The assignment is to write a short story based on any of the topics learned during the course.

I have
chosen to write a short story based on WEEK 3: Climate Fiction and Solarpunk and WEEK 4: Diverse
Futurisms, Political Visions, and Visionary Fiction.

I was planning to write something based on 2018 floods, which happened in Kerala, India. Kerala has
not witnessed any massive floods till then. I was planning to be protagonist in the story. I got married
during Kerala floods. Marriage is one of the biggest things for parents in India and they are so much
looking forward to that day since the birth of the baby girl. My mother works in revenue department
and was in charge for the relief camps opened. She was there in relief camps and devastated to see
the people waiting in queue for food trucks. India is an emerging economy but we have not
witnessed anything like this in our life time.

Our place was not really affected by floods but low lying places in 50 kms was. My marriage was fixed
to be conduced during this time. As postponing the marriage would result in huge financial burden to
cancel all arrangements and redo again, we decide to go forward with it. but the groom was stuck in
his work place and could reach home as the flights were cancelled and roads were destroyed.

It made the situation worse at home, relative skeptical about the marriage and I did not know what to
do. My family started questioning my decision. Unrust situation at home. WE live on the national
highways, Hear ambulances, fire fore, police vans passing by every 15 minutes or [Link] sister is an
active NGO worker, really wanted to help out at relief camps but could not go due to marriage. My
mother has to take leave from work due to marriage. My real close friend could not come due to lack
of transportation. Every hours news of people dying, Most happiest days of my family turned into
mourning. So much things to rearrange, invited 1500 people arranged food and stay for close friend
sand family. Not sure how many can come but the food and stay cannot be cancelled and hence
would go waste. The marriage would comprise of different small functions, “haldi”, add few names
here. But all were cancelled as it did not made sense to celebrate when my state was suffering.

News about the shutter of dam being opened with out proper planning. The dam was built long back,
include some history of “Mullaperiyar dam” and related controversies and age and safety issues. It
made the floods worse. Many dams’ shutters were opened and it made peoples life hell. As dams
were not built initially to hold water or control flood, they had to open it when it reached the
capacity. All the waste that were thrown into river over decades were flashed back to the land to the
people.

The state police, the fire force, NGOs, people , air force were struggling to help. One group rose to eth
help people stranded in flood affected areas and isolated from the main land, the fisher men
(develop this based on community futurism). The worked day in and out to help people. they took
their boats , rowed it over the national, state highways to help people, they put their life on threat
and helped people.

Another phase – future, where house and people adapted to meet the recuring floods, year after
year. Flood relief force developed from fisher men community, who has been going to sea for
generations and training has been given from their traditional knowledge.

Include new interesting technologies to face the recuring floods, new punk methods, new science
fiction technologies. Also include traditional methods from fisher men community to adapt and
mitigate floods.

momentous occasion in our lives. However, the torrential downpour and the resulting floods had
turned our joyous celebration into a chaotic affair filled with uncertainty.

My mother, a dedicated government employee in the revenue department, was actively involved in
the relief efforts. She witnessed firsthand the immense suffering of those displaced by the floods. It
was heartbreaking to see people standing in long queues, waiting anxiously for food trucks to arrive.
The scenes were a stark reminder of the disparity between our country's emerging economy and the
hardships faced by ordinary citizens during times of crisis.

Although our immediate surroundings were spared from the worst of the floods, nearby low-lying
areas bore the brunt of the disaster. This added to the unease within our household as the groom,
stuck in his workplace due to cancelled flights and impassable roads, was unable to return home. This
unexpected turn of events only intensified the concerns of our relatives, who grew doubtful about
proceeding with the wedding.

Living near the national highways, the constant sound of sirens from ambulances, fire trucks, and
police vehicles served as a haunting reminder of the gravity of the situation. It felt as though our
entire state was under siege, with the wailing sirens cutting through the waterlogged streets every
fifteen minutes or so.
The floodwaters continued to rise, and so did the distress within our home. My sister, who actively
volunteered for an NGO, was eager to lend a helping hand at the relief camps. However, the
impending marriage preparations prevented her from participating in the noble cause. Adding to the
turmoil, my mother had to take time off work, further straining our already burdened finances.

Amidst the chaos, my closest friend, who had eagerly anticipated the joyous occasion, found herself
unable to attend due to the lack of transportation options caused by the floods. The grand
celebration we had envisioned, filled with laughter and happiness, now felt like a cruel irony in the
face of the overwhelming tragedy unfolding outside our doorstep.

Every passing hour brought news of more lives lost and families torn apart. The days that were meant
to be the happiest for my family turned into days of mourning and despair. It became evident that
going ahead with the wedding would be an affront to the suffering endured by our state and its
people.

With heavy hearts, we made the agonizing decision to cancel the various small pre-wedding
functions. The vibrant haldi ceremony, the rhythmic melodies of traditional songs, and the laughter of
friends and family—all of these were silenced as a mark of respect and solidarity with those whose
lives had been shattered by the floods.

As the rain continued to pour outside, news spread of the controversial decision to open the dam's
gates. The Mullaperiyar dam, infamous for its history of disputes and safety concerns, was ill-
equipped to handle the overwhelming force of the floodwaters. Opening the gates, although
necessary to prevent the dam from reaching its capacity, only worsened the suffering of the people
living downstream.

The floodwaters carried with them the accumulated waste of decades, serving as a stark reminder of
the consequences of neglecting our environment. Rivers swelled with debris, mercilessly depositing it
back onto the land, compounding the misery faced by those already devastated by the floods.

fisherfolk community. These brave individuals, who had spent their lives navigating the sea, stepped
