ABSTRACT
In present age of competition and economic turbulence, all types of organizations are striving hard
to control costs, maintain high levels of productivity, meet changing expectations of the customers and
attain quality benchmarks to sustain in the market. Six Sigma is a powerful world class improvement
business strategy that enables companies to use simple but powerful statistical methods to define,
measure, analyze, improve and control (DMAIC) processes for achieving operational excellence. The
Six Sigma method is a complex and flexible system of achieving, maintaining and maximizing the
business success. Six Sigma is mainly based on understanding the customer needs and expectation,
disciplined use of facts and statistics analysis, and responsible approach to managing, improving and
establishing new business, manufacturing and service processes. Six Sigma’s role in all of this is to help
management produce the maximum value while using minimum resources. It does this by rationalizing
management.
It means that it applies scientific principles to processes and products. By using the Six Sigma
DMAIC approach processes or products are improved in the sense that they are more effective, more
efficient, or both. If no process or product exists, or if existing processes or products are deemed beyond
repair, then Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) methods are used to create effective and efficient processes or
products. Properly applied, Six Sigma minimizes the negative impact of politics on the organization. Of
course, in any undertaking involving human beings, politics can never be completely eliminated. Even
in the best of Six Sigma organizations there will still be the occasional Six Sigma project where data-
based findings are ignored because they conflict with the preconceived notions of a powerful figure in
the organization

INTRODUCTION
What is Six Sigma?
Six Sigma is a set of methodologies and tools used to improve business processes by reducing defects
and errors, minimizing variation, and increasing quality and efficiency. The goal of Six Sigma is to
achieve a level of quality that is nearly perfect, with only 3.4 defects per million opportunities. This is
achieved by using a structured approach called DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control)
to identify and eliminate causes of variation and improve processes. The term "Six Sigma" refers to a
statistical measure of how far a process deviates from perfection. It is used in industries such as
manufacturing, healthcare, finance, and service industries to improve customer satisfaction, reduce
costs, and increase profits.
The 5 Key Principles of Six Sigma
The concept of Six Sigma has a simple goal – delivering near-perfect goods and services for business
transformation for optimal customer satisfaction (CX).
Six Sigma has its foundations in five key principles:
1. Focus on the Customer
This is based on the popular belief that the "customer is the king." The primary goal is to bring
maximum benefit to the customer. For this, a business needs to understand its customers, their needs,
and what drives sales or loyalty. This requires establishing the standard of quality as defined by what the
customer or market demands.
7
2. Measure the Value Stream and Find Your Problem
Map the steps in a given process to determine areas of waste. Gather data to discover the specific
problem area that is to be addressed or transformed. Have clearly defined goals for data collection,
including defining the data to be collected, the reason for the data gathering, insights expected, ensuring
the accuracy of measurements, and establishing a standardized data collection system. Ascertain if the
data is helping to achieve the goals, whether or not the data needs to be refined, or additional
information collected. Identify the problem. Ask questions and find the root cause.
3. Get Rid of the Junk
Once the problem is identified, make changes to the process to eliminate variation, thus removing
defects. Remove the activities in the process that do not add to the customer value. If the value stream
doesn't reveal where the problem lies, tools are used to help discover the outliers and problem areas.
Streamline functions to achieve quality control and efficiency. In the end, by taking out the above-
mentioned junk, bottlenecks in the process are removed.
4. Keep the Ball Rolling
Involve all stakeholders. Adopt a structured process where your team contributes and collaborates their
varied expertise for [Link] Sigma processes can have a great impact on an organization, so
the team has to be proficient in the principles and methodologies used. Hence, specialized training and
knowledge are required to reduce the risk of project or re-design failures and ensure that the process
performs optimally.
5. Ensure a Flexible and Responsive Ecosystem
The essence of Six Sigma is business transformation and change. When a faulty or inefficient process is
removed, it calls for a change in the work practice and employee approach. A robust culture of
flexibility and responsiveness to changes in procedures can ensure streamlined project implementation.
The people and departments involved should be able to adapt to change with ease, so to facilitate this,
processes should be designed for quick and seamless adoption. Ultimately, the company that has an eye
fixed on the data examines the bottom line periodically and adjusts its processes where necessary, can
gain a competitive edge.

A micro-project proposal
1.0 Aims/Benefits of the micro project
In any mechanical industry, industrial engineering integrates men, machines, materials, methods of
production, information, and energy to make a product and hence enhance productivity by eliminating
wastefulness in production processes. Mechanical engineering technologists need to determine the
standardized process, time for its completion known as work and time study, measure the output in
terms of productivity, evaluation of jobs, workers and determine the wages and incentives,
measurement of quality of the product. Total Quality Control is an effective system of integrating
quality development, quality maintenance, and quality improvement efforts of the various groups in the
industry, to enable production and services at the most economical level which tends towards full
customer satisfaction. Understanding of fundamental principles of industrial engineering and quality
control helps technologists in maximizing efficiency within a company by finding the best use of
people, equipment, and facilities.

Wipro Six Sigma Implementation
Wipro is the world’s first CMMi* stage five certified software program company. Earlier it turned into
a vegetable oil company and transformed itself into an international IT offering large after
liberalization. Now as they modified its discipline of operations. They confronted a variety of
problems. Managers felt that there has been a want of aligning enterprise operations with consumer
desires and non-stop improvement. Therefore, Wipro commenced transferring toward a focal point on
Quality, thereby developing a getting to know surroundings that result in the implementation of six
sigma.
BENEFITS TO WIPRO DUE TO SIX SIGMA IMPLEMENTATION :
The largest projects had been completed
The environment of low upkeep charges turned into created.
It enhances overall performance via specific quantitative expertise of the costumer’s necessities
thereby bringing in costumer focus.
There turned into waste removal and improved productiveness by up to 35%.
Installation screw-ups down from 4.5% to 1% in the hardware business.
Wipro commenced educating its personnel for diverse levels of six sigma. An enterprise will by no
means ever educate its personnel for no reason. If an enterprise is doing it. In a way, they may be going
to obtain the blessings of Six Sigma.
14
Challenges that they faced :
Discovering the proper type of people and teaching them turned into a tough job. This
prompted Wipro to begin their very own consultancy to teach people.
It turned into tough to discover assets that have been required for a quick period and long time
basis.
Experts have been appointed to look at the timelines, discover the gap, vulnerable regions, and
test the final results as in line with the plan.
15
CONCLUSION
Six Sigma improves productivity and overall quality of company products and services so it is
important for every company to implement six sigma in their [Link] utilizing Six Sigma, the
project management organization uses a disciplined, data-driven approach to minimize or eliminate
defects in any process. This process can be used inmanufacturing, engineering, leadership, and any role
where there is a specific process. DMAICis the specific methodology of Six Sigma that walks project
managers through a set step-by-stepsystem to systematically identify defects, measure, analyze,
improve, and control the [Link] organizations live and breathe by the methodologies of Six
Sigma. These organizationshave reported higher income, faster processes, and increased employee
morale (Yahia, 2011).
