Total Station and its applications

1. Explain the equation used to calculate the distances using EDM instruments.
2. What are the basic measurements of the Total Station ?
3. The distance between two points (A) and (B) was measured using a Total Station. If
the measured distance was 445.66m, the vertical angle AB = 2˚32΄54˝ and the azimuth
of line AB = 124˚20΄35˝. If the coordinates of (A) were (120.45, 65.50 )m, calculate
the coordinates of (B) .
4. A total station at point (A) was aimed at the prism which was placed at point (B). The
measured distance was 95.25m and the vertical angle was depression angle =
5˚32΄20˝.The total station height was 1.55m and the prism height was 1.70m. If the
reduced level of point (A) is 22.40m , calculate the reduced level of point (B).
[Link] following observations were taken with a total station:
Total Prism Horizontal Vertical angle Slope
Station reading distance
A B 20˚12΄14˝ 2˚52΄34˝ 67.364m
C 65˚13΄25˝ 5˚43΄25˝ 80.545m
Calculate the horizontal and vertical distances between points B and C .

6. To determine the height of a steel communication tower, a total station was aimed at
the prism which was placed at the bottom of the tower. The measured distance was
50.25m and the vertical angle was depression angle = 5˚32΄20˝.The total station was
then aimed at the top of the tower and the vertical angle was elevation angle =
57˚45΄22˝. If height of the prism was 1.40m , calculate the height of the tower above
ground.
7. The following table indicates the coordinates of station (A) and coordinates P1, P2, P3,
P4 for corners of building. Find distances and azimuths from station A to other points
and put the data in suitable table for setting out with surveying equipment:
..
Point E N
A 3500 m 4000 m
P1 3000 m 3150 m
P2 3000 m 2750
P3 2500 m 2750 m
P4 2500 m 3150 m
