AMAZING MATH RACE

This math race will have students working on new challenges, solving problems, and
empowering them to go beyond numbers into mathematical thought. The game is a play-off of
the TV reality show Amazing Race, where contestants complete challenges to move on to the
next one. To complete this race students will need to have a basic understanding of Basic
Mathematics. They may work with others to help solve the problems.

Objectives:
a. To provide opportunities for learners to make sense of mathematical experiences and develop
skills and attitudes needed for effective participation in everyday living through games and
activities.
b. To allow learners from Basic Education to develop mathematical skills at full potential.
c. To create an academic, competitive yet friendly atmosphere in pursuing excellence in the field
of mathematics.

Mechanics and Guidelines

1. Each team shall compose of 6 members.
2. All team members must be in their classified uniform (team color) and wear their IDs at any
time for easy identification. Only a ballpen or sign pen can be used to solve all the contest
problems.
3. Borrowing or lending of calculators between or among teams is strictly prohibited and is a
ground for automatic disqualification.
4. Coaches or teachers are not allowed to enter the contest area so as not to disrupt the
proceeding of the contest.
5. Bringing or using of mobile phone, MP3, MP4, tablets, Ipod, or any gadgets is not allowed
during the competition. Each team is required to bring a calculator and all forms of measuring
devices.
6. The competition is composed of 5 checkpoints or stations. A station contains important
information needed to answer a particular problem given by the station commander. Every team
must get whatever data/information that each station may provide or suggest.
7. The competition is good for one and half hours (1.5 hrs), inclusive of the data gathering and
answering of the contest’s problems.
8. Each team will stay in a checkpoint for an allotted time (15 minutes). The Station Commander
will announce the starting and ending time for the team to be in a particular station.
9. There should be no more than 2 teams allowed to be at one checkpoint.
10. No member of the team is allowed to mark, erase, deface, tear, crease, add or alter any
figures, arrangements, and lines position of any materials placed in each station for the purpose
of measurement. Any member of the team who is caught violating this rule means automatic
disqualification of the whole team.
11. The decision of the Board of Judges is irrevocable and final.

By forbidding external interference, participants must rely on their knowledge and capabilities, promoting self-reliance and independence. This rule encourages students to trust their instincts and decision-making processes, potentially boosting confidence as they realize their ability to tackle mathematical challenges without external input. Such autonomous experiences can lead to increased self-efficacy in educational and practical contexts .

The rules ensure fairness by prohibiting sharing of calculators, forbidding external assistance from coaches, and banning electronic devices, which could level the playing field and prevent cheating. The uniform dress code and identification requirements streamline monitoring, while the strict consequences for violating rules, such as disqualification for altering materials, uphold integrity. The fixed time at each station and rotation system prevent any team from gaining an unfair time advantage .

This rule might push teams to depend on their collective problem-solving abilities and optimize internal resource management. It may encourage members to practice mental calculations and improve their mathematical fluency. Teams would potentially focus on leveraging each member's strengths, thereby fostering collaboration and enhancing group problem-solving dynamics .

The mechanics, such as team-based challenges and strict adherence to rules, create a structured and competitive yet educational atmosphere conducive to learning. The guidelines prevent distractions and unfair advantages, ensuring that focus remains on mathematical exploration and skill development. These elements not only foster a deeper understanding of mathematics but also cultivate practical problem-solving skills and teamwork, aligning with the objectives of skill enhancement and excellence in mathematics .

Participants would likely use time management skills to quickly assess the station's requirements and allocate time appropriately between data gathering and solving the problems. Team members might be assigned specific roles, such as data collection, problem-solving, or timekeeping, to ensure efficiency. They would also need to prioritize tasks based on complexity to maximize productivity in the 15-minute timeframe .

The race format encourages development of teamwork, communication, and leadership skills as students collaborate to solve problems. Participants must organize efforts, assign roles, and harness each member's strengths, which enhances their ability to work effectively in groups. The need to adhere to strict guidelines and time constraints also fosters discipline and better decision-making abilities .

The fixed timeframe encourages students to quickly assess situations, prioritize tasks, and make decisions under pressure, mirroring real-world scenarios where time management is crucial. This practice can enhance cognitive flexibility and resilience, promoting strategic planning and efficient problem-solving. Such skills are transferable beyond mathematics, benefiting students in academic and everyday decision-making contexts .

The prohibition of electronic devices requires participants to rely more on their basic mathematical skills and teamwork instead of digital aids. This restriction promotes mental math and critical thinking, potentially leveling the playing field by not allowing teams to gain an unfair advantage through technology. It emphasizes understanding and practical problem-solving over computation speed .

Team dynamics are crucial as they determine how effectively roles and responsibilities are shared, impacting problem-solving efficiency. Good communication, trust, and synergy among team members can lead to optimized data gathering and problem-solving processes. Conversely, poor dynamics could lead to miscommunication and inefficiencies, negatively affecting the team's performance in the limited time available .

The competition promotes mathematical skills by engaging learners in problem-solving tasks that require application of math in real-life scenarios. The race's structured yet competitive environment encourages collaboration and critical thinking, enabling participants to enhance their understanding and adaptability in diverse situations. It integrates experiential learning with academic objectives, fostering applied knowledge and encouraging math-related confidence and enthusiasm .
