NETICA APPLICATION 6.07

--- NOTICE for Excel/Access Users --- [Link] is now the 64-bit version of
Netica, which is faster and can handle larger data sets. Unfortunately, it will not work
with Excel unless you are using the 64-bit version of Excel with a 64-bit ODBC driver.
To work with the 32-bit version of Excel use the 32-bit version of Netica, which is
[Link], in the same directory. A 64-bit ODBC driver for Excel and Access may
be obtained from: [Link]

LICENSE AGREEMENT

Before using Netica, make sure you accept the license agreement, which is included with this
package. If not, return Netica unused for a refund.

INSTALLATION

Requirements: Netica Application (the regular 64 bit version) requires any Microsoft
Windows from Windows 7 or later (including 10, 8.1). The 32 bit version can also
work on older versions of Windows, and requires Windows XP or later (including
Vista, 7, 8.1, 10). If you need a version of Netica for an earlier version of Windows,
then contact Norsys. Installation requires less than 10 MB of hard disk space. Netica
will run well even on a very slow PC (0.4 GHz), using very little RAM (about 30 MB
above OS), but working with complex Bayes nets may require much more speed and
large amounts of RAM.

Install: First obtain the Netica package file. You may obtain it by downloading from
the Norsys website ([Link] or otherwise from Norsys.
The name of the file will be Netica_Win.exe (unless you have downloaded a special
version).

Choose “Run” from the download dialog box, or save the file to disk and then double-
click its icon. When a dialog box appears, enter where on your hard disk you want the
Netica folder placed. You can put it anywhere you wish; popular choices are “C:\
Netica ” or “C:\Program Files\Netica”. Make sure there is a drive letter (e.g. “C:\ ”)
at the front of the location. You don’t have to include version information in the name,
because a folder called Netica ### will be created within it, where ### is the version
number. Click the UnZip button and then close the dialog box.

Running: Then, open the Netica ### folder from where you had it placed. Within it
will be the icon for the Netica program having a light blue square inscribed in a large
dark blue one, for file Netica (or [Link]). You can double-click it to run it, but to
fully register it in the system you must run it once by right-clicking on it, and choosing
“Run as administrator". If you wish to use the 32 bit version of Netica instead of the
usual 64 bit version, double click [Link] instead (and see “Multiple Versions”
below).
If you wish Netica to be on your Start menu, you can use the normal Windows method
of dragging the [Link] icon from the Netica ### folder and dropping it on the Start
button. Or drag it to the desktop if you want to make a shortcut there.

Password: When you run it, the enter-password dialog box will appear, so if you
obtained a license password from Norsys by email or on your invoice, you may type it
in, or better yet copy and paste it in. If you later wish to change or remove the
password, choose File→Netica Password from Netica’s menu. You can use Netica
without a password, and it will operate in a full featured and useful manner, but will not
be able to do larger projects (i.e. can’t save nets with more than 15 nodes, learn from
more than 1000 cases at a time, etc.).

You can move the Netica folder to wherever you want on your hard drive at any time.
After moving it, to have it fully registered, you may need to run Netica directly once by
right-clicking on it, and choosing “Run as administrator" to register the new location.

Multiple Versions: If you have several different versions of Netica on your hard disk
at the same time, one of them will be the "default" (e.g. it will be the one that will run
when you double-click a Netica document). To change the default, simply manually
run once the version of Netica you wish to be default by right-clicking directly on its
icon, i.e. the [Link] file and choosing “Run as administrator". There is never any
need to uninstall any Netica version before installing any new one.

Uninstall: To uninstall Netica first run it and choose File→Netica Password (to
remove your password if you had one, and remove Windows Registry entries). Then
just delete the “Netica” folder. Netica does not add any other files anywhere in your
system (except of course .neta, .dne or .cas documents that you create get placed where
you save them). If you have several versions of Netica, you can uninstall one version
by simply deleting its folder; that won’t delete any files needed by any other version.

NEXT STEPS

If you are unfamiliar with Netica, then when it is started, choose Help→Help from the
menu. Read a few pages in the beginning, and perhaps take the “Quick Tour”. The
onscreen help is very comprehensive, and its index is always a good first place to look
when you are trying to find out something about Netica.

Another good introduction is to open each of the nets in the folder “Examples \ Tutorial
- View these first”, and in the description of each one will appear a section labeled
“Tutorial” that describes what you can do with that net.

NEW FEATURES

When you first start Netica after installing it, a screen will appear listing the new
features of Netica. You can follow the link of each new feature to find out more
information about it. It is well worthwhile to check out the list while you are using
Netica to familiarize yourself with all the new things Netica can do.
FUTURE VERSIONS

If you have purchased Netica, then your purchase price includes at least a year of
upgrades of Netica Application, so your license password will work on all of them.
You can obtain them from the Norsys website.

The onscreen help and tutorial features effectively guide new users by offering comprehensive instructions and a Quick Tour upon starting Netica. These resources, combined with example nets that provide practical scenarios and instructions, are designed to assist users in becoming proficient in Netica's functionalities, making them a valuable tool for efficient onboarding .

Registering Netica by running it with administrator rights ensures that the software is fully integrated into the system. This step is critical if the location of the Netica folder changes or when setting a specific version as the default. It ensures that the necessary system permissions and settings are correctly configured, allowing Netica to function optimally .

Managing multiple versions of Netica involves understanding which version is set as the 'default.' The default version is the one that activates when a Netica document is double-clicked. Users can change the default by manually running the desired version once with administrative rights. This management is important because users may need access to different features or interfaces unique to each version without disrupting current system settings .

Users can make Netica accessible on the Windows Start menu by dragging the Netica.exe icon from its folder and dropping it onto the Start button. Similarly, a desktop shortcut can be created by dragging the icon to the desktop. These steps facilitate quick access to the software, enhancing user convenience and efficiency .

The 64-bit version of Netica requires any version of Microsoft Windows from Windows 7 onward, including Windows 10 and 8.1. On the other hand, the 32-bit version of Netica can run on older versions of Windows, starting from Windows XP, which includes Vista and newer versions like 7, 8.1, and 10. This makes the 32-bit version more versatile in terms of compatibility with older Windows operating systems .

To integrate Netica with Microsoft Excel, users must ensure both applications are either 64-bit or 32-bit compatible. Specifically, the 64-bit version of Netica requires the 64-bit version of Excel along with a 64-bit ODBC driver. If users operate on the 32-bit version of Excel, they must use the 32-bit version of Netica (Netica32.exe).

Users can stay informed about new features by checking the list that appears when Netica starts after installation, as well as through links provided for more information. Continuous updates and the discovery of new features are essential to fully utilize the software's evolving capabilities, improving problem-solving efficiency and ensuring they are using the most optimized tools available .

Netica requires a license password for full functionality, which users can enter upon first running the software. Without a license password, Netica will still operate in a fully featured manner but with limitations, such as the inability to save networks with more than 15 nodes or learn from more than 1,000 cases at a time. Users can change or remove the password via the File→Netica Password menu .

Uninstalling Netica involves running the software and using the File→Netica Password option to remove any password and Windows Registry entries. After that, users simply delete the 'Netica' folder. This uninstallation process is clean since Netica does not add files elsewhere, aside from user-created documents, which remain in their saved locations. Deletion of one version's folder does not affect other versions .

Moving the Netica folder is straightforward as users can relocate it anywhere on the hard drive. After moving, running Netica with administrator rights is needed again to update its registration with Windows regarding the new location. This ensures all system paths and references remain correct, allowing seamless continued use .
