Quarter 3 – Module 6:
The Wonders of Light
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to
use this module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress
while allowing them to manage their own learning at home.
Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as
they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:
As a learner, you must learn to become responsible of your own
learning. Take time to read, understand, and perform the different
activities in the module.
As you go through the different activities of this module be
reminded of the following:
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any
part of the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the
exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer Let Us Try before moving on to the other
activities.
3. Read the instructions carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking
your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are done.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this
module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always
bear in mind that you are not alone. We hope that through this material,
you will experience meaningful learning and gain deep understanding
of the relevant competencies. You can do it!

Let Us Learn
Hello young scientist! Time to explore again the awesome science!
Now you know that the light coming from the sun travels in a
straight line. Perhaps you are wondering what exactly happens to
the light when it reaches Earth. In this module, you will learn the
properties and characteristics of light.
Specifically, you are expected to:
• Understand the characteristics of light when it strikes
different kinds of materials or objects.
• Describe how light is reflected, refracted, and absorbed.
Let Us Try!
Read the questions carefully. Choose the best answer and write
this on a separate sheet of paper.

smooth and shiny opaque surface?
A. It is reflected.
B. It is refracted.

D. It is retained.
3. What happens to the light when it appears bent as it goes
through a translucent material?

Let Us Study
Get a handheld mirror and place it in front of you. Look at the
image you see on the mirror. Refer to the picture below as your
guide.
Questions:
1. What did you see on the mirror?
2. Does the image have color?
3. Where do you think the image on the mirror comes from?
4. Why is an image seen on the mirror?

Characteristics of Light
Light is a form of energy from the sun that travels in a straight
line. When it strikes an object, that energy has to go somewhere.
The behavior of light differs depending on the type of surface or
material it hits on.
Materials that allow light to completely pass through are
transparent materials. They usually do not have color and are
clear. Examples of these are: clear glass just like the one being
used in aquariums, clear plastic that you see on a face shield,
water, and air.
Fig. 1. Examples of transparent materials
Some materials allow some light to travel through them and these
are what we call translucent materials. They are not clear and
are usually frosted. Some examples of translucent materials are
the plastic bags being used in the supermarket, frosted glass or
plastic such as the ones used in your ruler, and wax paper that is
used in baking. When light passes through translucent materials,
not all of the light can go through.
Fig. 2. Examples of translucent materials
3
Opaque materials block the passage of light. They are usually
solid and colored. Examples of opaque materials are wood, stones,
metals, concrete, rubber, and cotton.
Fig. 3. Examples of opaque materials
How Light is Reflected, Refracted, and Absorbed
When light hits the surface of different materials, there are three
ways that could happen (Woodford 2020); (1) it will pass through,
(2) it will reflect, and (3) it will sink in or be absorbed.
Light travels in a straight line and when it hits a smooth and shiny
opaque surface, that light bounces off and gets reflected. This
bouncing of light is reflection.
light
Fig. 4. Light is reflected on a smooth
and shiny opaque surface
When you placed the mirror in front of you, you saw a colored
image of yourself. The image comes from the light that is bounced
off when it hits the smooth shiny surface of the mirror. The light
goes to a different direction towards your face and your eyes. There
was reflection of light and this is why we could see our own image
on the mirror.
4
Fig. 5. Light bounces off when it hits the mirror.
There are some materials that are not capable of reflecting light.
When light hits a rough and textured opaque surface of a material,
the light sinks in and disappear as there is no bouncing of light.
light
Fig. 6. Light sinks in and is absorbed by
the rough and textured opaque surface.
Materials that do not reflect light do not show a reflection.
Examples of these are paper, rocks, leather, rubber, concrete,
cotton, metal, wood, plastic, and cloth.
Fig. 7. Light from the sun is absorbed by the rocks
5
When light strikes the surface of translucent materials, it goes
through but not all of it.
light
Fig. 8. Light passes through a translucent material
The light can travel through the material in an angled or bent
direction because the speed of the light is slowed down as it goes
through. Light travels much slower in translucent materials that
is why it appears refracted or bent. The bending of light is called
refraction.

Let Us Practice
Activity 1: Transparent, Translucent, or Opaque?
Direction: Get the following materials listed on the table below and
a flashlight. Go to a slightly dimmed room and direct the flashlight
on each material. Observe if the light from the flashlight passed
through or not. Determine whether the material is transparent,
translucent, or opaque. Put a check (√) mark on the proper
column. Refer to the example as guide.
Materials Transparent Translucent Opaque
Example: Leather bag √
1. empty plastic bottle of
softdrinks
2. book
3. aluminum foil
4. wooden spoon
5. eyeglasses
6. vegetable oil in a clear
glass
7. colored glass pitcher
8. ladies’ stockings
9. curtain
10. pot holder
7
Let Us Practice More
Activity 2. Is it a reflection or a refraction?
Direction: Get a clear glass and half-fill it with water. Place your
pencil inside and look towards it at eye level.
A. Questions: How does the pencil appear? ____________________
Is the light reflected or refracted? ________________
Next, get an empty dark glass bottle of a syrup medicine or
vitamins (e.g. Ceelin or Pediazinc bottle) and a dry metal spoon.
Place it in front of you.
B. Question: Can you see yourself on the glass bottle?___________
How about on the spoon?__________________________
Is the light reflected or refracted? __________________

Let Us Remember
Light travels in straight line. It is capable of passing through an
object, bounce off to a different direction, or gets absorbed.
• Smooth and shiny opaque surfaces make light to bounce off
in a different direction and we call this reflection.
• When light hits a rough opaque surface, light gets absorbed.
• Light can pass through transparent objects but it will be
bent, and this is what we call a refraction.
Let Us Assess
Read the questions carefully. Choose the best answer and write
this on a separate sheet of paper.
1. Which of the following will absorb light?
A. clouds C. water
B. leaves D. wind
2. What will happen when you place a cardboard in front of a
working flashlight?
A. The light from the flashlight will wave.
B. The light from the flashlight will be blocked.
C. The light from the flashlight will change its color.
D. The light from the flashlight will go in different
directions.
3. Why do you think the headlight of a car is placed at the
front and not on the sides?
A. So the car will run faster.
B. So the car will look cooler.
C. So the driver can hear the other moving vehicles.
D. So the driver will see where he/she is going when
driving in the dark.

Activity 3: What will happen to the light?
Direction: Determine whether the following objects are capable of
reflecting, absorbing, or refracting light. Write X if it can reflect, Y
if it can refract, and Z if it can absorb.

Let Us Reflect
The reflection and refraction of light is very important in our daily
lives and have been applied in many technologies such as the
microscope, telescope, binoculars, cameras, and even in your
reading glasses. Without the bouncing off of light, humans will not
be able to see the beauty of our surroundings.
