the number 26 how ministers PREACH the GOOD NEWS: in other
words, a minister’s duty is the PREACHING OF THE GOSPEL. The New Testament Paul spoke
of contains 27 books for the PREACHING OF THE GOSPEL.
The 27th time we find Barnabas’ name mentioned is in GALATIANS 2:9. In this verse we
find that Paul and Barnabas were encouraged to go unto the gentiles so they could hear the
PREACHING OF THE GOSPEL. GALATIANS 2:9.
One more thing to consider about the number 27 is that 27 = 3 X 9, 3 we found was a
number associated with the Holy Spirit, in that he is the third personality of the trinity. The number
9 was a number showing the FINAL touches on an overcoming Christian life can only be
DIVENELY COMPLETED by the HOLY SPIRIT. In this regard we found 9 gifts of the HOLY
30
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
SPIRIT, 9-fold fruit of the HOLY SPIRIT, and 9 offices of the HOLYS PIRIT. 9 X 3 = 27.
Effective true PREACHING OF THE GOSPEL requires the help of the HOLY SPIRIT (3), I will
give you 2 examples (sufficient testimony) of this from the book of ACTS. First, consider Stephen,
a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost (ACTS 6:5), and the sermon he preached in ACTS 7. It
was Stephen’s sermon and subsequent death which initially pricked the heart of Saul of Tarsus;
(study ACTS 7 and 22:19-20), Second, consider Paul and Barnabas, men full of the Holy Ghost,
men who PREACHED THE GOSPEL; P aul even was accused of turning the ‘‘world upside
down” (ACTS 17:6) , with his PREACHING OF THE GOSPEL, ACTS 11:19-26 and ACTS 13:2-
4 and 9. Do you see a little bit better now how numbers add up and multiply out scripturally as
well as numerically?
The number 27 points to the PREACHING OF THE GOSPEL.
~ 28 ~
The number 28 may have more than one meaning, as is the case with all of the other numbers.
Adding scriptural number values together we find that 28 is a number which points to ETERNAL
LIFE.
Remember the number 26 stood for THE GOSPEL, the GOOD NEWS? We find in
scripture the term ETERNAL LIFE 26 times, GOOD NEWS.
In the Greek, JOHN 3:14-15 (one sentence) contains 28 words (32 in English),
ending “With the words ETERNAL LIFE, JOHN 3:14-15.
In ROMANS 5:21 let’s do some figuring: “That as sin hath reigned unto DEATH (23),
even so might GRACE (5) reign through righteousness unto ETERNAL LIFE (28) by Jesus Christ
our Lord.” (23 + 5 = 28). While in ROMANS note this also; In ROMANS 5:15 we read about
‘‘the gift by GRACE” (5), ROMANS 5:15. In ROMANS 6:23 we read “the wages of sin is
DEATH” (23), “but the gift of God is ETERNAL LIFE” (28) “through Jesus Christ our Lord.” In
other words, it is by the GRACE, (5) of God that anyone is saved from the results of sin, DEATH,
(23), and receives the gift of God, ETERNAL LIFE, (28). (5 + 23 = 28).
Also consider this thought; the number 20 is a number of REDEMPTION. The number 8
shows NEW BIRTH, NEW CREATION, NEW BEGINNING. 8 (NEW) + 20 (REDEMPTION)
= 28 (ETERNAL LIFE). HEBREWS 9:12.
One more example giving a hint of how the number 28 points to ETERNAL LIFE is found
in I JOHN 5:13 where we find 2 similar statements: (1) ‘‘you that believe on the name of the Son
of God” and (2) “that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God”. Now we know that “God
hath given to us ETERNAL IFE, and this life is in His Son. He that hath the Son hath life” (I JOHN
5:11-12), In other words; “he that hath the Son” hath SALVATION (14); and “you that believe on
the name of the Son” hath SALVATION (14), 14 + 14 = 28. JOHN 5:13 has ETERNAL LIFE
sandwiched between two explanations of SALVATION JOHN 5:13.
In JOHN 19:30 we find the FINAL (9) words Jesus spoke on the cross; “it is finished”.
Those who show FAITH (19) in “that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that
he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures”, have ETERNAL
LIFE, (9 + 19 = 28).
The number 28 points to ETERNAL IFE.
~ 29 ~
The following examples shows how the number 29 relates to DEPARTURE or GOING
AWAY.
31
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
Three examples of this are found in GENESIS. In GENESIS 8:18-19 we find a sentence
where Noah’s name is mentioned for the 29th time (both in singular and plural form). In these
verses we find those on the ark DEPARTING, GENESIS 8:18 & 19. In GENESIS 20:11-13 we
find the name of Abraham (not Abram) mentioned for the 29th time. Here Abraham tells Abimelech
of an agreement he had with Sarah when he DEPARTED his father’s house, GENESIS 20:11-l3.
In GENESIS2 8:6-7 we find that Jacob DEPARTED Canaan and went to Padan-aram. In verse 7
we find Jacob’s name for the 29th time, (again counting both singular and plural forms), GENESIS
28:6-7.
Going to the New Testament, in ACTS 15:36-40 we find said of Paul and Barnabas “that
they DEPARTED as under one from the other”, ACTS 15:36-40. The Apostle Paul went on and
gave us the gospel to fill up the word of God. As for Barnabas, also an Apostle, his name is only
mentioned in passing. The significance of this in relation to the number 29; Barnabas name is only
mentioned 29 times in scripture.
29 relates to DEPARTURE or GOING AWAY.
~ 30 ~
The number 30 has a couple of different meanings. The first meaning we will show is
indicated in MATTHEW 26:14-16 and 27:3-8. Here we find thirty pieces of silver “the price of
blood’’, the BLOOD OF CHRIST. So, one of the values of the number 30 points to the BLOOD
OF CHRIST. HEBREWS 9:22. EPHESIANS 1:7 reads: “In whom we have redemption through
HIS BLOOD” (30), “the FORGIVENESOSF SINS” (25), “according to the riches of his GRACE”
(5). 30 = 25 + 5.
We also find a picture of THE BLOOD OF CHRIST being shed the 30th time we find
Noah’s name mentioned in GENESIS 8:20-21; EPHESIANS 5:2; I PETER 1:18-19.
Another example showing the number 30 pointing to the BLOOD OF CHRIST is found in
the scripture where we find Samuel’s name mentioned for the 30th time: I SAMUEL7: 9.
The following examples show how the number 30 points to the MINISTRY OF CHRIST.
In NUMBERS 4:3, 23, 30, 35, 39, 43, and 47 we read the number thirty. In these same verses we
also either read the word “work” or “service” or both. Each of these words in Hebrew [Link] the
same meanings, one of which is MINISTRY. Jesus began his MINISTRY here on earth when he
was “about thirty years of age” (LUKE 3:23). John the Baptist was 6 months older than Jesus
(LUKE 1:36). We first read of his MINISTRY when he was 30 years old, (if you think about it).
Also consider the following as we conclude the number 30. First, Jesus was subject unto
his parents until he was 30: LUKE 2:51. Second, two types of Jesus in the Old Testament can be
found in the life of Joseph, and the life of David. Both were 30 years old when their public service
began; GENESIS 41:46 and II SAMUEL 5:4.
Again, the number 30 points to the BLOOD OF CHRIST, also to the MINISTRY OF
CHRIST.
~ 31 ~
The number 31 is found very few times in the Bible and is associated with OFFSPRING.
In GENESIS we have four examples of how the number 31 is connected to OFFSPRING.
In GENESIS 3:1 we find Noah’s name mentioned for the 31st time. In this verse God tells Noah
and his sons to go and have OFFSPRING, GENESIS 9:1.
In GENESIS 14:14 we read Abram’s name for the 31st time. In this verse we find the
OFFSPRING are “his trained servants, born in his own house,” GENESIS1 4:14.
32
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
Abraham’s name is found for the 31st time in GENESIS 20:17, where we read of more
OFFSPRING, GENESIS 20:17.
In GENESIS 28 we find Jacob’s name for the 31st time in verse 16. Note the connection
with OFFSPRING as we read verses 12-16; GENESIS 28:12-16.
Jacob was the OFFSPRING of Isaac and Rebekah. Rebekah’s name is mentioned 31 times
in scripture.
OFFSPRING speaks to us of children. The word “children” is found 31 times in
MATTHEW. In MATTHEW 27:25 we have an example of how the number 31 follows 3O.
Remember the number 3O stood for the BLOOD OF CHRIST. In MATTHEW 27:25 we read of
the BLOOD OF CHRIST (3O), then of OFFSPRING (31). Paraphrasing MATTHEW 27:25 it
reads like this: “then answered all the people and said, the BLOOD OF CHRIST” (3O) “be on us,
and on our OFFSPRING’’ (31).
When we think of children, (OFFSPRING), we usually think of mothers. PROVERBS 31,
which by the way has 31 verses, contains 31 different qualities of a virtuous
woman. These qualities start in verse 10, and I will read them to you as a list of 31 from various
translations, also I will give the verse from which I am reading. Starting in verse 10 begins in
Hebrew a poem, each verse begins with a different Hebrew letter in the sequence of the Hebrew
alphabet, which has 22 letters in it. Also, each letter in the Hebrew alphabet has a different
numerical value, a point which I may make later. One more thing before we begin here, the word
virtuous speaks to us of general moral excellence; right action and thinking and goodness and
morality. Follow along as I give this list of 31 qualities of a virtuous woman found in PROVERBS
31:10-31.
(1) Her price is far above rubies (verse 10)
(2) Her husband, entrusting his heart to her, has an unfailing prize (vs. 11)
(3) She brings her husband good, and not harm all the days of her life (vs. 12)
(4) She sorts out wool and flax, and works it up as she wills (vs. 13)
(5) She buys imported foods, brought by ship from distant ports (vs. 14)
(6) She gets up before dawn to prepare breakfast for her household, and plans the day’s
work for her servant-girls (vs. 15)
(7) She purchases land prudently (vs. 16)
(8) With her earnings she plants a. vineyard (vs. 16)
(9) She girdeth with strength her loins (vs 17)
(10) And She putteth vigor into her arms (vs. 17)
(11) She sees that her business goes well (vs. 18)
(12) Her lamp goeth not out by night (vs 18)
(13) She puts her hands to the cloth-working rod (vs 19)
(14) And her fingers take the wheel (vs. 19)
(15) Kindly is her welcome to the poor (vs. 20)
(16) Her purse is ever open to those in need (vs. 20)
(17) She has no fear of winter for her household, for she has made warm clothes for all of
them (vs. 21)
(18) She makes her own quilts (vs. 22)
(19) Her own clothing is beautifully made in fine linen and purple (vs. 22)
(20) Her husband is respected at the city gates, taking his seat among the elders of the land
(vs. 23)
(21) She makes linen garments and sells them (vs. 24)
33
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
~ 32 ~
We have pointed out that each number may have more than one meaning, then again, some
number’s meanings may be hard to define, or hard to find. I don’t know how many meanings the
number 32 may have, however one thing the number 32 has to do with is a COVENANT.
Noah’s name is found for the 32nd time in GENESIS 9:8. As we read GENESIS 9:8-9 we
see how the number 32 is connected to the word COVENANT GENESIS9 9:8-9.
In GENESIS 15:1 we find Abram’s name mentioned for the 32nd time. On the same day
the Lord made a COVENANT with Abram; GENESIS 15:18. Furthermore, when we get to the
17th chapter of GENESIS, we find the Lord again appearing to Abram and explaining his
COVENANT with Abram. God also changes Abram’s name to Abraham, and Sarai’s name to
Sarah. As a part of this COVENANT God promises Abraham and Sarah a son, GENESIS 17:1-8,
15-17. The 32nd time we find Abraham’s name mentioned in singular form is in GENESIS 21:2,
where we find the son promised in this COVENANT being born, GENESIS 21:1-6.
So, as you can see, one of the meanings of the number 32 is connected to a COVENANT.
~ 33 ~
The 33rd time we find Noah’s name mentioned is in GENESIS 9:17. In verses 11-17 we
read more about the covenant God made with Noah and his sons. One of the meanings of a
covenant is a PROMISE. The number 33 is associated with PROMISE, and is closely connected
with covenant, just as 32 is closely connected with 33.
In GENESIS 9:11-17 we first read of the PROMISE of the rainbow, with which we are all familiar;
GENESIS 9:11-17.
We just read the following verses when covering the number 32, GENESIS 21:1-6, where
we found Isaac being born. GALATIANS 4:28. The 33rd. time we find Abraham’s name is in
GENESIS 21:3, where Isaac the son of PROMISE was born; GENESIS2 1:3.
Jacob’s name, in both singular and plural form, is found for the 33rd time in GENESIS
28:20-22, where he makes a PROMISE to give God a tenth of all that God gave to him; GENESIS
28:20-22.
The following three scriptures have two things in common, a (1) promise concerning (2) Christ
Jesus. Jesus Christ was 33 years old when he fulfilled that PROMISE on the cross and rose from
the grave. 30 is the number for the BLOOD OF CHRIST, 3 a number of RESSURECTION. As
34
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
PROMISED in MARK 8:31 and again in MARK 9:31, Jesus was RESSURECTED on the third
day, MARK 8:31 and 9:31. We too through the BLOOD OF CHRIST (30) look forward to the
power of his RESSURECTION (3), a PROMISE (33) explained by the Apostle Paul in many
scriptures. If you think about it, all of our PROMISES that mean anything are wrapped up in Jesus
Christ, who died for our sins when he was 33. TITUS 1;2.
33 is a number of PROMISE.
~ 34 ~
The only reference in scripture to the number 34 is found in GENESIS [Link] “And Eber
lived four and thirty years, and begat Peleg:” (a SON).
The 34th time Noah’s name is mentioned is in GENESIS [Link] “And the SONS of’ Noah,
that went forth of the ark, were Shem, and Ham, and Japheth; and Ham is the FATHER of Canaan.”
The 34th time Abraham’s name is found is in GENESIS 21:4; “And Abraham circumcised
his SON Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded him.”
The 34th time Jacob’s other name Israel is mentioned is in GENESIS [Link] ‘‘Gather
yourselves together, and hear, ye SONS of Jacob; and hearken unto Israel your FATHER.”
From the above examples we conclude that the number 34 has some connection between
SONS and FATHERS.
The 34th time we read the statement “the SON of God” is in GALATIANS 2:20. As we
read this keep in mind that God is the Heavenly FATHER; GALATIANS 2:20. Jesus Christ is the
SON of God (ACTS 8:37). I JOHN 5:7, 11-13,
Recall that the number 17 was a number which shows VICTORY IS CHRIST JESUS?
Since the number 34 is equal to 17 + 17, we would expect to see some correlation between
VICTORY IN CHRIST JESUS and the FATHER and the SON. One place we find this correlation
is in I CORINTHIANS 15:.57, which I will paraphrase this way: “But thanks be to God (the
FATHER), which giveth us the VICTORY through his SON and our Lord Jesus Christ.”
The number 34 has to do with FATHERS AND SONS.
~ 35 ~
Applying our knowledge of numbers learned so far, we conclude that one of the meanings
of the number 35 is that of HOPE. HOPE is defined as confidence; to expect with confidence or
desire; faith. Let’s see how the number 35 points to HOPE.
First of all, let’s go back to the 35th time we find Noah’s name mentioned, which is found
in GENESIS 9:19; GENESIS 9:19, In this verse we find HOPE, for without Noah’s 3 sons there
would be no HOPE for mankind replenishing the earth.
The covenant God made with Abraham in GENESIS 15 and again in GENESIS 17
promised him a seed, and that he would be a father of many nations. Isaac was the HOPE of this
covenant. The 35th time we read Abraham’s name is in GENESIS 21:5.
In I CORINTHIAN1S 3:13 we read of “faith, HOPE, and charity” (love). The number for
FAITH was 19. The number for LOVE was 16. 19 + 16 = 35, HOPE is associated with the number
35.
One of the definitions of HOPE is ‘faith’, We see an explanation of faith in a discussion of
HOPE in ROMANS 8:23-25.
One last way of looking at HOPE, the number 35. 35 is divisible by 5, GRACE = 5;
REDEMPTION (20) = 4 X 5; THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS (25) = 5 X 5; THE BLOOD OF
35
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
CHRIST (30) = 6 X 5; and now HOPE (35) = 7 X 5, See these numbers in the following scriptures:
II THESSALONIAN 2:16, EPHESIANS 1:7.
The number 35 is associated with HOPE.
~ 36 ~
When we did the study on the number 6, we found that one of the meanings of the number
6 was that of Satan, (the other two meanings we showed was that of man, and Satan’s influence
over worldly man). In studying the number 6 we then found and listed 18 (6 X 3), different names
in scripture for Satan. One of the names for Satan was enemy, MATTHEW 13:39, ACTS 13;10,
ISAIAH 59:19. Then in our study of the number 18 (6 X 3), (BONDAGE), we found two times in
JUDGES where Israel was in BONDAGE to their ENEMIES 18 years, (JUDGES 3:14, 10:7-8).
You may have observed that the common tie here in these examples, and factors of the number 36,
is the word ENEMY. One of the meanings of the number 36 = 6 X 6 = 18 X 2 is ENEMY.
The 36th time we find David’s name is in I SAMUEL 17 :48 (the second David). The 36th
time we find David’s name in I SAMUEL is in I SAMUEL17:50. Since these two scriptures are
close together, let’s read them; I SAMUEL 17:46-50. Here we find David prevailing over Goliath
whom in this case was his ENEMY. Recall when we studied the number 6 that Goliath had 6
pieces of equipment in his armour found in I SAMUEL 17:4-8, picturing the ENEMY (Satan’s)
influence over worldly man.
These 6 pieces of equipment in Goliath’s armour were, (1) a helmet of brass upon his head,
(2) a coat of mail made of brass, (J) greaves of brass upon his legs, (4) a target of brass between
his shoulders, (5) a spear, and (6) a shield. The number 6 is also found in reference to Goliath’s
height, I SAMUEL 17:4. 6 X 6 = 36 = ENEMY. (In Brother Hill’s tract “The Warfare of the
Believer” we find 7 pieces of armour for the Christian in his spiritual warfare: (1) the shield of
faith, (2) the girdle of truth, (3) the breastplate of righteousness, (4) the shoes, (5) the helmet of
salvation, (6) the sword of the spirit, and (7) prayer. 7 of course shows SPIRITUAL PERFECTION
or SPIRITUAL COMPLETION). David was equipped with this 7-fold armour. In I SAMUEL
17:45-46 we find David’s FAITH (19) regarding the outcome of his battle with Goliath. In verse
50 we find David getting the VICTORY (17) over Goliath. The VICTORY (17) over the ENEMY
(36) was a result of David’s FAITH (19) in God. 17 = 36 – 19.
David’s shield of faith protected him from the sword of Goliath his ENEMY. We need a
shield for one reason, protection from an ENEMY. In GENESIS 15:1 we read of our shield,
GENESIS 15:1. Go home and count in your Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible the
name of Abram and Abram’s, and you will find the 36th time his name is mentioned is in this
scripture we just read, GENESIS 15:1. Again
36 is a number which points to an ENEMY.
The 36th time we find the Apostle Paul’s name mentioned (as Paul) is in ACTS 17:13,
where we find those who had chosen to be Paul’s ENEMY; these were some Jews from
Thessalonica, ACTS 17;1-14.
In the book of ESTHER (page 558 in Scofield’s Bible), we read of a man named Haman,
whose purpose in life is explained in ESTHER 3:6. As you can see, he was an ENEMY of the
Jews. Now go to ESTHER 7:1-6. In verse 6 here we find Haman’s name for the 36th time, “the
adversary and ENEMY”. (The 36th time Esther’s name is mentioned is in verse 5, where she is
asked to expose the ENEMY).
All of the above examples all show that the number 36 points to an ENEMY.
36
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
~ 37 ~
The number 37 is a tough one to get a meaning out of, probably because it is the 13th
(REBELLION) prime number. Before we get to the meaning of the number 37, let me point out a
couple of interesting points as an introduction.
First of all, as we just mentioned, the number 37 is a prime number, a number that cannot
be divided by any other whole number. When the number 37 is multiplied by a multiple of 3 (up
to 3 X 3 X 3) (27) the result is a 3-digit number with the same3 digits in it. In other words, 3 X 37
= 111; 6 x 37 = 222; 9 X 37 = 333; 12 X 37 = 444; 15 X 37 = 555; 18 X 37 = 666, 21 X 37 = 777;
24 X 37 = 888; and 27 X 37 = 999. So, we see that the number 37 has mathematical properties
associated with the number 3; 3 being a number of the TRINITY, I JOHN 5:7.
Secondly, we touched briefly upon in a previous lesson on how the Greeks and Hebrews
wrote numbers. They didn’t use digits as we do, but instead assigned each letter in their alphabet
a numerical value. Furthermore, in the study of numbers in scripture, there is also a place value
assigned to each letter regarding its numerical usage. I am not even going to try to explain how all
of this is supposed to work, for it is not real important to us, only to be aware that this exists.
However, regarding these facts one author notes that each paragraph of the Bible is constructed in
a numerical scheme of numerical values and place values. For a man to construct a single book in
the Bible considering numerical values and place values would take some hundreds of years! Since
no man or set of men could write books in this fashion, the only rational explanation of the numeric
phenomena of the Bible is the guidance of its writers by a superior mathematical mind. Of course,
that superior mathematical mind is the mind of God, and this should not be of any surprise to a
believer. II TIMOTHY3:16 states “all scripture is given by inspiration of Go” (that mathematical
genius), and so it should be no surprise to a believer that these inspired scriptures add up
mathematically!
Having stated all of this, let me share with what some scholars have discovered regarding
the scriptural value of the number 37. The first time we find a hint of the numeric value in Hebrew
of the number 37 is in the first phrase of the Bible -- ‘‘In the beginning God”, (Brayshith Elohim)
-- which has a value in Hebrew of 999; 999 = 27 X 37. The number 27 had to do with THE
PREACHING OF THE GOSPEL: the number 37 has to do with THE WORD OF GOD. JOHN
1:1-5.
The name of Jesus in Greek is IESOUS. The numerical value of the name of Jesus in Greek
is 888. 888 = 24 X 37. This shows that the number of the PRIESTHOOD (24) times the number
of THE WORD OF GOD (37) doubly points to Jesus. The first part of HEBREWS 4:14 states:
“Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of
God.” JOHN 1:14 “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us”, “The same was in the
beginning with God’’, JOHN 1:2. “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the
Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” I JOHN 5:7. The number 37 has to do with
THE WORD OF GOD, in other words Jesus, I think you will see this a little fuller in our next
example.
Our final example pointing to the number 37 having to do with “THE WORD OF GOD”
is found in II SAMUEL where we find the number 37. The scripture we are referring to is II
SAMUEL 23:39 the last part where we find a reference of David’s mighty men … “thirty and
seven in all.” The catalog of David’s mighty men is found in two places, II SAMUEL 23:8-39 and
I CHRONICLES 11:10-47, (read these scriptures on your own). Let’s see how this relates to 37
being associated with THE WORD OF GOD. Recall that David was anointed to be king of Israel
long before he reigned as king, I SAMUEL15:26-28;16:1,7,11-13. Saul reigned as king over Israel,
37
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
and in time sought to kill David. The 37 mighty men of David represent Christ’s followers today,
who recognize that He is the KING OF KINGS, even though he has not yet taken that place which
the Heavenly Father gave him nearly 2000 years ago. In I SAMUEL 22:1-2, during the time where
Saul was trying to kill David, we find our first glimpse of these soon to be mighty men, I SAMUEL
2:1-2. To see what some of these 37 mighty men of David did, let’s read II SAMUEL 23:8-21.
Since David in type here represents Christ, the KING OF KINGS, let’s see in scripture If we can
look ahead and see the KING OF KINGS and some of his mighty men! I CORINTHIANS 15:20
25; I TIMOTHY6:13; JOHN 18:33-38; I TIMOTHY 6:14-16; REVELATION 17:14 (see here
whom David’s mighty men picture?); and REVELATION 19:11-16. (Note again in verse 13 that
“his name is called THE WORD OF GOD” = 37).
The number 37 has to do with THE WORD OF GOD, and as such it always points us to
Jesus.
~ 38 ~
The number 38 is only found 4 times in Scripture. Since 4 is a number pointing to HUMAN
WEAKNESS or MAN’S WEAKNESS, we should expect to see some evidence of this brought out
in the number 38. In each instance, we will examine regarding the number 38, and we will find
HUMANLY WEAK MAN (4) LOOKING AT SOMETHING OTHER THAN GOD. Since this
number 38 points to MAN LOOKING AT SOMETHING OTHER THAN GOD, we will see the
failure of man’s self-effort, man’s helplessness apart from God, and man wasting.
The first reference of this number is found in DEUTERONOMY 2:14 (read). Note that “all
the generation of the men of war” of Israel were wasted out from among the host, as the Lord
swore unto them”. We can read of this in NUMBERS 13 & 14, but for now let’s read NUMBERS
14:22-33 and 39-45. Notice that the Lord said they would waste in the wilderness (vs. 33), which
they did, and that the children of Israel, the next day, tried to go into Canaan on their own,
LOOKING AT SOMETHING OTHER THAN GOD, which resulted in their failure; failure of
their own self effort, all because they were LOOKING AT SOMETHING OTHER THAN GOD.
The second time we find the number 38 is in I KINGS 16:29, (read). It was during Ahab’s
reign that the children of Israel, for the most part, bowed unto Baal in idol worship. Obviously,
these were LOOKING AT SOMETHING THAN GOD.
The third reference to the number 38 is in II KINGS 15:8-9, where again we see MAN
LOOKING AT SOMETHING OTHER THAN GOD. II KINGS 8 & 9 also I KINGS
12:25-30.
The fourth time we find the number 38 is in JOHN 5:5. In a particular case we find a man
with an infirmity, which he had 38 years, however he was looking AT SOMETHING OTHER
THAN GOD for his healing. JOHN 5:1-15.
I want to also note that the number 38 = 2 X 19, 2 being the number of SUFFICIENT
TESTIMONY or SUFFICIENT WITNESS, and 19 being the number of FAI’IH. In the examples
given above in our discussion on the number 38 we also find SUFFICIENT TESTIMONY or
SUFFICIENT WITNESS that there were those around who had FAITH even though most every
other MAN was LOOKING AT SOMETHING OTHER THAN GOD.
In our first reference, which took us back to NUMBERS 13 & 14, the two men who showed
FAITH in God, that he was able to give them the land he promised them, were Caleb and Joshua.
This is one example of men of FAITH looking to God in FAITH, while nearly everyone else was
LOOKING AT SOMETHING OTHER THAN GOD.
38
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
During Ahab’s reign, in our second example of the number 38, we find 2 more men of
FAITH, Elijah and Elisha. These two men of FAITH were looking to God in FAITH, while nearly
everyone else was LOOKING AT SOMETHING OTHER THAN GOD. I KINGS 19;18.
Then in our example in the New Testament in JOHN 5, we found Jesus, in whom
we have our FAI’IH, Jesus, the number 2 healing a man (an act of FAITH), then leaving him, and
finding him and talking to him a second time, showing the man to LOOK TO GOD and not to
SOMETHING OTHER THAN GOD.
The number 38 points to MAN LOOKING AT SOMETHING OTHER THAN GOD.
~ 39 ~
In studying the number 39 we will find that one of its major themes is that of CHANGE.
In some instances, the CHANGE is due to the end of something or someone or both. In other cases,
the CHANGE takes place because someone trusted God in faith, and still in other examples a
CHANGE occurred because of a lack of trusting God. Since the number 38 had to do with man
LOOKING AT SOMETHING OTHER THAN GOD, I guess it should be no surprise that the next
thing that should happen would be CHANGE. So, we will see that the underlying theme of the
number 39 is that of CHANGE.
The number 39 by itself is only found once in the Bible and is used in connection with the
man Asa. Asa was a descendant of David and is listed in MATTHEW 1:7-8 as a grandfather in the
generation of Jesus Christ. I KINGS 15:11 reads: “And Asa did that which was right in the eyes
of the Lord, as did David his father’’. This is a good quality in a man, also this is a rare quality in
a man, and I’m sorry to say that this is a rare quality even in a Christian man, to find one willing
to do that which is right in the eyes of the Lord. Most men do that which is right in their own eyes,
and those eyes most often are not focused on the Lord. So, we find in Asa a good quality in that
he “did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord.” Secondly, it is said of Asa in II
CHRONICLES 14:11 that he “cried unto the Lord his God”, and of course God heard his cry and
answered his request. Calling and crying unto the Lord God for help in the time of need are further
good qualities in a Christian man. Furthermore, II CHRONICLES 15:17 states …” the heart of
Asa was perfect all his days”; another translation of this portion reads: “all his days his heart was
true to the Lord”. This, of course, is an excellent quality of a Christian man. The number 39 has to
do with CHANGE, and we read of this number one time in scripture, it concerns Asa; II
CHRONICLES 16:12. To me it is sad to have to note that a man with all of the good qualities of
Asa, in his disease “sought not to the Lord, but to” man. The CHANGE here in verse 12 was the
disease in Asa’s feet, and the fact that he sought not to the Lord, but to the doctors. Afterwards
another CHANGE took place; II CHRONICLES 16:13, The CHANGE, Asa died and was no
longer king.
The 39th time we find the Lord’s name mentioned in scripture is in GENESIS 8:20, after
which we read about a CHANGE the Lord had towards man; GENESIS 8:20-22.
In the next chapter of GENESIS, we read Noah’s name for the 39th time, in GENESIS
19:29. In this instance the CHANGE that took place was in Noah’s life, he died. (Concerning
Noah, recall that there were 5 (grace) men who lived over 900 years, Noah was the third oldest:
Methuselah lived 969 years, Jared lived 962 years, Noah lived 950 years, Adam lived 930 years,
and Seth lived 912 years, Also, Noah “found grace (5) in the eyes of the Lord” (GENESIS 6:8).
Noah also was a man of faith (19) (HEBREWS 11:7). Noah’s age 950 = 19 X 50.)
In GENESIS 50:2 we find Jacob’s other name, Israel, for the 39th time, GENESIS 50:2.
Here, again, the CHANGE that took place concerned the death of a Saint, in this case Jacob, Israel.
39
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
In I SAMUEL 17:50 we find David’s name for the 39th time: I SAMUEL 17:50. Obviously
the CHANGE that took place here was the victory over Goliath, and in turn the victory of Israel in
this instance over the Philistines. A CHANGE took place in this instance because David trusted
God in faith, which in turn lead to a CHANGE in the leadership of the Philistines, a CHANGE
due to the end of Goliath.
We find Job’s name mentioned for the 39th time in JOB 38:1 (read). Let me ask you this
question: Did a CHANGE take place in Job’s life and attitude after this discourse with the Lord?
Obviously, the answer is yes!
In our last example on how the number 39 is associated with CHANGE, let’s turn to
MATTHEW 9:27, where we find Jesus’ name for the 39th time in our King James Bible;
MATTHEW 9:27. The CHANGE’” that took place here was in the two blind men’s lives:
MATTHEW 9:27-31.
I hope that these few examples of the number 39 explain for you how the number 39 is a
number of CHANGE.
~ 40 ~
Forty stands for PERFECT TESTING. Forty is mentioned 146 times in scripture, but we
will only cover a few major examples of how 40 stands for PERFECT TESTING.
The first example of the number 40 is found in GENESIS with the story of the flood. This
TEST took 8 souls and preserved them from the judgement of God.
GENESIS 6:5-8; 7:1, 4-12, 17-23.
Probably one of the most famous and familiar examples of the number 40 is found in
reference to the children of Israel being TESTED in the wilderness 40 years. Hopefully in our
Christian lives we have learned many practical lessons from the mistakes of the children of Israel,
and the TESTS they faced during their 40 years of TESTING in the wilderness. The Apostle Paul
wrote it to us this way; I CORINTHIANS 10:1-13. DEUTERONOMY 1:2 shows us that it was
not a 40-year journey from Egypt to Caanan; DEUTERONOMY 1:2, 19-25; NUMBERS 13:25;
DEUTERONOMY 1:26-32; NUMBERS 14:26-39; DEUTERONOMY 1:33-40, 2:7;
NEHEMIAH 9:19-21; ACTS 13:17-18; HEBREWS 3:16-19. Thus, we see how 40 stands for
PERFECT TESTING,
While we are referring to the TESTINGS surrounding Israel in the wilderness let’s consider
Moses’ life, and the other 40’s associated with Moses. Moses was 40 years old when he first left
Egypt; ACTS 7:20-29; EXODUS 2:11-15. He was those first 40 years in Egypt being trained as
Pharoah, but God was using this time to prepare him for a later TEST. Moses was then 40 years a
shepherd for Jethro his father-in-law in the land of Midian, a. further TESTING time in Moses’
life where the Lord was further preparing him for the later TEST in bringing Israel out of Egypt,
ACTS 7:29-35. Then, of course, Moses was Israel’s leader during those 40 years of TESTING in
the wilderness as Moses took them from Egypt through the wilderness; ACTS 7:36. During these
40 years we find a time when Moses was in the mount 40 days and 40 nights, EXODUS 24 115-
18. This time became a TESTING time for the children of Israel, EXODUS 32:1-7. Moses recalled
this time of TESTING in DEUTERONOMY 9:9-25.
Another famous and familiar example of how 40 stands for PERFECT TESTING concerns
Jesus, and his being TESTED of the Devil. MATTHEW 4:1 -11, (also LUKE 4:1-13), MARK 1:
11-13.
Here are some other brief of how the number 40 relates to PERFECT TESTING. Goliath
TESTED Israel 40 days, I SAMUEL 17:16. Elijah, during a time of great TESTING in his life,
40
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
was fed by the angel of the Lord, and went in the strength of that meat 40 days and nights, I KINGS
19:8. In Jonah’s life there was a TEST regarding Nineveh; JONAH 1:1-2, chapter 3, 4:11.
Here are some other 40’s found in scripture. ACTS 1:3; GENESIS 25:20; 26:34 and
EXODUS 26:19 (read Scofield’s note; redemption (20) + redemption (20) = 40).
There are a lot of other 40’s mentioned in the Bible. Study them and see how 40 stands for
PERFECT TESTING.
In our study of God’s value and meaning of numbers we have not skipped any numbers
from O-40, however from this point on we will only cover certain select numbers. anyone wishing
more information on the numbers we don’t cover can find meanings of the numbers we miss by
exhaustive personal study, using a good concordance as a starting reference, and the knowledge
of the numbers we have already covered for supplemental information.
~ 42 ~
As you will shortly see by example, the number 42 is associated in some fashion or another
with a HEAVENLY APPEARANCE. This is about as simple as I can state a definition of the
number 42 scripturally speaking.
Our first example of the number 42 takes us to MATTHEW 1:17, which reads: “So all the
generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying
away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ
are fourteen generations”. (14 X 3 = 42). Note that in this verse we find the number 14 three times.
Recall that 14 stands for DELIVERANCE or SALVATION and as such points to Christ our
Saviour and Deliverer. The number 3 was for TRINITY (of which Christ or Saviour is a part), and
RESURRECTION which Christ our Saviour did 3 days after being crucified. 3 X 14 = 42, so we
see the number 42 in MATTHEW 1:17, after which we read of a HEAVENLY, for Jesus Christ
our Saviour “made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was
made in the likeness of men”, and was born in the verses following MATTHEW 1:17.
Our second example is really several examples referring to different scriptures concerning
a timetable of 42 months, not necessarily the same 42-month time frame is found in each example.
The main point I want to emphasize during this discussion is not so much the events of each 42-
month time frame, but the fact that before and after these 42 months there will be a HEAVENLY
APPEARANCE, which we will read about shortly. Before we get into these 42-month periods,
there will be a HEAVENLY APPEARANCE, “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven
with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ
shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the
clouds, to meet the Lord in the air:” ‘‘In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye,” this of course
referring to those that will be in the Bride of Christ. Next, we need to define 42 months. A Jewish
month is 3O days. 42 months then is 3 1/2 years, or 1260 days. ‘We find 1260 days referred to in
REVELATION 12:6 (read). This same period of time is again referred to in REVEIATION 12:14
(read). Note that in verse 14, the 42 months is referred to as a time (one year), (12 months), times
(two years), (24 months), and a half a time (half a year), (6 months), Here are some other scriptures
which refer to this 42-month time frame: DANIEL 7:24-25, 9:27, 12:7 and again REVELATION
12:14. Prior to this period of 42 months, we have another 42-month time period recorded in
REVEIATION 11:2-3 (read). After these two periods of 42 months, we read again of a
HEAVENLY APPEARANCE, REVELATION 19:11-16. In this portion of our study, we are
41
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
trying to emphasize that associated with the number 42, in one way or another, is a HEAVENLY
APPEARANCE.
Our third and final example of how the number 42 is associated with a HEAVENLY
APPEARANCE takes us back to the Old Testament, II KINGS 2:23. There are a couple of different
approaches that can be taken to get the meaning out of this scripture, which were discussed in
Scott’s class recently. An amplified translation reads like this: “And he (Elisha) went up from
thence unto Beth-el: and as he was going by the way, there came forth young (maturing and
accountable) boys, out of the city and poked fun at him, saying, go up (in a whirlwind), you bald
head, go up (in a whirlwind), you bald head.” Obviously, those rebellious young men were
referring to a HEAVENLY APPEARANCE when Elijah was translated, II KINGS 2:11-12. So,
what does all of this have to do with the number 42? Read II KINGS 2:23-24.
Hopefully now you can better see how the number 42 points to a HEAVENLY
APPEARANCE.
~ 45 ~
The number 45 points to PRESERVATION. We have two examples in scripture that I
could find to point this out. For simplicity’s sake, we will start with the second example in scripture
first.
This example takes us back in the Old Testament, to the life of Caleb. Recall in your
thinking that Caleb was one of the 12 spies sent to spy out the land of Canaan, the same land that
God had promised Abram centuries before, ‘‘the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of
Canaan, for an everlasting possession.” Caleb, and the other 11 spies, searched out the land of
Canaan 40 days, after which, Caleb and Joshua returned with a good report, the other 10 spies
brought forth a negative report. NUMBERS 14:24 records these words from God: “But my servant
Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into
the land where into he went; and his seed shall possess it.” By the time the children of Israel were
allowed to go into the land of Canaan, all of Israel that had murmured against God at Kadesh-
Barnea were dead except those who were under the age of 20 when the spies returned from Canaan
with their report. There were two exceptions, Joshua, and Caleb, the two spies who brought the
good report. In other words, Joshua and Caleb were at least 38 years older than everyone else
in Israel! They were preserved because they trusted God. We will see this thought of
PRESERVATION and the number 45 in JOSHUA 14:10 (read verses 7-13).
The second example of the number 45 that we will cover takes us back to Genesis, and the
story of Lot, and Sodom and Gomorrah. I am sure you are all familiar with the story of Sodom and
Gomorrah, but if not, I will read a capsule of the events surrounding Sodom and Gomorrah from
an expounded translation of JUDE 7: “Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the adjacent cities,
which likewise acted immorally, and pursued homosexuality, and are now before us an example
of eternal fire in the punishment which they are undergoing.” One translation of LEVITICUS
18:22 reads: “Homosexuality is absolutely forbidden, for it is an enormous sin.” GENESIS 19:1
which we will not read here, shows how caught up Lot was in Sodom, where he had become a
great man in the eyes of the world. Recall now in your thinking the thought of Lot and Sodom and
Gomorrah, and focus on the word PRESERVATION. Abraham stood before the Lord as
intercessor for Lot, and asked the Lord to PRESERVE Sodom and Gomorrah if so many righteous
were found therein. Shortly we will read several verses in GENESIS 18, and as we do I want you
to especially notice how that the number 45 stands out, for Abraham asks God to PRESERVE the
42
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
city if there were 50, 45, 40, 30, 20 and then 10 righteous people in the city. Note that the number
45 doesn’t belong in this sequence if you were asked to pick out the number which doesn’t belong.
But the number 45 is in this sequence if only for this reason, to point us to its value, and that being
PRESERVATION. The number 45 points to PRESERVATION. GENESIS 18:1-2, 20-33.
Again, the number 45 has to do with PRESERVATION.
~ 50 ~
The meaning of the number 50 is probably. familiar to those who know something about
the meanings of Biblical numbers. The number 50 is found 154 times in scripture, which is
considerably more than average for a number in the Bible. The number 50 means PENTECOST
and as such has to do with the HOLY SPIRIT for it was on the day of PENTECOST when the
disciples were filled with the HOLY GHOST, and began to speak with other tongues, as the
SPIRIT gave them utterance, (ACTS 2:1 & 4). To non-Pentecostal’s the number 50 is still a
number which points to the HOLY SPIRIT. And to others the number 50 means JUBILEE, which
is further explained in LEVITICUS 25. So, in short, the number 50 is a number of PENTECOST,
THE HOLY SPIRIT, and JUBILEE.
Let me briefly review some facts that we have covered in recent lessons. In LEVITICUS
23 we have a list of feasts that the children of Israel, (the Jews), were to celebrate. As time went
on, these feasts were celebrated in Jerusalem by Jews from all over the world, and there are many
New Testament scriptures which bear this out. One feast was the sheaf of the wave-offering,
known also as the feast of firstfruits, LEVITICUS 23:9-11. This feast, in type, pictures the
resurrection of Christ from the dead. I CORINTHIANS 15:20-23 clearly points this out: (an
expounded translation), (:20) But the glorious fact is that Christ did rise from the dead, he has
become the very first to rise of all who sleep the sleep of death, in other words the first in the
harvest of those who are sleeping in their graves (:21) Death came because of what one man
(Adam) did, and it is because of what this other man (Christ) has done that now there is resurrection
from the dead. (:22) For just as all men die by virtue of their descent from Adam, so because of
their relation to Christ they will be brought to life again. (:23) But every man in his own rank, with
Christ the very first, then when He comes, those who belong to Christ. LEVITICUS 23:15-16
points out the timetable for the next feast, which became known as the feast of weeks, and later
the feast of PENTECOST for it came 50 days after the feast of firstfruits, LEVITICUS 23:15-16.
In the New Testament we read that it was 50 days after Christ’s resurrection that the disciples were
at Jerusalem on the day of PENTECOST, and they were filled with the HOLY GHOST, ACTS
2:1-4, Thus we see why the number 50 is associated to PENTECOST and the HOLY SPIRIT.
The number 3 also pointed to the HOLY SPIRIT, in that he was the third personality
mentioned in the trinity, I JOHN.5:7. The term PENTECOST is also mentioned just 3 times in
scripture, again pointing to the HOLY SPIRIT; ACTS 2:1; 20:16 and I CORINTHIANS 16:8. The
feast of PENTECOST is, no doubt, the feast Paul intended to keep at Jerusalem mentioned in
ACTS 18:21.
Let me give you another marvelous example of the number 50 being associated to the
HOLY SPIRIT. The 50th time we find the Apostle Paul’s name mentioned as Paul is in ACTS
19:6. What more confirmation do we need?
Also, in scripture we find the word “blue” 50 times, all in the Old Testament. Blue, as a
colour, points us to heaven (the blue sky). Let me give you a few verses in the New Testament,
which point us toward the blue sky also, and the HOLY SPIRIT. ACTS 1:5-11, JOHN 14:26;
15:26-27 and ACTS 2:1-4.
43
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
In REVELATION we find the words “voice” and “voices” used 50 times. This “voice” or
“voices’’ was heard in heaven, so again we see the number 50 pointing us toward heaven.
Finally, in LEVITICUS 25:10 we read that, to a Jew, the 50th year was a year of JUBILEE;
LEVITICUS 25:10. In other words, the year of JUBILEE everyman returned and repossessed any
land that he may have had to sell because of debts. This prevented the accumulation of land by a
few wealthy individuals. JUBILEE actually promoted peace and harmony in families and tended
to preserve genealogies. But more than that, it pointed heavenward, for it was a constant reminder
that Jehovah was the owner of the promise land, and that Israel were His tenants, who held the
land simply as His servants.
The number 50 has to do with PENTECOST, THE HOLY SPIRIT, and JUBILEE.
~ 60 ~
The number Sixty is referred to in scripture as sixty, and as three-score.
The number 60 has to do with SECONDS, either SECOND TIME or SECOND PLACE. I think
this will become more evident as we study the following examples.
Abraham’s wife Sarah’s name is mentioned 60 times in scripture with the following
spellings: Sarah-38 times; Sarah’s - 3 times; Sara - 2 times; Sarai - 16 times; and Sarai’s - once.
This totals 60 times that Sarah’s name is mentioned in scripture. God gave Sarah, at age 91, a
SECOND TIME at youth, and she bare Abraham a son, Isaac. GENESIS 18:9-14 and 21:1-7. In
other words, Sarah became the mother of all Israel. The point we want to emphasize here is that
Sarah had a SECOND TIME at youth.
In DANIEL 3:1 we find that “Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose
height was” 60 cubits. The events which took place after this is what we will briefly focus on.
Recall that Nebuchadnezzar made a decree that the 60-cubit high image should be worshipped
when the music was played. Those Jewish boys Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refused to
worship the 60-cubit image, and were thrown into the fiery furnace, but were divinely saved from
any harm, DANIEL 3:24-28. In Daniel 4 we have a testimony of Nebuchadnezzar. In this chapter
we find this lesson, among many others: “the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth
it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it whomsoever he will,” This proud man,
Nebuchadnezzar, learned this lesson after the Lord took his kingdom from him a seven-year
period. DANIEL 4:28-37. I want you to notice two things here: (1) God gave Nebuchadnezzar a
SECOND TIME to be king, and (2) this SECOND TIME for Nebuchadnezzar to be king didn’t
involve any 60-cubit high images to worship, for Nebuchadnezzar himself acknowledged the King
of heaven.
In ACTS 20:10 we find the Apostle Paul’s name (as Paul) for the 60th time. In that verse
a young man named Eutychus was given a SECOND TIME at life. ACTS 20:7-12.
In MATTHEW 13 and MARK 4 we have the parable of the Sower. For some, they hear
the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty and some an hundred.
MARK 4:1-20. Those receiving the word and bringing forth 60-fold fruit to God picture those who
will have God’s SECOND best, or SECOND PLACE. In other words, those who bring forth an
hundred fold fruit represent the full overcomers in the bride of Christ.
A side note: 60 also figures in time, for in a minute there are 60 SECONDS, and in an hour,
there are 60 minutes.
For our study we tried to show that the number 60 points to a SECOND TIME or SECOND
PLACE.

THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
~ 70 ~
The number 70 points to RULERSHIP. It can be Gentile RULERSHIP, or Jewish
RULERSHIP, but more importantly for us the number 70 points to divine RULERSHIP.
Remember “the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will,”
for ultimately He is the RULER.
The number 70 in scripture is referred to as seventy and three-score and ten.
In three different scriptures we read there were 70 souls of the house of Jacob, (Israel),
which came into Egypt. GENESIS 46:27; EXODUS 1:5; DEUTERONOMY 10:2. God blessed
the children of Israel while in the Gentile land of Egypt, and they became as the stars of heaven
for multitude. As time went on the children of Israel were under the RULERSHIP of the Egyptians,
but God the ultimate RULER, took over and delivered the children of Israel from Egyptian
RULERSHIP.
In JUDGES 1:6 the Canaanites king Adoni-bezek had his thumbs and big toes cut off by
the children of Israel. This was perceived by Adoni-bezek as repayment for what he had previously
done to 70 other kings, whom he had conquered. JUDGES 1:1-7. When Adoni-bezek RULED the
kings he conquered, he had their thumbs and great toes cut off. When his RULERSHIP ended, and
God’s chosen peoples RULERSHIP began, the same fate befell him.
In JUDGES 8:30 we read that Gideon had 70 sons from his many wives. He also had a son
named Abimelech from one of his servant wives from Shechem. JUDGES 8:30-35. Mary Bodie
notes that the “name Abimelech is quite well known in the scripture, it is the successional name
for the Kings of the Philistines.” This Abimelech conspired with his mother’s brethren from
Shechem and had all the sons of Gideon killed so that he could be the RULER. JUDGES 9:1-5,
21-24, 50-56; 10:1. In this example there were 70 sons of Gideon killed so one man could be
RULER, however in the end God over-ruled and gave Israel new RULERSHIP.
In JUDGES 12:13-15 Abdon Judged Israel 8 years. JUDGES 12:13-15. Note that he had
40 sons and 3O nephews who rode 70 ass colts, which points us to the RULERSHIP of Abdon.
In NUMBERS 11:16-17 we find 70 men of the elders of Israel, chosen to help Moses bear
the burden of the people, NUMBER 11:16-17. It is thought that later this tradition carried on with
70 being associated with the Sanhedrin. At any rate observe again how the number 70 is closely
connected with RULERSHIP.
In one of the more complicated examples regarding the number 70, we find in the following
scriptures that Israel was to keep a sabbath year every 7th year. It was a time God ordained for the
land to rest, LEVITICUS 25:1-4. As time went on, Israel turned to idolatry and failed to keep 70
sabbath years. Of course, this meant that a 490-year period of time had elapsed in order for 70
sabbath years to have passed. God then allowed Judah to be captive for 70 years to give His
promised land the 70 years of sabbath rest it was due. LEVITICUS 25:1-4; 26:1-15, 32-46;
JEREMIAH 25:1-2, 8-12; 29:10; DANIEL 9:2; II CHRONICLES 36:20-21. Here the Lord who is
really in control of the RULERSHIP.
In DANIEL 9:24 we find that 70 weeks of 7 years each, or 490 years, were to be fulfilled
to finish the transgression of Israel, which had failed to observe her sabbatical years for a previous
490-year period. DANIEL 9:24. During this time the Lord gave the Gentiles the RULERSHIP.
In LUKE 10:1-20 we find that Jesus appointed 70 and sent them forth in groups of two.
Two things are to be noted here. First, that the Lord gave these 70 RULERSHIP (power) over the
enemy. Secondly, there were 35 groups of 2; 35 being the number of HOPE, 2 being a number of
SUFFICIENT TESTIMONY.
45
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
In ACTS 23:23 we find, among other things, 70 Gentile horsemen. ACTS 23:23. Again,
we find the number 70 in connection to RULERSHIP, for this group of horsemen were part of the
Roman soldiers who took Paul to one of the Gentile RULERS of his day, Felix.
In PSALM 90:10 we find that the Lord has RULED that the days of our years are 70,
PSALMS 90:10.
In EXODUS 15:27 and NUMBERS 33:9 we find 70 palm trees, EXODUS 15:27;
NUMBERS 33:9. Observe how that we find the DIVINE GOVERNMENT number 12 along with
the number for RULERSHIP 70, in these verses, and that there Israel found rest.
MATTHEW 18:21-22. Considering what we have learned with the number 70, and with
the number 7 previously, we find in this portion of scripture this lesson: If you want SPIRITUAL
PERFECTION (7) in your life, you need to let the Lord have the RULERSHIP (70) of your life.
To paraphrase the Apostle Paul in II TIMOTHY 2:12 If we suffer things for Christs sake, even
brothers sinning against us, we shall also share RULERSHIP with him ….
With these examples I hope you can see how the number 70 points to RULERSHIP.
~ 80 ~
The number 80 points to, not so much the STRENGTH of man, but emphasizes the
STRENGTH OF GOD. When we find the STRENGTH OF GOD, we can’t help but notice the
weakness of man. All of this will become more apparent as we get into the examples -which follow.
The number 80 is found in scripture as four score, where it is mentioned in reference to 80
eleven times. Recall that the number 11 shows insufficiency. Man, himself is insufficient, but we
find sufficiency in God, and STRENGTH IN GOD; II CORINTHIANS 3:5, 12:9.
Our first example on how the number 80 points to STRENGTH is found in a verse we have
already covered regarding the number 70, PSALMS 90:10.
In our next example on STRENGTH, let’s highlight Moses’s life at age 80, and if you think
about it, most of the information we have regarding Moses in scripture occurs from age 80 on.
EXODUS 3:1-14; 4:19-21; 7:7. During this 80th year of Moses’ life, he faced Pharaoh numerous
times, and by the STRENGTH OF GOD performed numerous miracles, including probably the
most famous of all, the crossing of the red sea, EXODUS 14:21-28 also 13:3,14,16; 15:1-2. The
number 80 points to STRENGH with special emphasis on the STRENGTH OF GOD as contrasted
with the weakness of man.
In JUDGES 3:15-30 we have the story of the second Judge of Israel, Ehud. One of the
meanings of Ehud’s name is ‘strong’, which of course shows STRENGTH. JUDGES 3:15 shows
that the Lord was with Ehud, for “the Lord raised them” (Israel) “a deliverer, Ehud”. It was by the
leading of Ehud, and the STRENGTH OF GOD that Israel’s enemy, the Moabites, were defeated,
JUDGES 3:30. Thus because Israel cried unto the Lord and trusted HIS STRENGTH, the land had
rest 80 years,
Our next example of the number 80 pointing to the STRENGTH OF GOD takes us into the
life of Jehu. II KINGS 9:1-3 and 10:18-28. Notice again how 80 points to STRENGTH, especially
the STRENGTH OF GOD, for here Jehu’s 80 men with the STRENGTH OF GOD for help
destroyed Baal out of Israel,
In I CHRONICLES 15 we find that king David prepared a place for the ark of God. I
CHRONICLES 15:1-4. In verse 9 we find that one of the Levite families chief was Eliel, I
CHRONICLES 1:9. We now know that 80 points to STRENGTH, especially the STRENGTH OF
GOD, and we find this also in the meaning of Eliel’s name. Eliel’s name means ‘God of His God’,
and gets this from a root word meaning STRENGTH, mighty, and especially Almighty. We know
46
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
that it is from the Almighty God where weak man gets his STRENGTH, II CORINTHIANS 12:9-
10.
In the last example that we will cover concerning the number 80 takes us to II
CHRONICLES 26 where we read the story of the rise and fall of Uzziah, a man who initially
sought God, but later began to trust in his own STRENGTH. The STRENGTH OF THE LORD
was then manifest against Uzziah when 80 priests of the Lord withstood Uzziah, which lead to his
downfall. II CHRONICLES 26:1-21.
In these few examples we have shown how the number 80 points to STRENGTH, with
special emphasis on GOD’S STRENGTH, and GOD’S STRENGTH given to weak men
who trust in Him, and thus are made strong.
~ 100 ~
To begin to unlock the meaning of the number 100, let’s look at some of the keys that we
already have. These keys come in the form of the numerical factors of the number 100. 2, 4, 5, 10,
20, 25, and 50 are all factors of 100. We will consider them in groups of two whose product equals
100. The number 2 had to do with JESUS, the number 50 had to do with THE HOLY SPIRIT; 2
X 50 = 100. The number 4 was an EARTHY NUMBER that had to do with MAN’S WEAKNESS,
the number 25 pointed towards the FORGIVENESS OF SINS; 4 X 25 = 100. 5 was the number of
GRACE, 20 was the number of REDEMPTION; 5 X 20 = 100. 10 was the number showing
RESPONSIBILITY ACCORDING TO ABILITY; 10 x 10 = 100. All these factors point to
positive things; thus, the product (100) should also point to positive things. When we finally get
to stating the meaning of the number 100, I think that you will see that it is a very positive number.
Furthermore, the number 100 probably has more than one meaning, but we will only cover the
major meaning of the number. For your own thinking consider this, different numerology authors
have come up with the following meanings for the number 100, all correct in their own way, and
all positive: (1) perfect maturity, (2) full count, (3) full growth, (4) God’s election of grace, and
(5) children of promise. All these things can be found regarding the number 100. However, in the
interest of simplicity and considering the overall picture concerning 100, I think it can best be
defined as the number of COMPLETION.
Let’s go back to our keys and see how they point towards COMPLETION. The number 2
had to do with JESUS, 50 has to do with the HOLY SPIRIT, multiplied together they equal a
COMPLETE CHRISTIAN and a candidate for the Bride of Christ. 4, an earthly number that
pointed to MAN’S WEAKNESS times 25, a number showing THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS
equals a COMPLETE Christian man forgiven from sin and taking his strength from God! The
number of GRACE, 5, times 20 the number of REDEMPTION equals again a COMPLETE
Christian REDEEMED by the GRACE of God! 10, the number of RESPONSIBILITY
ACCORDING TO ABILITY, multiplied by itself shows us that if a man will take the
responsibility according to his ability to trust God and His responsibility, the man will be a
COMPLETE Christian, and no doubt a victorious Christian. All of the above has been stated as a
rather lengthy introduction to the meaning of the number 100, a number which points to
COMPLETION.
Let’s now define COMPLETE and COMPLETION scripturally. The words COMPLETE
and COMPLETION refer to a finished usable product; something that is not incomplete but whole;
something that has no lack. COMPLETENESS encompasses full growth and perfect maturity,
terms mentioned previously above. COMPLETE or COMPLETION is close akin to the concept
47
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
of perfection, which implies full development or growth into maturity of godliness. MATTHEW
5:48; JAMES 1:2-4; COLOSSIANS 2:10.
The number 100 then points us to those one-hundred fruitful in Christ, in other words the
full overcomers, those that are 100 percent fruitful. MARK 4:1-20. Recall in our study of the
number 60 that we noted those receiving the word and bringing forth 60-fold fruit to God pictured
those who will have God’s second best or second place, those who bring forth 100-fold fruit
represents the full overcomers that will be in the Bride of Christ. The number 100 points us to
COMPLETION. To help emphasize this point let me read an expounded translation of
PHILIPPIANS 1:6 “And I am confident accordingly, and fully persuaded that he by whom the
good work was started in you will continue until the day of Jesus Christ -- right up to the time of
His return - developing (that good work) and perfecting and bringing it to full COMPLETION in
you’’. The thought of COMPLETION then points us to an overcomer.
The number 100 was used by Jesus to illustrate, among other things, a COMPLETE flock.
MATTHEW 18:11-14. Note this thought regarding the number 100, when just one sheep was gone
astray the flock was incomplete, until the lost sheep was found, and the count again was
COMPLETE at 100. JOHN 10:27-29.
While in JOHN let’s consider that most important day when Jesus COMPLETED His work
on the cross and note that on that day, we find the number 100 also, JOHN 19:38-39. Again, the
number 100 points us to completion.
The number 100 points to COMPLETION again in MARK 10:28-30.
We will now consider Abraham’s life where we also have the thought of COMPLETION
connected with the number 100. Abraham was one of the Old Testament worthies of faith found
mentioned in the list of Old Testament overcomers found in HEBREWS 11. A brief capsule of his
life is found in the following verses: GENESIS 15:6; ROMANS 4:3, 19-22; GALATIANS 3:6;
JAMES 2:23 and HEBREWS 11:8-12. What does all of this have to do with the number 100? The
record we have of Abraham’s life covers a period of 100 years: GENESIS 12:1-4 (note here that
he was 75 years old), GENESIS 25:7-8 (Abraham died at 175 years of age). Furthermore, in
Abraham’s life God made a covenant with him: GENESIS 17:1-8, 19 and 21:5, Note that this
promise of God was complete in Isaac, ROMANS 9:4-9.
Then again in Isaac’s life we find the number 100 pointing to COMELETENESS, for God
had blessed him; GENESIS 26:1-6, 12.
You may find in your study’s other meanings for each number. We have tried to point out
the basic meanings in all the numbers we have covered so far. In the examples we have just covered
we tried to show how the number 100 points to COMPLETION. There are other scriptures we
haven’t covered with nearly every number we have studied so far. What we have tried to do is only
give a few examples on each number to emphasize its main meaning. The numbers we have
covered so far will help you get more out of your studies, and if John gets into the study
of the tabernacle in the wilderness, I think you will better see their value there.
~ 120 ~
The number 120 points us to a LIMIT. It may point to a LIMIT in time. It may point to a
maximum number of something, which is a limit for the example given. It may point to the highest
degree of something, a LIMIT. As we look at the examples regarding the number 120, look in
them for some kind of LIMIT.
In GENESIS 6:3 we find our first mention of the number 120. GENESIS 6:3. One
translation of this verse reads : “And the Lord said, My Spirit must not forever be disgraced in
48
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
man, wholly evil as he is. I will give him 120 years to mend his ways.” In other words, 120 years
was God’s LIMIT in time to man before he destroyed man in the flood.
In Moses’ life the was a LIMIT as to how far Moses could lead the children of Israel, “and
the Lord said unto him, This is the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob,
saying, I will give it unto thy seed: I have caused thee to see it with thine eyes, but thou shalt not
go over thither” (DEUTERONOMY 34:4), In the next verse Moses dies, the LIMIT of time for
his life was 120 years. DEUTERONOMY 31:1-2; 34:1-7.
In Jesus’ life there are many references to the multitudes which followed Him. After His
death and resurrection, he was seen of more than 500 brethren at once (I CORINTHIANS 15:6).
By the time Jesus had been shewing himself alive after his death for 40 days (ACTS 1:3), there
were only about 120 of the multitudes left who were still following Jesus. ACTS 1:15. It was to
this LIMITED group of 120 to whom the gift of the Holy Ghost was initially given. ACTS 2:1-4.
Surrounding Solomon’s life, we find several examples of 120. Before I get to specific
examples, let’s recall that God placed a unique LIMIT on Solomon’s life: I KINGS 3:12-13. Then
in Solomon’s life we find several examples of 120. I KINGS 9:10; 10:1, 10. For your reference, a
talent of gold is worth about $300,900 in today’s dollars. So, in other words, 120 talents X
$300,000 = $36,000,000. This LIMIT of 120 talents of gold was the same amount found in I
KINGS 9:14. From these verses we see that 120 talents of gold seems to be the LIMIT that any
one person gave Solomon at any one time. In II CHRONICLES we find that the temple, the house
of the Lord was finally finished. As part of the celebration, we find 120 priests blowing trumpets.
This is the maximum LIMIT of priests blowing trumpets that I could find mentioned in scripture
by number. II CHRONICLES 5:12. Further, as a part of this celebration on the finishing of the
house of the Lord, Solomon himself offered a sacrifice of 120,000 sheep. II CHRONICLE7:5.
This also seems to be the LIMIT of sheep offered in sacrifice by anyone man in scripture, a number
which is a multiple of 120, (120,000 = 120 X 1000). There are other multiples of the number 120
which point to a LIMIT, some of which we will cover in a little bit.
We have a slightly different example of how the number 120 points to a LIMIT in DANIEL
6. In DANIEL 6:1 we find 120 princes during the reign of King Darius, DANIEL 6:1. In this
example we note that 120 princes is not the maximum number of princes mentioned at any one
time in scripture, but recall that the number 120 is not a. maximum number, but a number which
points us to a LIMIT. In King Darius’ case, 120 princes -was the LIMIT he had of princes, and
over them was 3 presidents, of whom Daniel was the first; DANIEL 6:2-3. In verses 4-17 this
LIMIT of princes (along with some others), were instrumental in testing Daniel’s faith to the
LIMIT, DANIEL 6:4-17. God knows no LIMITATION, and prevailed in this situation, DANIEL
6:18-24. The 120 princes who were instrumental in accusing Daniel in this chapter were part of
the LIMITED collection of people who were next cast into this same den of lions, DANIEL 6:24-
28. The number 120 in this chapter points us to the fact that there is no LIMIT to what God can
do. So, we see again that the number 120 points us to a LIMIT.
The following examples contain numbers, which are multiples of 120 that also point to a
LIMIT.
In MATTHEW 6:53 we read of a mystery number… “more than twelve legions of angels”.
This is a mystery number, for we do not know exactly what one legion was. It is thought that a
legion was a number from 4200 to 6000. Both of these numbers are multiples of 120. Put in our
own words we could say this about MATTHEW 26:53, Jesus could have called to his assistance a
LIMIT of angels, a formidable number, especially considering what just one angel can do!
49
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
The books of EZRA, NEHEMIAH and ESTHER record the story of the Jews’ return from
Babylon. NEHEMIAH 7:66 records the number of the whole congregation was 42,360 which
returned from Babylon, a number divisible by 120. This was the LIMIT of Jews that returned from
Babylon
EXODUS 12:37 shows us that in Israel there were about 600,000 on foot that were men,
in other words men of war. 600,000 = 120 X 5000. Add to this number those under the age of 20,
the women, the Levites and you will get close to the number of people God led in the wilderness.
We, of course, don’t know the exact LIMIT of the number of people God led in the wilderness,
but a factor of 120 points us to that LIMIT, (600,000). NUMBERS 1:45-49.
One last example of how the number 120 and its multiples points us to a LIMIT. In
REVELATION 7 we read of a LIMITED number of Jews sealed out of the children of Israel. This
LIMITED number is 144,000 = 120 X 1200. From each tribe 12,000 = 120 (LIMIT) X 100
(COMPLETION).
In your own studies when you come across a number that is a multiple of 120, look for
some kind of LIMIT.
~ 144 ~
The number 144 is 12 times 12, and is found several times in scripture, usually as a factor
of some larger number. The number 12, you recall, was a number of DIVINE GOVERNMENTAL
PERECTION and the number 144 reflects this thought with special emphasis on the DIVINE. In
some sense the number 144 points us to those who are SEALED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT; the
HOLY SPIRIT is Himself the seal. The word SEALED in our definition as we use it means to
stamp (with a signet or private mark) for security or preservation. The Apostle Paul used this same
word SEALED in ROMANS 15:28 to describe how he was going to deliver the offering to
Jerusalem from those Saints who had so freely contributed for the cause of helping those poor
Saints at Jerusalem, a collection he had received all along the way on his missionary journeys, and
he states it like this: ‘‘When therefore I have completed this mission and have secured to them (the
poor at Jerusalem) the fruit of this collection, and delivered the proceeds under my own SEAL, I
will start for Spain, and come to you on the way. “Some other scriptures which further help define
the term SEALED are: JOHN6:27; II CORINTHIANS 1:21-22; EPHESIANS 1:13 and 4:30. The
number 144 points us to those who are SEALED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT.
These scriptures have in them the number 144 as a factor, and thus point to those who are
SEALED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT; REVELATION 7:1-4, 14:1-3. In these verses we find those
with the SEAL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT were, in this case, those of all the tribes of the children of
Israel, 12,000 from each tribe.
In I CHRONICLES 25:1 & 7, we find the number 144 as a factor of another number, I
CHRONICLES 25:1 & 7. The number here was 2 X 144 = 288. EPHESIANS 5:18-19 unfolds to
us the thought contained in I CHRONICLES 25:7. Note that we are encouraged to be filled with
the Spirit, and to speak and sing with Spiritual songs and hymns and psalms, things which those
filled with the Holy Spirit should do.
REVELATION 21:17. To get the whole thought here read verses 10-17. My comments on
this portion are copied from Brother Copley’s book on REVELATION. “And had a wall great and
high and had twelve gates” – Vs. 12. Similarly, to the earthly Jerusalem, the heavenly Jerusalem
will be surrounded by a wall. It will not be a wall of mineral stone, but a wall of saints, whom
Peter calls “living stones,” (I PETER 2;5). “It will measure exactly 144 cubits, a cubit being ‘‘a
man’s measure,” or the distance from a man’s elbow to his fingertip. They are wholly of Israel;
50
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
for upon the angels that guard the gates are inscribed the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of
Israel. Doubtless they will be the 144,00 which were sealed in chapter 7 and are seen standing
before the throne in chapter 14.” (End of Quote). Again, the number 144 points us to those who
are SEALED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT.
One more example of the number 144 pointing to being SEALED WITH THE HOLY
SPIRIT, In GENESIS 24:22 we find the servant of Abraham, a type of the HOLY SPIRIT, putting
two bracelets on the hands of Rebekah, a type of the Bride of Christ. The word for bracelet in
Hebrew is “TSAMID”, and its number value is 144. Again, we find that the number 144 points to
those who are SEALED with the HOLY SPIRIT.
Our last example concerning the number 144 takes us back to GENESIS 6:13-15. By
multiplying 300 cubits by 50 cubits by 30 cubits we get the total volume of the ark, which was
450,000 cubic cubits, a multiple of 144; 450,000 = 5 X 5 X 5X 5 X 144. In other words, they were
in the ark in a space multiplied by GRACE (5) and SEALED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT (144);
GENESIS 6:8 & 7:16.
I hope these examples help you see a little glimpse of how the number 144 points us to
those that are SEALED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT.
As we continue in our study of the meanings of certain numbers, recall the meanings of
their factors and use that information to help you in your own studies. We will use the number 150
as an example.
~ 150 ~
The number 150 is a number for which I have no specific meaning, but a number which
causes us to focus again on the meanings of some of its factors. 150 = 5 X 30, GRACE (5) times
THE MINISTRY OF CHRIST (30). 150 = 6 X 25, worldly MAN (6) times the FORGIVENESS
OF SINS (25). The number 150 is also a number which equals the number of days in five Jewish
months. In your own meditation I think you can see all these thoughts in the following two verses
concerning the number 150: GENESIS 7:24 & 8:3.
~ 152 ~
The number 152 is the product of 8 X 19, in other words, the number of NEW
BEGINNING, NEW CREATION, NEW BIRTH (8) times FAITH (19). The number 152 is a
number for TRUST. Trust is the characteristic Old Testament word for the NEW TESTAMENT
words ‘faith’ or ‘believe’. The word TRUST occurs 152 times in the Old Testament and is the
rendering of Hebrew words signifying - to take refuge - to lean on - to roll on - to stay upon.
Another way of saying this, the number 152 is the number for TRUST, which takes us back to the
number the number of FAITH. TRUST = FAITH.
~ 153 ~
The number 153 is used once in the Bible; thus, it is unique. It has been my goal not to use
a number as an example unless I have at least a SUFFICIENT NUMBER (2) of examples to draw
a conclusion from. However, I did come up with three examples, after much research, and
conclude, in simplest terms, that the number 153 is a number which points us to the Apostle Peter.
I suppose the Lord wants us to learn some lessons from his life, as well as all the other lives
51
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
mentioned in scripture. So here is why I say that the number 153, in the least, points us to the
Apostle Peter.
First, we will turn to JOHN 21 and read JOHN 21:1-11. In this portion note that it was
Peter who instigated this fishing trip, even though the Lord had told him in MATTEW 4:18-20 to
“follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Now there are many, many volumes of lessons
here in JOHN 21, which I won’t even attempt to get into now, for our focus here is on Peter, and
the number 153. Note verse 11, that it was Simon Peter who drew the net to land full of great
fishes, 153. Why say 153, after all that is a lot of fish, too many to count really, (try counting 153
of anything and you will see what I mean); why not say simply there was a lot of great fishes in
that net, and let it go at that? This question has been a puzzle to many Bible students, and the
answer is probably more complex than I can get into, but I say again that the number 153, in
simplest terms, is used here by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, to put a focus on the Apostle
Peter. JOHN 21:11-25. Having now read the whole chapter of JOHN 21 we note that it was the
Apostle Peter on whom the spotlight shined, with lesser emphasis placed on the others.
Our second example regarding the number 153 takes us to MATTHEW 26:31-34. In verse
34 we read Jesus’ name (either as Jesus or Christ Jesus or Jesus’) for the 153 time. Again notice
in this portion that it was the Apostle Peter who was the person Jesus focused on.
Example number three concerning the number 153 takes us to the scripture where we find
Peter’s name for the 153 time. GALATIANS 2:8. In this verse the Apostle Paul was focusing on
Peters call as an Apostle to the Jews. Of course, this was years after Peter’s calling to the ministry
we read about earlier.
If you read further in GALATIANS 2 you will find that the Apostle Paul was correcting
Peter and the other kingdom Apostles about being legal. No doubt Peter took the correction and
later wrote that “brother Paul” had written ‘‘some things hard to be understood” (II PETER 3:16),
but, obviously, Peter had a VICTORY in his heart over the Apostle Paul. I make this statement
only to further emphasize one more point about the number 153. The number 153 is the sum of
the digits 1 through 17, UNITY (1) through VICTORY (17). The number 153 is also the product
of 9 X 17, (DIVINE COMPLETENES times VICTORY). Sure, I believe we can truly see these
things in the Apostle Peter’s life and learn some important lessons there in for ourselves in our
lives.
One more thought. In ACTS 4:8 we read this … “Then Peter, filled with the HOLY
GHOST…”. I have a note in my Bible which gives the thought of this word filled as ‘a net
crammed full’. Does this bring again to your mind the ‘net crammed full’ of great fishes in JOHN
21:11, (read again).
Again, the number 153 in the least points us to the Apostle Peter.
~ 200 ~
There may be more than one meaning to the number 200, but in my research, I have found
that the number 200 is usually used in scripture to PROVE something. The word PROVE,
according to Webster, means subject to a testing process; to establish as true; demonstrate to be a
fact; to experience; to learn or know by experience; to establish the validity or authenticity (of
something), The number 40 was the number of PERFECT TESTING, and the number five was
the number of GRACE. The product of 40 (PERFECT TESTING) times 5 (GRACE) = 200 (to
PROVE).
Our first example takes us to two passages of scripture, the second better define the
meaning of 200, and the first passage is shorter to read. MARK 6:32-44. The same story is found
52
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
in JOHN 6:1-21, which you can read on your own, but to point out the meaning of the number
200, focus on verses 5-7, (read).
Note here that Jesus said to Philip, “Whence shall we buy bread, that these may
eat?” Jesus had said this to Philip to PROVE him, “for he himself knew what he would do”, and
Philip took a count of their funds, and found it to be 200 pennyworth an insufficient amount to buy
bread for all that were present. So, we get the idea that the number 200 points us to the thought of
to PROVE.
Our second example on how the number 200 points us to the thought of to PROVE takes
us to the life of the Apostle Paul. In Damascus a couple of days after Saul of Tarsus got saved, he
was told by a man named Ananias how that the Lord was going to use Paul to be a witness to
many, including kings: ACTS 9:15-16. In thinking of the life of Paul, most of Paul’s witnessing
to governors and kings took place after his arrest at Jerusalem at the conclusion of his third
missionary journey. In ACTS 23:23 we find 200 soldiers, and 200 spearmen, Roman soldiers who
were sent from Jerusalem with Paul, along with 70 horsemen, as Paul started that fourth missionary
journey, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, a journey which took him from Jerusalem to eventually Rome:
ACTS 23:23. The 200 soldiers, and the 200 spearmen are used here to PROVE to us that the Lord
himself again knew what he would do, and that he would do as he had said, that is, take Paul “a
chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before kings”. As part of this story, recall that the number
70 pointed to RULERSHIP, and that it was the 70 horsemen who delivered Paul to one of those
rulers, Felix.
In DEUTERONOMY 7:5 and 26 we read specific instructions given to Israel;
DEUTERONOMY 5 & 26. In JOSHUA 7, a man named Achan PROVED that these instructions
were true. Without reading all the events of JOSHUA 7, let’s focus on verses 20-25. Here note that
one of the things Achan had taken was 200 shekels of silver (verse 21). 200 is a number, for us,
used to PROVE something, for the Lord himself already knows what he will do. Here Achan,
unfortunately for Achan, PROVED indeed that the words of the Lord were true.
So, we see that the number 200 is used, for us, to PROVE something. I don’t know exactly
what happened to the tribe of Dan, but I believe the number 200 can be used to PROVE one thing
behind the question what happened to Dan? The sons of Jacob (Israel) were 12, I CHRONICLES
2:1-2. All of these are the original 12 tribes of Israel, GENESIS 49:28. By the time of
REVELATION 7 we find no mention of the tribe of Dan; REVELATION 7:4-8. What happened
to the tribe of Dan? Here’s a partial answer. God gave Israel the Law, to PROVE them, EXODUS
20:1-5, 20-23. We move ahead in time a few hundred years; JUDGES 17:1-6. Here note especially
that 200 shekels of silver were used to make a graven and a molten image in the house of Micah,
Let’s jump ahead and read what became of this graven image, JUDGES 18:30-31. The tribe of
Dan doesn’t get rid of the image. More centuries pass. I KINGS 12:26-30. In our studies of the
number 21, a number associated with SIN, we pointed out that 21 times in scripture after this, it is
stated that “Jeroboam the son of Nebat made Israel to sin”. Note that it was the tribe of Dan who
was willing to accept this image of Jeroboams, and quite possibly they still had also the graven
image of Micah’s made from 200 shekels of silver. The tribe of Dan willing worshipped images,
and didn’t worship God, thus they are not mentioned in REVELATION 7. So again, we see how
the number 200 is used to PROVE something. For us the number 200 should PROVE to us that
the word of the Lord is true.
One more example is found in the story we just read about in JOHN 21, where the LORD
PROVED Himself again to the disciples. Note in JOHN 21:8 that they were 200 cubits from shore
when the Lord PROVED that the man on the shore asking the questions was indeed the Lord
53
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
Himself. So again, we see a little glimpse of how the number 200 is used for us to PROVE
something, and that something is that the word of the LORD is true, for He already knows what
He will do!
~ 300 ~
The number 300 is a very interesting number to explore in that it points us to some basic
concepts for the overcomer, as you will shortly see. During my research on the various numbers,
and their meanings, I have found that most authors give up after a while and skip numbers to hurry
up and finish their study. The number 300 was one such number, for I could find no commentary
on its meaning. As we mentioned previously, I am sure each number must have a meaning for
GOD, and we only scratch the surface in trying to define each individual one. I found 26 different
scriptures with reference to the number 300, and conclude in simplest terms, that it’s meaning, for
the most part, lies in the fact that it points us to a WARRIOR or WARRIORS.
Webster defines a WARRIOR as a man taking part or experienced in conflict, especially
war, in other words a soldier. Are you a soldier of the LORD? Are you in the LORD’s army? If
so, then you are a WARRIOR, and the number 300 will be significant to you. As we study this
topic on WARRIORS note where these WARRIORS get their strength.
The most prominent example concerning the number 300 takes us to JUDGES, where we
will first read of Gideons 300. I am hoping that you are familiar with Gideons 300, so I will only
cover the scripture highlights. JUDGES 6:1, 2, 7-14; 7:1-9; 16-22; 8:4 & 28. In simplest terms,
Gideon’s 300 men, (300 WARRIORS if you will), are a picture to us of WARRIORS of faith;
those “who through faith subdued kingdoms” (HEBREWS 11:33); those ‘‘having obtained a good
report through faith’’ (HEBREWS 11:39). This example, then, of the number 300 pointed us to
WARRIORS of the Lord, simple men of faith.
Turn to I CHRONICLES 11, where we will read a second catalogue in scripture of David’s mighty
men, WARRIORS. I CHRONICLES 11 :11 & 20. Notice that these two men, Jashobeam and
Abishai, were two of David’s WARRIORS each himself slew 300 at one time. We made a brief
reference to these same scriptures when we covered the number 37, (David had 37 mighty men
listed in II SAMUEL 23:8-39), the number 37 having to do with THE WORD OF GOD, A
WARRIOR of the Lord needs to know THE WORD OF GOD: “for THE WORD OF GOD is
quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder
of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of
the heart.” (HEBREWS 4:12).
Let me emphasize a couple of points about WARRIORS that we have covered so far. In
Gideons case, 300 WARRIORS of the Lord were chosen by passing a test from the Lord. Are you
ever tested from the Lord? David’s mighty men, two of whom we just read about, were part of a
needy group of people we first find mentioned in I SAMUEL 22:1-2. To whom does the needy
WARRIOR go for help? Are you starting to get a little better picture on what makes a WARRIOR
of the Lord?
In II CHRONICLES 9:16, which refers back to I KINGS 10:17, we read of the 300 twice
in reference to a WARRIOR’S armour. II CHRONICLES 9:13-16. Gold is a type in scripture of
perfection, deity, and divine life. A shield is a part of the WARRIOR’S armour found in
EPHESIANS 6:16 (read).
II CHRONICLES 14:1-15. Note in this portion that “Asa did that which was good and right
in the eyes of the Lord his God” (verse 2), and that “Asa cried unto the Lord his God” … “help
us” (verse 11); thus Asa, WARRIOR Asa, defeated Zerah the Ethiopian and his million soldiers,
and his 300 Chariots (verse 9). Asa went up against Zerah the Ethiopian, outnumbered by his army,
54
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
and his chariots, but a WARRIOR of the Lord knows PSALMS [Link] “Some trust in chariots, and
some in horses; but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.” Note also Asa’s army
consisted of those out of the tribe of Judah (300,000) and those out of the tribe of Benjamin.
Concerning Benjamin, we find the number 300 (for WARRIOR) in GENESIS 45:22 (read.)
In this verse Joseph is a type of Christ; silver speaks of redemption; 5 is the number of GRACE;
and Benjamin figures a WARRIOR, the number 300 starts to point this out, and so does GENESIS
49:27.
Would you consider Enoch a WARRIOR? Would you consider those in HEBREWS 11 as
WARRIORS? WARRIORS of faith? I answer yes to both questions. So, let’s see how the number
300 in Enoch’s life points this out. GENESIS 5:22. In this verse note that this WARRIOR Enoch
walked with God after he became fruitful 300 years and continued to be fruitful. HEBREWS
11:5-6. A WARRIOR of the Lord walks with the Lord, talks with the Lord, listens to the words of
the Lord, and is in harmony with the Lord. AMOS 3:3. WARRIOR Enoch left us some words from
the Lord: JUDE 14 & 15. Enoch’s life was a simple life of faith! We can learn a lot from the life
of WARRIOR Enoch.
WARRIORS
The number 300 points us to WARRIORS. In our last lesson we considered Gideon’s 300,
an unlikely group to be considered WARRIORS at first glance, none the less they are
WARRIORS. I want to spend the next few minutes focusing on Gideons 300, and their WARRIOR
qualities. And as we go over these WARRIOR qualities, I want you to note that these WARRIOR
qualities are also OVERCOMER qualities.
Concerning Gideon’s 300 first note in JUDGES 7:3 that those who were FEARFUL and
AFRAID did not qualify for WARRIORSHIP and were sent home. In other words, a WARRIOR
of the Lord has learned this lesson. found in II TIMOTHY 1:7, “For God hath not given us the
spirit of FEAR; but of power, and love, and of a sound mind.” Perhaps an expounded translation
of this verse better explains its meaning: …The spirit He has bestowed on us is not one that shrinks
from danger, but (He has given us a spirit) of power, and of love, and of calm and well-balanced
mind and discipline and self-control.” These are qualities found in a warrior. When it comes time
for battle, a WARRIOR of the Lord doesn’t count with the strength of the flesh, but with the
strength of the Lord. Like the Psalmist wrote in the 23rd PSALM, verse 4; “Yea, though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy
staff they comfort me.” Of course, the Psalmist who wrote these words was that great WARRIOR
David himself.
Secondly, Gideons 300 were chosen by God to be WARRIORS, JUDGES 7:4-6. Those
that God chose were the 300 who were paying attention while they lapped the water with their
hand. The majority, (not Gideons 300), were caught up with their own selfish desires, and forgot
for a moment that they were in the presence of an enemy. In other words, God’s WARRIORS were
chosen by God, having passed his test, and they had these qualities: They knew something, (in this
case they knew that there was going to be a battle, for they were in the presence of their enemies),
so they were ALERT and WATCHFUL and AWARE of the time and place they were in. These
WARRIORS figure men of FAITH, not consumed with their own lust, but men who were looking
to the Lord for help. I CORINTHIANS 1:26-3l.
Third, note these WARRIORS equipment; JUDGES 7:16. Each of Gideon’s WARRIORS
55
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
had a TRUMPET, a PITCHER, and a LAMP. A TRUMPET speaks of telling the TRUTH, a
WARRIOR of the Lord KNOWS the TRUTH, and like those of Berea in Paul’s day, they receive
the WORD with all readiness of mind, and search the scriptures DAILY, (ACTS 17:11). They
study to shew themselves approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly
dividing the word of truth, (II TIMOTHY 2:15). Each of Gideon’s WARRIORS had a PITCHER.
A PITCHER was an earthen vessel. Paul wrote: ‘‘But we have this treasure in EARTHEN
VESSELS, that the excellency of the power MAY BE OF GOD, and NOT OF US”. (II
CORINTHIAN 4:7). In other words, A WARRIOR trusts in the LORD and not in himself. Each
of Gideons WARRIORS had a lamp. PSALMS [Link] “Thy word is a LAMP unto my feet, and
a LIGHT unto my path.” II CORINTHIANS 4:3 -7.
Forth, note that these WARRIORS of Gideon were good OBEDIENT FOLLOWERS;
JUDGES 7:16-20. These 300 WARRIORS followed Gideon’s instructions. Again, Paul wrote to
us in I CORINTHIANS 11:1; “Be ye FOLLOWERS of me, even as I also am of Christ.”
Next, Gideon’s WARRIORS in the time of battle, STOOD THEIR GROUND and the
LORD fought the battle for them; JUDGES 7:21-22; EPHESIANS 6:13-14. Why did the
Midianites flee? The Midianites fled Gideon’s 300 because they thought a great army was upon
them, for in that day only captains of thousands had trumpets and lamps. The Midianites in
darkness looked up and saw 300 lights and heard 300 trumpets and assumed at least 300,000 men
of war were fast upon them. In reality it was just Gideon and his 300 FAITHFUL WARRIORS
plus GOD.
Finally, note this last point concerning Gideon’s WARRIORS the battle wasn’t over
against Midian all at once. The next day we find Gideon’s faithful 300 “FAINT yet PURSUING”;
JUDGES 8:4. Gideons WARRIORS had a GOAL in mind. That is why they were still pursuing,
though faint. A true WARRIOR of the Lord has a GOAL in mind, that goal is to win something,
that is to have God’s best, to be in the Bride of Christ, and though maybe FAINT, the WARRIOR
is yet pursuing. PHILIPPIANS 3:13-14.
So, to briefly review Gideon’s 300, Gideons WARRIORS, they were CHOSEN by God
from among those who were not AFRAID and not FEARFUL; one’s who were ALERT, AWARE
AWAKE AND WATCHFUL, those who were equipped of the Lord, and were found to be
OBEDIENT FAITHFUL FOLLOWERS. They possessed: no other special qualities. The world
would. look on them as nobodies. We find them mentioned in passing in HEBREWS 11, our
catalog of the Old Testament WORTHIES OF FAITH, (the Old Testament OVERCOMERS if
you will); HEBREWS 11:33-34. Gideon’s WARRIORS were those “who through faith subdued
kingdoms,” “out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies
of the aliens.” Are you. starting to get a better picture of what a WARRIOR of the LORD looks
like? They look like an OVERCOMER!
In concluding my thoughts on the number 300 and how it points us to a WARRIOR
especially a WARRIOR of the Lord, let me refer us to the following scriptures: DEUTERONOMY
20:1-4; I SAMUEL17:47; II TIMOTHY 4:7-8 and EPHESIANS 6:10-18.
~ 400 ~
By now I am sure that you realize every number has some significance of meaning to God
the creator, we just haven’t discovered very many of their individual meanings yet. Each number
56
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
is unique, and yet as we progress through the numbers, we have found their meaning as building
blocks for numbers yet to come, bringing to mind the concept for “precept must be upon precept,
precept upon precept: line upon line, line upon line: here a little, and there a little.” (ISAIAH
28:10). I will use the number 400 as an illustration to this point. The number 400 is found 20 times
in scripture, and may have its own particular meaning, but as of yet I haven’t discovered its
individual meaning. The building blocks which equal the number 400 are good to review. the
number 400 is 4 X 100; in other words, 4 (HUMAN WEAKNESS; MAN’S WEAKNESS; the
EARTHLY NUMBER; the CREATION NUMBER) times 100 (COMPLETION) equals 400. 400
equals 20 times 20, or REDEMPTION squared. 400 is the product of 50 (PENTECOST) times 8
(NEW CREATION; NEW BIRTH; NEW BEGINNING; RESSURECTION). 400 is 25 (THE
FORGIVENESS of SINS) times 16 (LOVE). 400 is 40 (PERFECT TESTING) times 10
(RESPONSIBILITY ACCORDINTGO ABILITY). The number 400 is 200 (to PROVE
something) times 2 (SUFFICIENT TESTIMONY). So, at the least, when you come across the
number 400 in your studies, consider it a number which causes you to review the meanings of its
factors, as is the case with all of the numbers.
~ 600 ~
The number 600 has to do with WARFARE or weapons of WARFARE. We find this
number by itself 17 times in scripture. Recall that 17 was a number of VICTORY IN CHRIST
JESUS. The whole purpose of WARFARE is to obtain a VICTORY. For a Christian this
VICTORY in his battles comes from CHRIST JESUS. 600 is twice 300, in other words 2 times
300. 2 we found was also a number of JESUS. 300 was a number pointing to WARRIORS. JESUS
is the victory. Christian WARRIORS waging WARFARE have the VICTORY IN CHRIST
JESUS. In the following examples notice how the number 600 is connected with WARFARE or
implements of WARFARE.
In EXODUS 4:7 we find 600 chosen chariots of Pharaoh, a chariot being used as an
implement of WARFARE. EXODUS 14:5-7, 13-14, 22-28.
In JUDGES 3:31, Shamgar slew 600 Philistines with an ox goad. In this case the ox goad
was an implement of WARFARE. JUDGES 3 :31.
In JUDGES 18:11-17 we find mentioned 3 times 600 men appointed with weapons of war,
600 again has to do with WARFARE. JUDGES 18:11-17.
In JUDGES 20 we find civil war between Israel and Benjamin. In verse 47, 600 warriors
of this WARFARE flee unto the rock Rimmon. JUDGES 20:47.
In I SAMUEL 17:7 we find Goliath’s spear head, a weapon of WARFARE weighed 600
shekels of Iron. I SAMUEL 17:7.
In I SAMUEL 23:13; 27:2; and 30:9 we find that David had about 600 men with him. I
SAMUEL 23:13; 27:2 and 30:1-18.
In Solomon’s time we find the price of a chariot was 600 shekels of silver. I KINGS 10:29.
600 is a number that has to do with WARFARE.
~ 666 ~
By now in our study of the numbers and their meanings, I am sure you have noticed that
God gave each number a meaning, and that he built upon these numbers to give meanings to later
numbers, The number 666 is a number whose meaning is explained in scripture; a number built
from earlier numbers and is done so in the following fashion. Recall the number 6. 6 was a number
of man. 666 is man’s number in triple form. Six also was a number of Satan. 666 is Satan’s number
57
THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
in triple form. 6 was also a number of Satan’s influence over worldly man. 666 is Satan’s influence
over worldly man in triple form. Also recall that 6 + 6 + 6 = 18, 18 being the number for bondage.
Concerning 18, (6 + 6 + 6), remember that we found 18 different names for Satan in scripture; (1)
Beelzebub, (2) Devil, (3) dragon, (4) Lucifer, (5) prince, (6) Satan, (7) adder, (8) adversary, (9)
Belial, (10) leviathan, (11) star, (12) wormwood, (1) tempter (14) destroyer, (15) devourer, (16)
serpent, (17)wicked one, and (18) enemy. All of the above is said as an introduction to the number
666, Six Hundred Three-Score and Six, which we find mentioned two times in scripture:
REVELATION 13:18 and I KINGS 10:14.
Notice first of all that this number 666 is THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST. We find two
Greek words in REVELATION translated BEAST. The first word ‘beast’ (zoon) is the word used
in REVELATION 4 & 6 meaning “a live thing”, which we also call “living creatures.” The second
word “beast” (theron) is found in the rest of REVELATION meaning “a dangerous animal;
venomous, wild) beast”. This is the meaning we find in REVELATION 13; “count the number of
the dangerous, wild, venomous beast”.
Second, note “it is the number of a man”, Brother Copley notes that it is a depraved man,
Satan assisting him, He is to us anti-Christ. So, the number 666 is commonly referred to as the
NUMBER OF THE BEAST, or ANTI-CHRIST.
The Apostle John is the only one in scripture who uses the term ANTI-CHRIST. The
meaning of ANTI-CHRIST is “an opponent of the Messiah”, “against Christ.” I JOHN 2:18, 22
and 4:2-4.
Let me expound a little more about REVELATIOIN 3:18. ‘‘Here is wisdom”. We
don’t need the wisdom of this world; we need the wisdom of God! I CORINTHIANS 3:18-20.
Brother Copley again asks this question in his book on REVELATION: “Why then are the national
rulers called ‘BEASTS’? … Answer, because they do not reign according to the wisdom of God”;
We also must realize that “the rulers that be are ordained of God”; ROMANS 13:1; DANIEL 4:17,
25, 32, 35; 5:21.
REVELATION 13:11-17, What is the number of his name? REVELATION 13;18. Here
is a couple of additional points. Earlier in our study we pointed out that Greeks and Hebrews, and
others, wrote numbers by assigning numeric values to letters according to how they were placed
in an arrangement of letters, similar to the way we count by Roman numerals. There are a few
Greek words whose numeric value adds up to 666. One of these words in “PARADOSIS”, the
Greek word for TRADITION. MARK7:1-23 (the same story is found in MATTHEW 15:1-20).
Note in MARK 7:9 that they rejected the commandment of God in favor if TRADITION.
TRADITION may be against Christ, that is ANTI-CHRIST; in other words, stamped with the
number 666. Remember the story Brother Hill told us of dealing with those steeped in religion up
at Regis who told him; “you have the scriptures, but we have TRADITION.” They were in other
words saying to him. “You have Christ, but we have ANTI-CHRIST”. Think about it for a second.
In MARK 7:21-22 we read of 13 things which come from within and defile the man; 13 was the
number for REBELLION. The word TRADITION is found also 13 times in scripture, once
positively in II THESSALONIANS 2:13-17.
ACTS 19:10-12, 20, 23-28. In verse 25 we find the word “wealth”. The word “wealth” here
in Greek is “EUPORIA” and adds up to 666. Those silver smiths made images against-Christ,
ANTI-CHRISTs, silver shrines for their goddess Diana. By this craft these silver smiths received
their wealth. REVELATION 13:15. God is not against wealth. He made Solomon the wealthiest
man who ever lived. These silver smiths at Ephesus made their living promoting things against
Christ, thus the negative meaning for wealth as used here.

THE MEANING OF BIBLE NUMBERS
~ THOUSAND ~
The number THOUSAND points us to all the larger numbers. Stated another way, most all of the
largest numbers mentioned in the Bible are some multiple of a THOUSAND. The number 1000 (a
THOUSAND) in simplest terms, points us to THE GLORY OF GOD. I myself cannot explain
THE GLORY OF GOD, but I can find many scriptures concerning a THOUSAND or it’s
multiples, which in turn points us toward THE GLORY OF GOD.
Early on in our study of the Bible numbers we found that the number 1 was a number
pointing us to GOD. GENESIS 1:1 “In the beginning God… “. God was there in the beginning; in
other words, God was first, God was number one; God is number 1, God created the first day, day
number 1, in GENESIS 1:5. No man has ever created a day, nor ever will. PETER tells us
something about 1 day, that shows us a glimpse of THE GLORY OF GOD; II PETER 3:8. The
number a THOUSAND (1000) points us to THE GLORY OF GOD. PSALMS 90:4.
In a recent Sunday lesson, we found in EZEKIEL 47:3-6 the term “a THOUSAND”
mentioned 4 times, showing us that as we go on with God, we get a better picture of THE GLORY
OF GOD.
We considered Samson when we studied the number 1, pointing out that one with God is
a majority, Now, that we have a better background on the different meanings of the numbers in
scripture, let’s read again some verses on Samson. JUDGES 15:4-5, (300 having to do with a
WARRIOR), JUDGES 15:14-20, a THOUSAND (verses 15-16) points us to THE GLORY OF
GOD, for obviously the power of God came upon Samson enabling him to slay a THOUSAND
men.
On your own, study REVELATION 20 and see for yourself THE GLORY OF GOD in the
number THOUSAND.
The number 1 was the beginning of numbers and pointed us to GOD. All numbers are
divisible by 1, God is in all the numbers. The number 1000 (a THOUSAND) is the beginning of
the larger numbers and points us to THE GLORY OF GOD. The following examples show
multiples of a THOUSAND and further point us to THE GLORY OF GOD. LEVITICUS 26:8;
PSALMS 91:7; DANIEL 7:9-10; I SAMUEL18:6-8 (the reason that to David was ascribed ten
THOUSANDS was that he was anointed king and that the Spirit of the Lord was upon David
showing us again THE GLORY OF GOD can be found concerning the number a THOUSAND
and its multiples; I SAMUEL 16:1, 7, 11-13).
In these following scriptures concerning Abraham and Israel note the multiples of a
THOUSAND and how they point us to THE GLORY OF GOD. GENESIS 15:1-6; 17:1-7; 22:15-
18; 24:60; DEUTERONOMY 1:8-11; and 7:9.
We have now come full circle in our study of numbers in the Bible and what they represent.
Our introduction to this study started with zero (o), (nothing) and infinity (eternity), We have
covered but a limited number of the numbers and their meanings and found God’s plan in each of
them. As a concluding thought on this numbers study let me give you a brief list of some of the
largest numbers found in scripture; numbers which further point to THE GLORYO F GOD.
“Thousands of millions” (GENESIS 24: 60) (the only mention of million in scripture)
“As the stars of heaven for multitude” (DEUTERONOMY 1:1 0)
“As the sand of the sea which cannot be numbered for· multitude” (GENESIS 32:12}
“And the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands
of thousands” (REVELATION5 :11)
